Gold Rainbow lines up a who’s who of dramaland’s child actors
by javabeans
UEE is only 25 years old, but she’s getting not one child actor playing her younger self for upcoming drama Gold Rainbow, but TWO. Okay, who feels old now?
It was announced early on that the weekend drama about a family of orphan siblings would star UEE as the eldest sister, and that rising teenage actress Kim Yoo-jung would play her younger self in the drama’s sizable childhood portion. (Like the producers’ previous series, May Queen, the childhood portion in Gold Rainbow will span about ten episodes.) Now the drama has added an even younger counterpart, the pint-sized Lee Chae-mi, who was recently in action-thriller drama Two Weeks.
There she was Lee Jun-ki’s sick daughter and his whole raison d’etre, winning hearts with her adorable and precocious personality. So I expect that the heroine of Gold Rainbow (named Baek Won, groan, which means hundred won and is the equivalent of a dime) will be building up tons of viewer goodwill even before the main actress hits the screen, which certainly can’t hurt.
A few more details about the plot, which centers around a heroine who grows up a poor orphan and bands together tightly with her adoptive siblings. It’ll follow her as she works her way up toward success, all without knowing that her mother is Do Ji-won or that her grandmother (Park Won-sook) is a (presumably successful) businesswoman. I’m guessing those characters will pop up later to stir things up, but the logline for the show emphasizes that this is a family “bound together by a love that’s stronger than blood,” which is a theme I can really get behind. There’s so much in dramaland (and Korean society, really) about the importance of bloodline purity and piety, and while family honor is nothing to sniff at, I think there’s room to explore positive stories about other types of families as well. Funny enough, one of my favorite examples of Nurture proving stronger than Nature was in City Hunter with Kim Sang-joong’s character, and he’ll be playing the adoptive father to the bunch in this drama. Hopefully a much less scary father this time around.
There are seven siblings in all, who’ll be played by some familiar cute tykes of dramaland, including Oh Jae-mu (who played the younger heroes of Baker King Kim Tak-gu and Bachelor’s Vegetable Store), sassy Ahn Seo-hyun (Shark, Baby-Faced Beauty), and Choi Ro-un (who was young Joo-won in Good Doctor). And while the production curiously hasn’t been putting out recent press releases, it appears that Jung Il-woo will be joining the cast as the hero; he’s on the main cast list, at least. Here’s to hoping we get an official confirmation on that soon.
Gold Rainbow will air on weekends on MBC, and follows Scandal. It’ll premiere in November.

I agree – hoping for some real adoptive family stuff here, because blood isn't everything and sometimes the family you choose ends up being more important than the one you share genes with. and those girls! so cute. if Jung Il-woo is in this, I'll be completely sold.

Korea's young actors are so talented that they usually steal the show from their adult counterparts. Cant wait for Kim Yoo-jung to grow up and play a more mature role or headline a drama. Hopefully she wont disappear from dramaland and do only films like most of Korea's talented actors.

The young lead female character is in good hands with Lee Chae Mi and especially Korea's child/teen wunderkind, Kim Yoo Jung.
I guess it's gonna be a a bit of burden starring after KYJ, but at the same time there is also the level of comfort that the starting episodes would be in good hands. And I've seen Uee on Ojakkyo and I think she did good there, hence no worries transitioning with the adults. Here's hoping for a wonderful chemistry with Jung Il Woo.

I've always wondered if the kiddos' scripts are more child-friendly - bigger fonts, wider spacing. Also, what do they do at the script reading if they can't read? Oh, cuteness! :D

Well, I was referring to child actors in general and not Lee Chae Mi specifically. But as Elina has shared below, Korean children learn how to read and write at a very young age, so I guess the child actors are able to manage reading their lines.

Yoo Jung and IU look so different though. And i know that doesn't really matter, it happens in other shows, but why not cast someone who actually looks like the older version? That would make more sense to me.

IU? or UEE?
Yeah They don't look similar but I think YooJung with her long list of credentials can handle this just fine. She actually has been cast as young counterparts of actors she doesn't look like but it came out fine.
I think the pdouction is going for the narrative.
Chae-mi actually s the most not similar looking among the 3. But I think its well casted, talent wise

"There’s so much in dramaland (and Korean society, really) about the importance of bloodline purity and piety, and while family honor is nothing to sniff at, I think there’s room to explore positive stories about other types of families as well."
WORD. This premise is sadly under-utilized in KDramas that I automatically gravitate towards these plotlines. The concept of "family being thicker than blood" was sooooo well done in the KBS daily "Cheer Up, Mr. Kim" that it was a joy to watch all 124 episodes. (Also having Kim Dong-wan starring was a total bonus. RAWR.). More Oh Jae-moo please -- what a noona killer!!! And it will be great to see Jung Il-woo back on our small screens again!
The kids these days just stun me, though -- virtually all of them can run rings around the adults with their acting prowess. Sleep be damned... I'm definitely on board with this show!

". . . And yet you still call me father" is one of my favorite lines from City Hunter. It carries implications about nature, nurture, family love and obligation, especially as delivered by Kim Sang-joong with its epic burden of reality and irony.

My first thought on seeing the pictures of the three stages of the lead character's life was, "it can't be the plastic surgery, it must be natural for her eyes to get bigger as she gets older!"

Is it November yet ?
I love all the 3 girls (especially Uee )and Kim Sang-joong is a great actor, and I am positive Jung Il-woo will be be the lead.
I remember seeing the map of the characters of the drama way back in summer , and the pics of Uee, Jing Il-woo and Kim Sang Joong were there. Back then I thought it's just a fan made thing but now I am wondering how on earth those fans knew about the cast :D

Thr producers last drama May Queen was pretty bad though. After episode 10, it just went compelty down hill & the plot just became pointless yet it got extended to 38 episodes. Lost all my faith in the producer. Sadly, I'll be skipping this drama
