Lee Ki-woo becomes Miss Korea’s resident bad guy
by javabeans
Here’s another reason to tune in to MBC’s upcoming drama Miss Korea (perhaps): The drama has just added Lee Ki-woo to the mix. Depending on which of his dramas you’ve watched, this may be either good OR bad news. (I’m pleased, given how much I loved him as the lazy panda Pillar in Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, which was the first time I’ve seen him show much personality in a role… but then again, it’s also the only time he’s shown much personality in a role—I’ve seen him in a bunch of other stuff and there’s a decided blank canvas feel with him when he’s not on.)
Lee Ki-woo’s character would be a bad guy and lady-killer, so perchance the pendulum will swing in favor of personality this time ’round. He plays a “hunter” type—he’s a shark with corporate takeovers, and also a hunter of ladies’ hearts. He’ll present himself as an antagonist to drama hero Lee Seon-kyun… and while I don’t think he has the intensity to go toe-to-toe with Mr. Voice, I do think it’ll be nice to see Lee Ki-woo playing against type for once. (He’s played a bunch of bland nice guys, perhaps because he’s got that baby face steering him toward that type.)
Miss Korea is the drama about a group of friends who band together to turn a local girl (Lee Yeon-hee) into Miss Korea to save a crumbling cosmetics company, set right before the 1997 IMF financial crisis hit South Korea with such force. The group is made up of old high school classmates, and their Miss Korea hopeful was once a legendary queen bee. Oh man, hinging your entire hopes on reviving old glory days? That is a harrowing prospect.
The drama, which comes from the Pasta and Golden Time producing team, will air on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in December.

I'm honestly so excited for this drama. It seems like it could be really really funny and potentially heartwarming. I also just watched FBRS and am so excited to see Ki-Woo in such a different role. I'm not sure about the lead actress. I thought she was great in Gu Family Book, but I'm not sure about her comedic acting.

Cruelty oh cruelty! Make an absurd plot, cast some actors for whom I don't really care and then add Lee Ki Woo. I would love to watch him in a prominent role but in that drama? I can't see myself trying that. Not yet a martyr enough ;)

Truuuuth. I'm not quite sure I'm enough of a masochist to put myself through another Lee Yeon Hee drama, even to see how he does.
And if he doesn't pull through with the personality this time... that's going to be the blandest of bland dramas. :(

The "absurd plot" part is what bothers me. I am afraid that this will end up full of bad slapstick "comedy" and a bunch of really stupid people doing really stupid things for really stupid reasons. Wait... Did I just describe Heirs? :D

He's cute but, like you said, he's hit or miss. Guess we'll see!
"The drama, which comes from the Pasta and Golden Time producing team" I guess that explains why Lee Seok-hyun is the lead. And that might also mean we'll have some Every Single Day for the OST ^^
Here's to hoping Lee Yeon-hee doesn't suck all the energy out of this drama

Pasta was OK, Golden Time not so much. But been a while so don't recall if it was the acting, writing, or directing that influenced my opinions.

Oh yay! Now I am bound to be conflicted between both guys, lol. Good for my eyes (and ears in terms of the Voice) but bad for my heart! D':

I like the plot...so far. I like the actors, but I can't get around Lee Yeon Hee. She is just not talented enough in my eyes. She's so blah..and I've seen her in other dramas and movies/s. She doesn't go anywhere...she leaves me hanging out to dry all the time. Though I do find her good in MVs...if that says anything about her at all...lol

Same here. I can't see any emotion in her acting. I wish they could have cast another actress instead.

Lee Ki-woo was wonderful in "The Classic", but loved him best as "the lazy panda Pillar". ^^

Pillar, how I love thee! That was the only thing I ever saw you in, and judging by everyone else's experience, the only thing I might ever see you in. If he is playing a baddie, then I think he might be able to emote some smouldering in there. Here's hope this is good, because I will do anything for the Voice~!

Loved him in outrageous women (he is forever called Rookie in my mind ahahah. But then again he was getting energy from bouncing off the crazy heroine I guess), and I loved the panda pillar take.. but otherwise his other roles were meh. But so tall and pretty....~~~
