Gong Hyo-jin and Park Hae-il headline new film
by girlfriday
Oooh, Park Hae-il (Bow, The Ultimate Weapon) and Gong Hyo-jin (Love Fiction, 577 Project) together? Color me interested. Too bad it’s not a romantic pairing though; it’s a brother-sister duo for this project. They’ve signed on to headline a new movie called Aging Family, about a trio of grown children who return home to their aging mom, resulting in sibling hijinks and uncovering some family secrets along the way.
The cast is the big draw for this project, with four great actors rounded up to play the titular family. Park Hae-il, Gong Hyo-jin, and Yoon Jae-mun (King 2 Hearts, Tree With Deep Roots) play the three kids, and Mom is Yoon Yeo-jung (You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly, King 2 Hearts). That’s one talented family.
I especially like the mom and eldest son pair, because they had great chemistry as mortal enemies on The King 2 Hearts. I loved that even as Mom was scared that the crazy egomaniacal villain would kill her, she scolded the madman like a wayward child. I can totally see a great mother-son relationship for them in the film, whether it calls for comedy or gut-wrenching drama. Ideally a nice mix of both.
The story is based on a novel of the same name by Chun Myung-kwan, and the film is described as cheery, lighthearted, and about a series of adventures as a family reunites as adults. But the novel apparently has a makjang element to it. Hrm. I feel like that pretty much translates into birth secret, but obviously it could be any number of other things.
Does that mean Park Hae-il and Gong Hyo-jin ARE playing a romantic pair? Sigh. Please let it be some other thing. Anything. Say, Big Bro has a secret life as a magician and sometimes-evildoer, and likes to lure people to the dark side with cookies? I just hope that the film sticks to a non-makjang telling of whatever this secret is, because with this cast we could get a really stellar heartwarming family drama.
Aging Family will be directed by PD Song Hae-sung (Our Happy Time, Failan) and starts shooting in mid-October for a 2013 release.

Yoon Jae-mun is a great villain, love and hate him in tree With Deep Roots. Yoon and Jeong Bo-Seok (Jo Pil-Yeon in Giant) are my 2 favorite Villains in K-dramaland.
I was so excited to see Jeong Bo-seok as Eun-oh teacher in Arang. I wish it was it longer.

Still watching her in 'My Husband Got A Family'; it's not quite over here in SF. Was crying my eyes out last night, watching her tell her husband (Jang Yong) how he and his mother mistreated her for 30 years. It tore my heart out. Gaaa!

GF just had to bring me back.
BTW, this mother-son relationship will be such a hoot to watch, if it's anywhere near their relationship in k2h <3

Park Hae-il <3." Bow, The Ultimate Weapon " is one of my favorite sageuk movies. Park was Faaaaaan-tas-tic and I love love love Moon Chae-won in it too. I thought she was a good actress before but after watching her in Bow I became a fan.
I'm sad that we dont get to see more of Park in dramaland like his co-stars but I'm excited nevertheless with any news of him. Thank you ladies for going the extra miles, I love all your movie reviews.

Park Hae Il in a drama would be the stuff of dreams. All the mature actors have pretty much migrated to the movie scene in recent years along with the promising new actresses so the flower boys have run amok in dramaland.

I love Yoon Yeo-jung. She brings something to everything she is in. I have watched her glow even in mediocre fare (Heading to the Ground anyone?) and she made me care about her character and all the characters who are around her. She is the kind of actress that makes everyone else around her better. I hope this will not be one of those movies that never gets released with subs. My Korean won't be that good in October 13. I will only have been studying it for a year!

You took the words right out of my mouth, trotwood! I adore Yoon Yeo-jung. What do you think it is about her? She's definitely got a distinct voice but it's her versatility (she can be adorable, mysterious, etc.). Definitely one of my favorite actors, period.

Whoa, I didn't recognize Park Hae Il in the above pic because he was smiling, lol. Love all four of them. And this seems like a drama, rather than a movie, based on the synopsis~~

LOL...Yoon Yeo Jung and Yoon Je Mun as mom and son.... that idea tickles me so much cuz of how much hate was going on there thanks to K2H....but they are both really great actors, so of course things will be made believable here no matter what.....also I just adore Yoon Yeo Jung to no end....this woman is Korea's national treasure...she practically lives everyone of her characters...recently read an article on her that almost brought me to tears : http://daheefanel.wordpress.com/2012/08/27/noh-hee-kyungs-love-essay-11/

mmm... cookies. I would join the evil doers if they had an endless supply of Chips Ahoy. They are my weakness. But back to the subject at hand. I would watch anything with Gong Hyo Jin. I love her!

And Park Hae-il kind of looks like a cross between Cha Tae-hyun and Lee Sun-gyun (in this picture). But it's probably just me, haha.

Wish she'd come back to dramaland. I never get to see these movies. I get excited for them, then I forget about them, and when they finally do get subbed, I'm too wrapped up watching some drama to care enough to watch it.

In the novel the siblings are described as having "average age of 49" with the oldest being 52. So it looks like one change will be making all the siblings younger. One makjang element definitely is birth secret.

Love GYJ! And the other son and mother pair are both awesome character actors. And the material sounds interesting enough and as GF said, hope the delivery is going to match up even if there will be the (cliche) makjang elements..
