It’s official: Actress Kim Soo-hyun cast in Avengers 2

After weeks of speculation, The Walt Disney Company (Korea) has finally confirmed the casting of actress Kim Soo-hyun in Marvel Studios’ superhero blockbuster, Avengers: Age of Ultron. The actress will play a villainess in a supporting role, and will be billed as Claudia Kim in the movie’s credits – a wise decision, as the collective searches for her and our beloved alien boy’s shared name may break the Internet! (In some cases it seems she has even dropped the surname to go just as Soo-hyun, probably to differentiate herself.)

Kim Soo-hyun’s experience with action scenes (as Mi-rae in Level 7 Civil Servant) and her English-language skills (on display as Kai’s secretary, Sophie, in Runaway: Plan B) evidently gave her the edge needed to win the coveted role. Her villainess will appear in the scenes shot in Korea, which will begin filming in April.

For her first official Marvel Studios appearance, Kim Soo-hyun will walk the red carpet at the March 13th world premiere of Captain America: Winter Soldier in Los Angeles.

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, the actress will join Hollywood heavyweights Robert Downey Jr. (as Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow). The latter’s pregnancy and August due date is said to be causing the studio to bump up her scenes — so it’s possible Marvel fans in Korea might catch sight of Johansson on set as soon as next month.

The movie will again be helmed by Joss Whedon and will be released in April 2015.

I kind of feel for her because ever since Soo Hyun the Alien/King/Country Bumpkin/Thief/North Korean Spy got all this fame, she's been cast to the side.

Hopefully she won't be another Fan Bingbing.

And awcoconuts, could you add your sources please?

Hello filo,

What happened with Fan Bingbing or to Fan Bingbing? I am just curious... I have heard of her, and I remember reading an article about her in a fashion magazine that a friend of mine buys. That article was more about her fashion, however. I hope that you will see my question, and that I will read from you. Thank you!

Fan Bingbing was casted in Iron Man 3 and only appeared in the Chinese version of the movie. So hopefully Kim Soo-hyun doesn't only appear in the Korean version..

Regardless, I would bet she'll just end up in a stereotypical role with just a few lines.

I wish Asian actors would stop trying to chase Hollywood.

Jun Ji-hyun was lucky that she was able to come back to Korea and do a few good movies and now a hit series. But there are a lot of actors and actresses that spend too long in Hollywood just to fail and never get a chance to come back since fans have moved on.

It's where the $$'s at.

Why do you think there are so many Brits and Aussies in Hollywood?

but jun jihyun didn't totally ditch the korean audience. she was always in cfs in korea so she still maintained her visibility back home. it's a smart business move, and besides, cfs usually rake in a lot more money for less effort than dramas.

I was trying to place her in L7CS the movie, when I realized it was L7CS, the drama that shall not be remembered.

I actually remember her as Kai's secretary, and her collected English, so that says something. I thought she seemed intriguing, and a little underutilized, so I'm looking forward to at least seeing more of her!

Even if the predictability of Asian women as martial arts villainesses is getting me down...

If the predictability of Asian women as martial arts villainesses gets you down, what about the predictability of Asian men as martial arts villains?

At least Asian women have the possibility of being a love interest.

Yeah, that was not meant as an exclusive statement, but given that women of color are even more invisible in Hollywood than men, one half of the coin is just *more* depressing.

For example, Lee Byung-Hun's role in RED 2 was pretty awesome, he got to be a bit ambiguous, and the fact that he was Asian wasn't a constant factor. The Green Hornet had Jay Chou in a side-kick role, but he was still a main character.

Pacific Rim was an exception, though a great one, with having an Asian female in a role with any prominence.

but it's not better that Asian woman have the possibility of being a love interest. Just as Asian men are emasculated, Asian women are hyper-sexualized and just as objectified? So how is that "better"?

Yeah, I don't think we have to worry too much, because Joss Whedon does badass women characters really well (read: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Firefly/Serenity). I have faith in him!

It's good they choose unknown but qualified actress from Korea. But still found it strange, Hollywood always goes to very famous name if they want other Asian actresses especially from China.

I read that one of the main reason they picked her is because she can speak English well. Makes sense and I hope that she will get as much screen time as the Black Widow. Scarlett Johansson is pregnant so they might reduce her role.

I can see Kim Soo-hyun playing Ultron's bride, Jocasta. That would be much better than a random character created by Joss Whedon.

The first Avenger movie was a huge hit, beats every super hero movie ever made as far total world wide gross. It made over 1.5 billion.

I think being part of this movie will be good for her whether the role will be significant or not. She is suppose to play a villainess role so I'm hoping she would play Jocasta. She was created by the main villain Ultron but she later helped the good guys destroy him and she became an honorary member of the Avengers.
I like the story behind this character and the possibility that Kim could come back and play the same role in another Avenger movie so here is hoping.

She was OK in the 7th Grader drama, I kindda like her there more than Choi Kang Hee and Kim Min Seo. I also likes her appearance in Brain.

I hope she will have better offer next time in Kdrama. Good luck girl.

Unfortunately, when it comes to portrayal of Asians, JW isn't that diff. from the rest of Hollywood.

In an ep of "Angel" there was a total stereotypical AF character played by you know who.

I really only remember her from Brain (though I did see L7CS...), and the thing that made me remember her by name was one scene she did speaking English on the phone. Honestly, her English was better than mine, and I don't speak any other languages.

Congratulations to her for getting the role...though I'm still not liking that Asian/Korean actresses get typecasted into the usual roles.

I've only seen her in Standby and L7CS...so can't say much on her acting (especially since I got frustrated with the latter and refused to finish). Good luck to her in Hollywood and hope she does well!

An Asian being cast in a Hollywood film?

Must be (1) a foreigner, (2) female and (3) play a stereotypical role.

western media has yet to be more accepting of asian cultures i think.

It is, however, accepting of Asian cultural stereotypes.

Hence, kung fu, samarai, geisha and Asian gangster films.

It's pretty sad when Asian-American/Canadian actors have to go to Asia for work and if they do get work here, it's stereotypical roles, often playing foreigners.

I'm really looking forward to this movie just because it's the Avengers and because of Joss Whedon. I'm not too familiar with this actress, so I may have to watch Runaway Plan: B to get familiar with her. I hope she isn't the stereotypical Asian female that we all expect. She could be a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent for all we know. I'm expecting great things for her since this will be a Joss Whedon film, and he always writes badass female characters. :)

Actually it's probably not.

It seems like most Asian actors that try to make it in Hollywood never do. And all the time they spend there actually hurts their chances back home where they could really make a following.

There is always the practical problem of Hollywood production times being so long. If you get involved in a Hollywood film, you tend to disappear for a year or so. Meanwhile, your competition back home has made a melodrama, a movie, a dozen CFs, a saguek, a Chinese movie, and a guest shot on Running Man.

Lee Byung-hun is doing both. After filming G.I Joe he came back to film The Influence, Iris-movie and I Saw the Devil which was a big hit in Korea. He went back to the US to film the 2nd G.I Joe movie, then came back home to film The Masquerade which was another big hit. He went back US to film Red 2 and then came back to do Memories of the Sword, probably another big hit.

I think he's pretty smart and his English has improved a lot. Hopefully he will get better roles in Hollywood like he does in Korea.

Required fields are marked *

LOL.

Yeah, I hope he gets better roles, too.

Not likely to happen any time soon, though.

It's much more likely that the actress Kim Soo-Hyun will get better roles than he will.

Heck, Jang Dong-gun, Korean's biggest star, couldn't even get beyond the martial art stereotype as a lead in a movie and it was a B-movie. Ditto, Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat, Jet Li, etc., etc.

Unfortunately, that's just the way that Hollywood works.

I bet her character will be Sersi.

I'll admit her English is perfect and she is very pretty, but I've seen both Runaway Plan B and the god-awful Level 7 and that girl can't act her way out of a paper bag. It's really unfortunate that there wasn't a better actress - which is most of the actresses in S. Korea - that spoke good enough English for this role.

Thumbs up on casting a female asian. Thumbs down on turning down Asian female actors native to the US, since the misconception is the only way to get Asians is to go to Asia in Hollywood and they perpetuate the stereotype.

Thumbs up for it being Joss Whedon because he's excellent on female characters. (Though I don't think you need a kick-ass female character in order for them to be strong.)

Thumbs down because it's Joss Whedon (who tends to not understand race relations that well--he was called out for it at a con for the movie Serenity and he doubled down rather than, "I understand your concerns and I'll try to do better next time.")

As written it's white characters against a person of color... though I'm aware that the head of the SHIELD agency is cast black... the main team is not... and given other upsets of late (in the industry), it kinda bugs me.

All you need is kill was originally Japanese with a Japanese set of characters--cast as 100% white.

Khan--a truly good villain to have was changed to Ben Kingsley.

And STILL Akira, they are *still* talking about making the movie all white.

So I hope they do this well and don't sideline her into a part that's racist... 'cause foreign actors usually don't know until later on... (which is maybe why they keep doing the pulling from other countries) and I do have to say there are female Asians that live in the US that can play such roles. Couldn't they give some domestic love? (Which is no hate on her, but directed at the industry as a whole.)
