Lee Ki-woo plays dad in movie Bean Sprout

With his drama now over (OCN’s The Virus), Lee Ki-woo is heading to the big screen for a new movie titled Bean Sprout, which is described as centering around a “warm fatherly love” story. Okay, you got me; these daddy-daughter bonding stories always tug those heartstrings just so.

In the movie, Lee Ki-woo plays a children’s book writer who loses his beloved wife and finds himself a single father to his daughter. Though he’s devastated by the loss and “feels like the world has ended,” he has to rally and find a way to survive for the sake of his little girl.

It sounds like a sweetly emotional human drama, and he’ll be making a 180 degree turn from his most recent role playing a genius scientist in The Virus. I do think Lee Ki-woo could use a push in venturing deeper into emotional roles, because it feels like he often holds back or resists stepping fully into the moment (though some of the blame rests in the projects themselves; I’ve seen him in a fair share of mediocre projects). That kind of acting is fine when he can get by on his charm (see: Flower Boy Ramyun Shop), but I’d love to see him getting more real and present as an actor. Not that charm is bad. Charm is good. Charm gave us sexy panda and sturdy Pillar. Just, you know, growth is good.

Bean Sprout will begin filming in June.

Hi, interesting comment! I can only think of daddyho in GFB and of the dad in Mandate of Heaven aka the Fugitive of Joseon. Does that make it a trend? Can you think of any other (hot) dads in current Kdramas?
From the threads I have read here, I don't think there are that many dads in K-movies either (only one movie comes to my mind, the one with PSH, Cell #7 or something like that).
That being said, I am all for hot dads becoming the trend in Kdramas and in K-movies :-).

Well, lemme see.. Lee Junki is supposed to play a dad as well in his new drama. Although that still doesn't make it that many, but I guess it's way more than usual :D

Oh yeah, I had forgotten about the LJK movie (which is kind of like the movie version of MoH, right? With his daughter having leukemia or something like that). Thanks for responding :-)...

Question: I know that he was a sturdy Pillar in Flower Boy Raymen Shop. In what drama (or movie) was he a sexy panda?

The drama "Panda and Hedgehog" from last summer. Do yourself a favor and either skip it, or keep a finger on the FF button on your remote.

He wasn't in that drama. That was the one playing daddy gumiho in Gu Family Book. And I doubt you got him confused with Donghae from Super Junior lol

No, he wasn't in Panda and Hedgehog. I think, "sexy panda" refers to his "Flower Boy Ramyun Shop". He was too "lazy" (like a panda) there.

Nice title. He does remind me of a bean sprout. Nice, long and tall and totally skinny/slim. Just like a bean sprout. Did they name this for him?

I wonder if Kdrama will come out with a drama focusing on just single mothers and how tough they have it in Korea's society.

Is the recent onslaught of daddy-baby dramas due to Appa Oediga?

Would you really trust a Kdrama to explore that kind of social issue? Single mom finds love in spite of society stories seem to be a dime a dozen though (and I avoid these like the plague as they're just Cinderella stories is slightly grittier packages).

Childless Good Fortune - Uhm Ji Won's storyline - is a notable exception.

I'm only going off what I've seen though. I'm always happy to be corrected :-)

No, I wouldn't actually. I just wish they made one so people can open their eyes and see why single mothers are voluntarily (usually unwilling though) giving their babies away.

I get that being a single mother in itself is already an uphill task, so DON'T MAKE IT WORSE PLEASE.

Actually there are a ton of kdramas that focus on single mothers but most of them are dailies or those weekend dramas that go for 50+ episodes.

Of course like others have mentioned, they are often Cinderella stories though :)

I couldn't have been the only one that read the title as Bean Stalk upon seeing a picture of Lee Ki Woo.

Oooowohaahhoooh...! That'd be incredibly great & I like him in that drama ''Flower Boy Ramyun Shop".....keke, it was very fun and good! I would like to see him act with adorable, young actress Kim Yoo Jung in this movie, ofc. :)
