Joo-won and Joo Sang-wook courted for new medical drama

New drama alert! KBS is lining up their next Monday-Tuesday drama to follow Shark — a medical drama called Green Scalpel — and the production is reportedly courting Joo-won (Gaksital) and Joo Sang-wook (Special Affairs Team TEN) to star. They’re both considering the roles and working on contract negotiations, so nothing’s final yet. If Joo-won signs on, he’ll star as a developmentally disabled young man who has the personality of a child, but the skills of a genius surgeon. So it’s Joo-won: Doogie Howser M.D.? Wait, you guys know who Doogie Howser is, right? Suddenly feeling very old…

The new drama comes from PD Ki Min-soo of hit family drama Ojakkyo Brothers, and writer Park Jae-bum of OCN forensic procedural God’s Quiz (he wrote all three seasons). Medical dramas aren’t really my thing, but Joo-won getting back together with Ojakkyo’s director is definitely good news, and the twist on the usual medical drama might be worth a watch.

The “human drama” is about an autistic young man with the personality of a grade-schooler (stunted developmentally at around ten years old), who becomes a pediatric surgeon. That’s even crazier than just plain child genius doctor. It sounds like the kind of role that gets actors awards, so I have a feeling it won’t be passed up so easily, even with injuries, movies, and musicals keeping him plenty busy.

Joo Sang-wook is up for the ace pediatric doctor role, so he’ll be Joo-won’s rival in the hospital. It would crack me up if Joo Sang-wook played his role straight out of White Tower or [insert serious medical drama here], and Joo-won countered the rivalry with neener-neeners and made-ya-look jokes. Considering Joo-won’s already a teenager trapped in the body of a twenty-something, how much of a stretch could it be?

Green Scalpel follows Shark, which puts its premiere in August.

Why are all those people kept on mentioning the "unmentioned Level 7". How frustrating of them. From what Joo Won said, he gain alot from this drama and expanded his acting boundary. Removing from his resume? That would be a big NO from him.

Out of all Joowon's drama Level 7 is my least favorite (yeah of course). But I don't think it's completely embarrassing because Joowon said that the reason he took the role was because he wanted to play a less serious, different role. He also wanted to play a character that's closer to his age

Even that drama sucks it still proves his acting skill cause he suited Gilro/Pilhoon's role so well.

I'd love to see Joo Won in a medical drama as well...but if this was real life, I would question why the hospital would allow him to work at all. If he is a developmentally delayed, how does he have the sensibility to make critical life choices that require a lot of maturity, thought, problem solving skills...I mean...a '"great surgeon" needs a great mature mind in addition to steady hands.
Idk how this will work...but I'm looking forward to seeing it

there are a variety of artistic people. some are normal, some are childish, some are extremely sensitive, etc. in joowon's case, he might play a genius doctor, though his mentality is that of a child. a genius is a genius, regardless of his age.

not much infor yet on how his role would be. his communication might be normal, and his brain works fine. let's see how this goes. ^^

I also wonder the same. But I doubt this will become a spastic comedy with him being childish playing with hospital knives etc.

I don't know about the scriptwriter, maybe I will check his work before commenting further but I think Joo Won can surprise us with this role under the guidance of the same PD that he works before in Ojakgyo Brothers.

Kim PD directed most of KBS dramas like Goodbye Solo and Snow Queen and That Fool with Kim Ah-joong and Hwang Jeong-min and surprise surprise... Joo Sang-wook also playing supporting role in tht drama. He mixed black comedy and story with hearts pretty well.

Knowing Joo Won style of acting, he and his male co-star will not outshine each other but will bring out the best of each other.

Lucky us fan of Joo Won and Joo Sang-wook!

Okay, please both of them confirm this ASAP.

I want this to happen. But Joowonie will be very busy with a new movie with Kim Ah Joong, his upcoming Musical and ongoing 2 days 1 night. Phew.

Missed him in drama, (will) never finish watching his Level Who? drama. Bleh. But a big fan of him since his Baker King to Ojakyo Brothers to Gaksital!!!'

If it's the writer of God's Quiz, then my expectations gonna be rising so high. (then again, God's Quiz's excellence was the marriage of so many good things - Ryu Dukhwan, the director, the writing, the plot, the side characters...)

but these are two good actors: Joo Won and JSW. also, Joo Won (if he confirms) is back to KBS. perhaps his drama ratings will be high again.

Reading the synopsis has left me not too excited. I'm betting the actual medicine in here will be minimal to make room for a lo-beu line. Blech.

Also, Joo Sang Wook is far too hot to play second lead to anyone.

Anyways:

Leading lady - pediatric psychiatrist who is a few years older (haha, I'm sure this one will have the Joo Won fans apoplectic); was involved with second lead historically.

2nd leading lady - 15 (!) year old girl.

Right?! I was like, this can't possibly be true, JSW is first lead material... then I looked at dramawiki and realized that he was basically second lead in almost every drama he's done. Sigh.

I don't even mind him doing cable or weekend dramas if he could be the bona fide male lead.

I agree that Joo Sang Wook is a great actor but this is not a downgrade. Ten is a cable drama so it has less viewers in Korea. Being second lead in one of the Big 3 is good since it'll give him more exposure.

I didn't watch TEN but his performance in Giant is stellar. I can't wait for this.

Ten is a quality drama and he was awesome in it as a lead. Now he's going to playing 2nd fiddle to Joo-won.
As far as exposure he had plenty already, he played Prince Wolya in QSD which was a national drama then he moved on to Giant which was also a national drama. This new drama is not going to be any bigger than QSD and Giant.

but you gotta consider the writer. God's Quiz dealt with so many medical concepts (rare diseases) so I'm willing to bet my monopoly bucks that the medical aspects won't be in the background. in fact, it's the romance that took a back seat - or popped up at the last minute. of course, God's Quiz on cable so that might be a factor. so it's too soon to judge, imo.

As for Joo Sang Wook, he seems the type to not care about the leading status. i think if he feels the character is strong enough, whether secondary or tertiary, he might be willing to take it. but again, that's just my take on him based on his resume.

i don't care about firs lead n second lead as long as the charracter good, they can attract my attention more than the lead, ex : Kim sung soo in many drama, joo won in baker king, Song jong ho in princess man. The most importance for me is the role they portray

I doubt there will be any romances for Joo Won's character. How is it possible if his character is supposed to be 10 years old in terms of personality and social behavior?
I also do not think Joo Sang Wook is second lead in that sense. Instead of romance, I see the drama revolving round these 2 men. I maybe wrong but if there is any romance, it's probably going to be Joo Sang Wook's. However this being kdrama, your scenario on the leading lady may come true!
I am more interested to see these 2 men together.
By the way, perhaps only people who visit DB are apoplectic with Joo Won being cast with an older actress. I am at soompi's and Chinese forums, they don't share the same sentiments. Some would rather a actress nearer his age but hardly any got that vehement when CKH was cast.

Joo Won will most likely be brutally bad at this role. He has an tendency to overact and given this role he has ample opportunity to. He will be dealing with an dual character, which in this case most likely means that he will be playing up his variety personality in one scene and give us the dilated pupils in the next.

I know he has been officially been declared that he is an great actor by this site, but seriously? And the plot already sounds stupid and unrealistic.

And the writing of God's Quiz isn't exactly stellar, look at that last season...

Yeah, Lee Min Ho is a sucky actor but I think underacting is much better suited for a melo than overacting.

Song Joong Ki would have been a good choice from an acting standpoint but I can already smell the 'fail' emanating from this drama so we should be thankful he stayed away.

0

With underacting you can at least pretend that he is doing something right, with overacting it is pretty hard to ignore that he doesn't know what he is doing.

Song Joong Ki won't get casted in any drama, since he said that he will do one or two movies and then be off to military service. Which is wise decision at this point in his career.

I won't count on Joo Won being casted, it is pretty much only press propaganda now.

0

Lee Min Ho????? -_- LOL!!!! XD, *Tries to imagine* ............... Nah, *CAN'T* I would rather sit and watch paint dry, than to watch him. After FAITH, I've decided to stay clear of him for a while. If jb and gf say something about a drama you will hear it on most blogs and comment sections. jb and gf are the most influential people and for a lot of people their word is law.

Thank You!!!, "It kills me that actresses can’t even get a break without being torn to pieces for their acting". And that's not even half of it. They get slam so badly depending on their looks and age. It grinds at my nerve, that it's FINE/OK if the male leads are older, but when it's the female lead that are older, ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE. That's why I stay away from certain websites and comments sections. It can become quite childish, if you ask me.

0

Annie, I quite agree.

0

Sorry but I can make my own judgement without having to be told what's good and what's bad... Joo Won is talented imo, I've been impressed by his portrayal of Kang To in Gaksital...and I'm hard to please. He's not perfect but there's room to improvement imo.

@LM : I'm curious, may I know which actor you find good?

That is your opinion and that is totally fine, but in my own opinion he isn't an good actor and not that talented. I didn't say that EVERYONE is a sheep, so consider yourself not included if that makes you feel better.

I would like to stay on topic, so I won't list actors that I think are good. It's not that I think that no one is good enough, but it's silly to make an list to show you that.

0

Yeah. Agree with you. I myself find JW talented. He makes me in love with K-drama again. Let's enjoy his acting.

0

I'm not asking you to make a list, naming one would have been enough...Afraid much? The thing I hate the most on DB (or even other sites) is the stuck-up who think their tastes are superior to others, there's nothing more annoying than that. Oh well...

0

@lili

What would one name give you? Would it make you feel better if you can say that the actor is crap? Stay on topic and defend your beloved Joo Won without having to get personal and involving other actors.

It's freaking silly this is why I won't say.

0

I'm not that petty...I may even like/appreciate him for all you know. You know, I'm not that exclusive, I like other actors beside Joo Won. But it's your choice, I won't force you...no harsh feelings!

0

Is there a need to attack -for lack of better word- the majority of commenters for their supposed sheep mentality, just so you can show you don't agree? Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, but it's the condenscending tone of your statement that's rubbing me the wrong way. So far I haven't seen the owners of the blog shut down anyone for having a different opinion. I don't know... I think you could've easily shared your dislike for the actor without having to put down others' preferences.

He over acted like crazy in L7CS, I really couldn't believe my eyes. I had to wonder if his lead lady's propensity for exaggerated acting rubbed on him, or it was only the poorly written role/drama and the bad directing that spoiled him, because he was quite unwatchable in that drama. ughhh And I'm a fan. I dropped it after 4 episodes...I'm tired of him being cast as a cop/detective. Try something else already!!

0

He is after all still a rookie actor. Your last statement is quite accurate. A good director and writer are needed to hone his skills more. Perhaps joo won thought he needed to overcompensate when it came to RomCom since he's played serious roles so far. It also didn't help that CKH didn't develop a magnetic chemistry with him.

Jung Ki only overact in emotional scene as far as I'm concern... and even then he still alluring and still in character and knows his character ... (if that makes senses) And now.... he still has tendencies to overact (based on ARANg for sure) but he has restrained it alot... I love it..

But with joo woon, I don't know... in gaksital, he was OTT to the max... He potrayed KT with simplistic and no depth ... the transformation feels rush (then again, it went to the writing too.)
and I just wanna say I can't connect to his potrayal as kang to at all.
He has his moment... but it's very few....

Totally.

If this is confirmed, well, I'll be expecting an hilarious trainwreck. Joo Won seems to be a good guy, but he needs to work on his craft if he's going to play anything that needs nuance or some sort of realistic emotions (and characters with mental health problems require talent if you don't want to end up being a clown).

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I've only watched him in "Gasital" where I thought he did a good job, and I didn't find him overacting (or at least not enough for me to loose focus). Though I cannot say anything about him in his other dramas.

My thought, though, is that some of his overacting/way of portrayal can originate in the fact that he started off as a musical actor. Acting on stage and acting in a drama requires two different levels of acting; facial expressions and gestures being generally "overacted" on the stage to make them stand out and come across (also the reason for excessive make-up). Whereas obviously subtlety will not be lost on film.

However I do agree with you that dealing with a dual character might be out of his experience level. It is a tricky role that needs to be played just right, with not much leeway in either direction. Autism in general being a very hard thing to portray unless you have some form of experience with it.

Then again, who knows. The drama, and Joo Woon, could surprise you, or it could fail. Unfortunately we won't know until the drama airs (and the final confirmation that he is taking the role) :)

Required fields are marked *

I agree with you on the bit regarding his musical background and the tendency for big expressions and big movements and thay is why some people feel as if he's overacting. But, i don't feel that he overacts all or most of the time or throughout the drama/movie that he is in. He's cable of subdued acting but nevertheless gets the needed emotion or able to convey the needed emotion to the viewers. It depends on the character, on the situation and the directing. I don't know if everyone who has commented has seen all of his dramas for them to say so and with full conviction that he overacts. But if so, it's funny to think that such persons who think badly of his performance were able to watch all of his dramas! :p

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, as I said I've only seen him in Gaksital and I though he did a good job with Kang To and in making you feel (and see) what the character is going through. And while I didn't find him to be overacting, I can see how it can come across as overacting.

But again, not having seen his other dramas makes me unable to judge on a more general basis. However, I do think that playing autistic might provide him with a challenge. I know of young actors that have done it brilliantly, but it is a lot of work to portray any type of disability. And an actor should always try to develop themselves in the art; starting point being good or bad the same.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Disagree. Don't think he overacts. If he did, it was only in his 1st drama, Baker King. He came straight from a musical background where you have to exaggerate your acting on stage. But he's improved so much since then.

Someone said he overacted in "Civil Servant". Umm... excuse me? Did we see the same show? Do you know the romantic comedy genre?

Joo Won is known in the acting circle as being astonishingly different in real life from the characters he's portrayed. It is almost uncanny. And that is a mark of a great actor.

"he’ll star as a developmentally disabled young man who has the personality of a child, but the skills of a genius surgeon."

hahahaha. Only in the world of kdramas would this ever be possible. It's fun to think about, but in the states at least, there's an age limit to how young you can be before you enter med school. I'm pretty sure it's age 20. That and the interview process here is so insistent on applicants having developmental maturity that it's believable that a doctor could have a personality of a child, but certainly not the developmental capacity of one. If any admissions saw a hint of developmental stuntedness, it's out you go.

I mean, there's a reason the average age of medical students in their first yr of med school keeps on going up; it's age 25 now. Med schools pick older applicants with work experience, but also life experience. The assumption being that they're more developmentally mature and able to handle what they encounter in med school. (not sure how that always works out though)

Korea takes med students after national service.

My country has undergraduate and graduate entry medical programmes as well.

It's not 25 years old. However yes, the interview plays an important role besides grades.

However, I will say though there are plenty of socially challenged medical personnel with degrees without autism.

And also FYI one of the the applicants for regional medical head in my city has Aspergers syndrome. Which is is part of autism.

Autism is a disease with a wide spectrum though. If he's mildly developmentally challenged, then fine, he can be a high functioning individual in society. There are plenty of socially awkward people in the world who still do fine. But if he's so developmentally challenged as to have the psyche of a 10 yr old child, I don't know how believable he'll be as a doctor. The character, I mean.

Please refrain from calling autism a "disease". It's autism spectrum disorders and not diseases.

In fact I, as person diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, find it highly insulting to be called diseased. The term (developmental) disorder is value-neutral and preferred in this case.

"However, I will say though there are plenty of socially challenged medical personnel degrees without autism" hahaha indeed!

I say this with love, because I'm getting my Master's in microbiology studying novel antibiotics and am currently applying for med school myself, but my experience with surgeons especially has shown me that tact and social awareness DO NOT necessarily go hand in hand with medical expertise. If Joo Won was playing a bedside doctor I would be surprised he got through the screening, but since he's a surgeon especially it makes it all a little more believable.

I started my housemenship by the age of 25 after 5 years in medical school, so I am probably lucky.

The plot seems to be too unrealistic but this is kdramaland we are talking about. I have seen a drama with crazier plot. So no big deal.

I am quite surprised with the comments about him overacting.
I thought his actings were flawless in Bridal mask and OB.
The fact that most of his drama characters were quite opposite to his real life character make him even more amazing. He seems to be naturally talented.

This drama will put him in a different league from the rest of other actors of his generation.

will this be a comedy? there are different kind autism manifestations, i hope it's not the one where he needs to stare in space. But i like the idea of the neener-neener kind of autism you mentioned =). or Can't he just be an ADHD?

I don't know if any of you have ever spent time with an autistic person before. They can be extremely intelligent. I have a cousin who is considered autistic (social ability of a 5th grader) but is working on a Master’s Degree. I also have a cousin who is unable to care for himself and never will. There are many different levels of autism. Some people are very high functioning (to the point where you would just think they have an odd personality) to being very low functioning (unable to care for themselves). Einstein is believed to have been autistic. To me it isn’t too far-fetched for there to be a pediatric surgeon who was a high functioning autistic. There could be one right now, with their co-workers thinking that they just have wonderful bedside manner with children. I just wanted to share the knowledge with everyone that being autistic doesn’t automatically make you stupid.

That assumption is also untrue, as people who have autism have personalities as diverse as people without.

I don't think the assumption here was that people with autism are "stupid." No one is saying that. No one is saying that people with autism don't have diverse personalities. I think we're all adults here. What I am trying to say is that people with autism do tend to have social problems that make it difficult to work in a field where you need to deal with people and children every day. I agree with KDR on this one. Healthy children can be a lot to handle, much less sick children.

And a doctor will need to talk to complete strangers often. And it's on the doctor to make their patients feel more comfortable by striving to connect with them. How many developmentally challenged people do you think will be able to empathize with patients? Empathize on an intellectual, emotional, psychological level on issues that they've never personally had to encounter before? This is hard to do even if one is developmentally normal!

GPs yes, but surgeons not so much. Often they're more technicians than anything else.

Neurosurgeons in particular are notorious (within the medical community) for having poor to non existant people-skills. The associated neurologist and neuropsychologist make up for this deficiency by taking on the hand holding roles.

Come to think of it, there could be comedy in this drama if the leads are a savant neurosurgeon and a neuropsychologist who has to mop up the emotional aftermath of his encounters with both patients and staff.

0

Huh? Who said anything about stupidity? I just said it is an incorrect assumption to say a person with autism automatically can't relate with other people or cannot work well with children. I'm not going into detail about my personal life on the internet, but I know this from my college degree and work experiences. It is unfair and potentially insulting to people who are autistic to assume what they are and are not capable of doing and achieving. I guarantee that there are doctors who are making a perfectly good living that just so happen to be autistic. Autism isn't necessarily debilitating.

Besides, we don't really know what direction this character will take since it hasn't even aired. So why don't we wait until then for judgement, hm?

*steps off soapbox and refuses to get back on it regardless of any response*

0

Hey @gidget... dont judge surgeons that way, we do communicate and have excellent social skills.

more technicians than anything else?? you must be out of your minds. We save lives!

0

"Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior." - Wikipedia

If the people you know that have "autism" have completely normal social skills then they were most likely misdiagnosed.

The emotional aspect of being a doctor (even surgeon) is hard for any person even without mental disabilities. People that have autism just aren't well suited for that kind of work.

I disagree.
My friend has a mild form of autism and lacks social skill but she has a natural ability around children and are great with them. Even very sociable people may not form a connection with kids the way she does.
It might also have to do with the fact that little kids don't judge you right off the bat because you may have autism or seem odd. So she feels alot more at ease.
You'd be amazed at how much an autistic person can surprise you, and i'm still in the process of learning about her every day. She's a unique one that gal.

I think that Joowon is a good actor. Great? Maybe not yet, but I believe that he can improve with time. I definitely think that he has talent and wouldn't place him in the same category as Lee Minho (the latter may be sweet in real life, who knows, but I do not believe that he is a good actor at all). Luckily, I am not one of those fans whose actor can do no wrong.

As an aside, does anyone else know that Park Kiwoong also played a character with autism in The Slingshot? If not then I would recommend checking out his performance.
Here are two videos with cuts from the drama. You can get some idea of how he interpreted the character (even without Eng. subs):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av4QPEF3eoM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qe6uc4rRw_Y

Taking on this role for Green Scalpel would require a lot of preparation. I hope that Joowon can really get into character, but will that be possible with everything else he is doing?

Since PKW is a good actor who already has experience playing an autistic character, perhaps the production team should consider casting him, not Joo-won.

I think it's a really challenging role and I agree with you and hope he will have time to prepare adequately if he takes up this role.

if he's thinking of popularity, he wont be doing a musical anymore. he really has passion in acting, and wants to try different genres. i think this chance to potray a medical doctor wouldnt be passed up so easily, to quote JB/GF.

people improve with time. no one is excellent in their role the first time they try it. joowon tried several similar albeit slightly different roles before. this is a major acting gig for him if he accepts it.

u would know what he's doing since his news is posted up. not everyone knows what he's doing, with the musical, and his upcoming movie. not many international fans also watch 1N2D. it's a great way for him to challenge his acting, and to gain new fans.

To improve their acting, maybe but not to boost popularity I guess. Besides, Joo Won didnt just join the musical. He was a musical actor to begin with. He is just going back to his first love.

Anyway, this thing about being overexposed as commented by geri. If you are not his fan, why would you bother if he suffers due to overexposure unless you think he is doing it at the expense of your favorite actor? I don't disagree that there are a few talented actors out there who never got the recognition they deserve but this is a free market. There is no such thing as giving up a choice role so that some one else can have it. Nothing in Real Life happens this way, does it? Competition is stiff and isn't always fair. Luck can only help to a certain extent but only time will tell who is just a one-hit wonder or pretty faced boy and who has the talent and determination to shine.

0

I like the whole autism part because I think it's always good to shine a light on any disorder just to get people aware, interested and more accepting. Especially since doctors tend to misdiagnose to spare the mother blame. If they do this right it could end up doing a lot of good.

Lee Min Ho >>>>> Joo Won. Why? Because you don't get that LMH is trying to act with his roles. You feel like he is the characters that you are watching. I don't want to watch try to be a secret service agent. I don't want to see any actor try to be their characters. I want to feel like I am watching Jack Dawson not Leonardo Dicaprio. I absolutely loved Gu Jun-Pyo, I loved Jeon Jin Ho, I was enamored with Lee Yoon Sung, he was ok as Choi Young (there were plenty of production issue with that show so I am not going to hold him completely responsible for this). However I am almost always turned off by Joo Won's overacting and can't get fully engaged in any of his dramas for that reason. I can see him doing well on broadway for this reason.

They both can improve though, so I will continue to watch them in the future. But in the end subtle acting while conveying exactly what one is feeling is far superior to theatrics. That is why right now Lee Min Ho is better.

I don't like the premise for this drama. But it could possibly be one of those to surprise you. Joo won needs a break though. People have a way of getting tired of you. He will burn out the viewers if he continues like this.

LMH is a bit too bland, imo. joowon comes from theater, so he tends to over-act a bit. but overacting is better than underacting where i have no idea what emotion that person is trying to potray. it's one of the reasons i gave up Playful Kiss, coz Hyunjoong is sooooo bland.

i'm looking forward to seeing how this drama turns out. as u said, both of them could improve with time. as for 'getting tired of you' part, i disagree. joowon will have a movie released soon, of which not everyone watches. and also his musical, also which not everyone watches. so this is a good way to introduce him back to the drama-land after the L7CS flop. ^^

See, I always see LMH as himself rather than a character. He's a decent actor, but he doesn't ever become the character for me.

Joo Won has a way to go as far as being a good actor is concerned, but he seems to have a good head on his shoulders and at least picks a variety of roles and genres. He wants to challenge himself, and he will get better. LMH has stuck himself in various romantic lead roles for his career thus far, and probably will do so in the future too. He honestly needs to push himself out of his comfort zone and work with some good PD's that can bring out the best in him. That's the only way he can improve. But now he's doing Heirs, so I don't think we'll see any improvement for awhile, lol.

Why I will watch this: A medical drama with a premise which doesn't smell re-heated. Maybe it won't be completely accurate as others said (still, the writer of GQ is in the house and it's a good news) but I don't care. Korea needs to talk and learn about mental health and disabilities.
Sidenote: Is pediatric surgeon a specialty in SK? Surgeons are not separated depending on the age of their patients here... Maybe a translation glitch?

Joo Sang Wook. I will definitely watch this for him. He is so good in TEN... Playing a "cold" technician is really his thing.

Joo Won can do the best or the worst acting wise... I'm quite indifferent to him, truth to be told. I will let him for his fans. ;)

i REALLY hope he takes up this character. it seems like a very challenging role, and it’s is so different than the usual policeman role he plays. nothing against that, i LOVE watching him act as a policeman, he looks HOT in a uniform, beating up people (yes, i’m a sadistic, i know). i just want to see him play a different role for once. ^^

if he does takes this role, it’s gonna be very tough for him. idk if his movie has completed filming or in the process, and there’s the musical too, not forgetting 1N2D filming every other weekend.

and i agree with JB and GF, this role seems like an award-winning role. ^^ REALLY HOPE HE TAKES UP THIS CHARACTER....... <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

I agree this kind role is a potentially award-winning type but I don't want to think along this line. I never had faith in awards. As long as he acts this well, the satisfaction is enough.

Although he has been acting a variant of a law enforcement officer in Ojakgyo Brothers, Gaksital, SIU and a special agent in 7th Level Civil Servant, the personality of his characters are totally different. We are lucky that he sets out to do characters who are not similiar.

Whenever Joo Won is mentioned, I always see criticisms of him overacting. IMO, he is as fine an actor you can get from his generation. He has improved so much from his debut Baker King to the awesome work in Gaksital. Yes, there were weakness in his acting as Ma Jun with side glares one too many but he shone in some scenes as well.
I also wonder if those who say he overacts or is incapable of nuanced acting, have they watched him in Ojakgyo Brothers? His character there is the total opposite of Lee Kangto in Gaksital. Joo Won was loud, shouty and intense in Gaksital because that's who Lee Kangto is. In fact, after Lee Kangto don the mask, there was almost no trace of the old Kangto.
I guess this thing about overacting also boils down to personal preference. To me, some of peers looks like they are sleepwalking in their roles. It's so understated to the point I wonder if it's because they are incapable of conveying the emotions. There's just that few expressions every time.
Joo Won does go a bit dramatic at times but I know he is not one of those type of actors who can't act yet overacts. With the right direction and script, he would nail the scene.
As for this role, even as his fan, I wouldn't dare say I am sure he'd own this one as well. This is a very challenging role to play indeed. It could be too underplayed or just tilt a bit more, it would look too over the top and clownish. And that's where my admiration for his guts comes in, even after the dismal outing of 7th Level, he did not revert to a safe role but takes on a more challenging one. If he fails this time, his career might take a hard knock. He didn't take on this role because of vanity or greed either. This is an actor who is taking 8 months hiatus to go and do musical end of this year. If he takes this role, it would be because this is in line with his objective which is to stretch and challenge himself. The stakes are high but I am so glad to have someone who is not afraid to fail.
