Kim Nam-gil the Pirate

Why hellooooo there, Kim Nam-gil. The man suffered through some really unfortunate bowl-cut ‘dos in his recent drama Shark, so I think it’s nice of the universe to give him back his mane o’ glory (circa Bidam of his Queen Seon-deok days) for his latest project, action blockbuster movie Pirate. (Which also happens to star his Shark co-star Sohn Ye-jin, because they got a two-for-one deal? Who knows why.)
The plot of Pirate sounds a bit fantastical, though in a fun, rollicking sort of way: Somehow, Joseon’s royal seal finds itself trapped in the belly of a ghost whale (which is, I presume, also white?). The recovery of the seal would bring the finder great reward, and so our hero Kim Nam-gil steps in with his band of mountain brigands. He decides to make the leap from land to sea and turns pirate, which I really hope makes for some comedy because he’ll be playing (wait for it) a fish out of water… on water. (Sorry.) (No I’m not.)
Pirate just began filming last week, and these stills are our first look at the historical action film, which I think should be the only kind of project Kim Nam-gil does from now on. Yeah, I’m gonna be shallow like that, but how can a simple hairdo change his image so drastically? Where he’s concerned, the scruffier, the better. I mean, nobody wants to see Johnny Depp in a crew cut. Playing supporting roles, many of whom will be part of Kim’s pirate bunch, are Yoo Hae-jin, Oh Dal-soo, Ahn Nae-sang, Kim Tae-woo, and Park Chul-min, while Sohn Ye-jin takes a leading role as a pirate who accompanies the hero in his Moby Dick-ian mission.
The movie is directed by Lee Seok-hoon of Dancing Queen and The Two Faces of My Girlfriend and will release early next year.

It seems to me Kim Nam Gil looks better when he acts out his intensity, as opposed to the quiet intensityhe was supposed to portray in Shark. This first still is rawr. I must disagree on Johnny Depp though, hello have you seen Public Enemy?! The movie is nothing to write home about but clean cut Depp in 3-piece suits, yummm...

I have to say I found him unattractive in Shark. He definitely looks better this way: Gruffy, messy and wild. And yes, I hope there will be a good dose of comedy too: I'm basically waiting for a Pirates of the Caribbean kimchi sauce. I probably shoud lower my expectations to enjoy the show comfortably.

Shark gave him that shining-forehead-almost-balding-look which I hated so much and thus made me shun the show. I love his look here, as much as I love Bidam. Rawr!!!

Aaaaaaaargh! I am so shallow! I thought he was cute in Shark but dang! Apparently I'm a sucker for a guy in a mane of glory. Between the do No Min Woo wears in Blade and Petal and these flowing locks, I am in mane heaven.
I wish this series mega luck. Wondering if there'll be a lot of scenes on the waves.

yup, he always died in most his drama. in QSD, Bad Guy, and Shark, he died
so i hope in this movie he will still alive for ending or i will never watch his movie or drama again in future

My interest level in this project would be high...except that Kim Nam Gil is the lead. Not my cup of tea acting wise, or any way, and I usually do not care for the projects he chooses as a whole. I really do hope this movie is a lot of happymaking though. A good adventure romp sounds awesome.
But I am totally down for Johnny Depp with short hair. He cleans up very well.

JB why are u left the writer of the pirates?I heard Cheon Seong-Il is writer of this movie.I think that writer likes remake hollywood movie, first he remake mr & mrs smith to become my girlfriend is an agent,and this time he'll remake pirates of carribian.I hope pirates will success like my girlfriend is an agent.

I feel terrible. I read it literally as the 'royal seal' and 'ghost whale' and thought, well they sure are going with a zoological theme on this movie. Sounds fun. Are seals native to Korea...?

What can I say, I think he always looks great ..... and that acting of his .... that intensity ..... that gaze ..... that mystery ..... it's always fantastic!

- Let me guess : Kim Nam-Gil is gonna die shot on his neck.
- No, there's no gun in this one.
- Oh okay, he's gonna get stabbed then ?
- No, he's supposed to live happy with his girfriend ...
- No it can't be ! He needs to die at the end !
- Well, 99% of the script is ready and i don't see why he should die at the end. He's the hero, he saved his friend, killed the bad guy, get the girl ! Why should he die ?
- Because Kim Nam-gil always do...
- That's stupide.
- That's tradition. And make sure there is a gun somewhere, you can't mess with that...
- It didn't exist man !!
