First teaser and character posters for Empire of Gold

Ooh I like these posters. Between Empire of Gold and Sword and Flower, I’m starting to have some faith in drama poster people again. It might just be a good summer yet. Empire’s latest character posters are simple, just featuring the three leads — Go Soo, Lee Yo-won, and Sohn Hyun-joo — but the moody lighting sells it. And okay, Go Soo isn’t bad either.

The teaser isn’t really living up the epic tone I was waiting for, but it does start out with a nice voiceover from Sohn Hyun-joo: “April. It’s cruel. Spring comes. Flowers bloom. Buildings go up. When a new city gets built, the wasteland disappears.” I suppose when you put it that way, a story about real estate tycoons doesn’t sound as dry as it does on paper.

The rest of the teaser is take-it-or-leave-it boardroom hysterics, which doesn’t come across as very enticing to me. Hopefully there will be a strong setup at the outset of this story to make me care about the people. The building of modern-day Seoul is a potentially rich dramatic backdrop… as long as we actually get to leave the boardroom to see it happen.

The drama will follow Go Soo and Sohn Hyun-joo’s twenty-year war to rise to the top of a chaebol conglomerate, with Lee Yo-won caught in the middle between her love for Go Soo, the man who came from nothing but wants to tear her family down, and loyalty to oppa Sohn Hyun-joo. Sohn’s dark turn as the villain should be a performance worth watching for, and it looks like Go Soo will go toe-to-toe with him for revenge, ambition, and maybe even just plain greed. Who ever said the hero had to be a good guy?

Empire of Gold follows Jang Ok-jung and premieres July 1 on SBS.

I appreciate any reference to the opening lines of T.S. Eliot's famous poem ( http://www.bartleby.com/201/1.html ), though it's a little awkward shoehorned into a kdrama, haha.

The Waste Land

APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

Thanks for "The Wasteland" link! I haven't looked at this poem in decades but it is really wonderful and worth revisiting.

Yep, I think LYW was awesome in 49 Days. That's the first LYW drama I've watched, and IMHO she had great chemistry with the three male leads, not an easy feat to achieve.

Agree.. She did a wonderful job as a lifeless Yi-Kyung.. I even like her more than Ji-Kyung..

0

I agree.

I mean, I've only seen her in Fashion 70s, Bad Love, and a little bit in Daemang.....and she was just so boring.

I can't see any chemistry between her and Go Soo either. *Sigh.

oh I don't know if MCW would want to take it, it sounds like The Princess' Man (lover who wants to destroy your family) set in the world of Nice Guy (chaebols!).

But it wasn't offered to her however much you wanted it to and I've noticed whenever there's an article related to LYW - lo and behold the expected put downs. Broken record comes to mind. Whilst I'm not saying you are not entitled to voice your opinions, quite frankly it's getting tiresome.

......and if you have no problem with Annie voicing her opinions, why do you have to go out of your way to say that it's 'tiresome' and a 'broken record'?

(and speaking of broken records, would you still be saying that if she was voicing gushy love over Lee Yo Won in every comment? I have no problems with LYW, but sometimes people consistently hold perfectly valid opinions that you do not agree with, and trying to put them down for it isn't very mature.)

Yep, I want to like her but I've watched her in quite a few dramas and yeah she's just very boring.

I have a superficial reason for disliking her. . . I think she looks old, older than her age. So it makes me cringe whenever I see her acting with aegyo etc. I think she was okay in 49 days but ..idk. Her eye bags and :( superficial reasons....

I totally agree with you! I've been trying to place why I find her off in her roles too, and yeah, I definitely think she looks really old (especially in Bad Love after the time skip, when the production decided to tie her hair up and make her frumpy). She looked a bit better in 49 days, but it was definitely awkward to watch her with the very young Jung Il Woo.

Required fields are marked *

REALLY???? You've got to be kidding.. I think she looks 10 years younger than her actual age. That's why her 49 Days co-star Jung Il Woo said she looked like a 20 year old girl and definitely can pass as a high school student. He said that during 49 Days when Lee Yo Won wore a high school uniform for her role. He was so amazed at how she looked young, that's why he said that. And I can get behind him 100%!!! Can't believe she already have a child and a husband. I think you got the wrong impression because her roles always make her look dowdy... but a diamond will always shine LOL :)

What?? I think she looks really young for her age. Especially when she grins!
I'm actually really excited to watch this drama for her. I mean Go Soo is definitely a big plus but i've always been a fan of her dramas.

Hi, just personal note to @bebeswtz, and those who don't like LYW.
Even i'm not so LYW's fan, but i need a lot of Oxygen when reading you guys' comments. Haha, we know ur feeling when ur favourite actors are not in the place u want them to be (because SBS insisted on getting LYW), however, pls think about the feeling of LYW's fan as well as neutral fan when reading your so hurtful comments. Imagining your feeling when ur favourite actors are bashed the same way! Trust me, no one is powerful enough to be loved by all the world (even God can't, LOL).
It's not that u guys are prohibited to voice ur own thoughts, but pls be CONSIDERATE! this sense is much appreciated by many people here. In case u guys are not capable to be that considerate, haha, pls keep away from EOG, LYW, ect... u are not forced to watch it, rite? haha, i know Go-soo is the prob here! just watching him and wev you want in EOG, and skipping LYW's parts is the solution i suggest.

Sorry, not offense at all, just my thought after reading many of unfriendly comments here and there below wev related to Empire of Gold.

Thanks for that.. I am a big fan of LYW & it's sad that there are people who are uncaring or no thought for others..

I suggest the same thing.. if you don't like LYW then skip her part or don't watch the drama.. why suffer??? I do that to actors/dramas I don't like & I am more peaceful & happier..

She is an AMAZING actress! Don't know how do you see her acting but most people and even viewers agree that she is a good actress and that's why she could sustain for this long... 49 days is one of my most fav' dramas of all time and she was simply amazing in it! She played 2 roles and I could actually see her as 2 different people in the drama...

Having seen The Chaser, I have high hopes for Empire of Gold especially as it features the charming LYW, SHJ and GS. I must admit I'm not familiar with GS's work as I've only seen a couple of eps of Will it Snow for Christmas but I love LYW and SHJ is a great actor. Can't wait for 1st of July!

Btw 2nd teaser is better than the 1st.

Recently finished watching "Love 911" and let's just say it took me forever to finish it.

Totally "paint by the book" romance (could see everything coming from a mile away and aside from hitting every cliché in the book, most of it felt forced).

That being said, I thought Han Hyo-joo did a pretty decent job acting (actually better w/ the emotional scenes than w/ the other less emotional scenes; partly b/c her character didn't really ring true).

As for Go Soo - he was just adequate, but is bordering dangerous close to the "wooden" category.

"Love 911" actually had a pretty winning cast - just wish the writers did more with the supporting roles and didn't make the lead couple so paint by number.

Love 911 was so boring and dragged too much. HHJ is really trying her best to get out of her innocent image but she's not convincing me.

I think Green Rose is Go Soo's best work.

Yeah, the posters look by far more interesting than the teaser. The show even sounds boring on paper. But I'll give it a shot when it airs, because I just love Lee Yo-won. Ever since 49 Days, and before that, Great Queen Seondeok, I've been a fan. It also doesn't hurt that Go Soo is in it too.

I soooo love everything about LEE YO WON and she's the only reason why I'm into Kdrama. She's simple, quiet but still on top that's why she has a lot of bashers and that only proves that a lot of people with crab mentality wants her down. I can attest to her stellar, brilliant and dynamic performances in all her roles because I watched all her dramas and movies. Well I guess SBS is such a big and trusted company that they are very eager to hire Yo Won in this drama because they are very much confident that she always deliver a real acting with passion and that she's far more than perfect to pull off this role.

I might give this a shot for Sohn Hyun-joo. Loved him in the Chaser. I've seen a couple of Go Soo's previous work and I don't get what the hype is all about. I think he's ok. As for LYW, I think she's really sweet but her acting bores me.

I hope the story is kick ass. The team worked on the story of The Chaser superbly and the 16 episodes was worth it all. Being the story of 20 years period, I can assume there could be an extension. I fancy seeing some "walkman", adidas sneakers and pagers. totally in the 90's mode after reading this story. Son Hyun Joo ajusshi, I hope you and Ryu Seung Soo make it awesome since you both have gone to the dark side :p

and go soo is always welcome in my book - he has the most smoldering glares ever... plus he really is a good actor. hes good at acting "intense" if that even makes any sense haha... one day i hope to see him in a more light hearted drama

I have no problems with Lee Yo Won but some of her fans in here need to take a crash course in how to deal when someone is not a fan of your bias and dares to say so - you won't win her any new fans by throwing internet tantrums about how 'hurtful' it is that someone criticises her abilities, and resorting to childish putdowns and speculations about the non-fans.

Lee Yo Won is a miss or hit for me. We all have different points of view. Her roles are always melancholic, and saying she's starting to get boring doesn't mean I'm putting her down. I'd love to see her in a rom-com for a change.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think it won't happen because rom-com is her less preferred genre. She did a little bit of rom-com once & it's only a movie "Surprise Party".

Yes, we all have different point of view & for me I like Lee Yowon's way of acting. I am also not very much into rom-com so I am satisfied with the dramas/movies she chose.

Oh, what you meant by "take a crash course"? sorry, but it sounds like u wanna support a fan-war rather than calm every one down.
From what i have read here so far, LYW's fan didn't say anything bad about other actors, but just other actors' fan with their unstoppably spiteful comments added oil to the fire! Then whose fan is the most shameful here??? Don't show ur jealousness obviously like that! It doesn't benefit your idols!
Well, keep calm and supporting your favourite celebrities in the polite ways, and show your respect to other people!

Frankly Yowon is the only actress I ever care but do I have to trash any other star with no shame for the sake of my love for her? I didn’t know this thread is not welcoming her fans here. Is this exclusively for bashing only, since when?

I don't really like LYW either. Find that she looks old and I don't feel moved by her acting...

Well but I'll still watch this and give it a chance.

Anyway I think both positive and negative comments should be taken in stride here... the comments section is not exclusively for fans, and non-fans are entitled to post their opinions here as well.

I don't think any comments above qualify as "trashing"...

Sounds like you don’t really have a favorite actor in this drama, might as well skip it to put you out of sight of LYW for good and less miserable if your actor is not even one of the main cast.

The fact is that lyw always came in for a bashing on this site whenever her name is mentioned for any drama. In a previous article about this drama, her name was still dragged in for some sniping even though her participation is not the main focus. As if her involvement isthe one thing that will ruin the drama for them. Please.

I don't have any sympathy for such people. They are just setting themselves up as fair game for whatever backlash. Par for the course, as someone said earlier.
