Sungkyunkwan PD and writer reteam for campus music drama
by girlfriday
What do you get when you cross campus fusion sageuk Sungkyunkwan Scandal with sing-off, dance-off, battle of the divas Dream High? Something awesome is what. The production team behind last year’s cracktastic hit drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal — PD Kim Won-seok and writer Kim Tae-hee — are gettin’ the band back together for a new drama on cable network Mnet, to compete with the Dream High franchise in the new year. Awwwww, yeah.
Sadly, what they’re not going to do is just combine the two shows, and set the musical campus drama in the Joseon era. ‘Cause that’s what I would do. I mean, another Dream High/Glee is been there, done that, but Joseon-era scholars singing and dancing to kpop? Now that’d be something to see. I suppose the double-fusion concept’s a little too out there for most, but hey, in a drama landscape where your competition is vampire alien idols, you gotta do what you can to stand out.
The CJ E&M production is being touted as another Dream High (but more Glee-like than Dream High-esque, which seems like a rather slight difference, conceptually). Essentially we’re talking: high school + popular music + showbiz + hopes and dreams. It’ll be Mnet’s first music drama, as it joins the ranks of cable networks putting out original scripted content to compete with the Big 3. Hopefully it’ll be cast with actors who can also sing, and not the other way around. The market does seem pretty damn saturated lately with campus music dramas, so hopefully this one takes enough of a bent to differentiate itself. If it’s from the team behind Sungkyunkwan, we can at least expect it to be stylish and crackalicious, that’s for sure.
Yet-to-be-named Music Drama will air in 2012, in what looks to be quite the year of cable dramas to come.

This year we've had Dream High, Heartstrings, The Musical, and the upcoming What's Up...that's four 'campus music' dramas in a year. I'm also a little fatigued since I've already seen the first two, but I've been waiting on What's Up so long that I'm going to watch it. With it's writer and actors, it looks like the best out of the four. Why don't we have a Music Drama Awards at the end of the year?

Yea.. way too much music dramas, and I never thought I would say that... but let's hope this idea is new and different from most of the musical dramas. Since it's from the Sungkyunkwan writers and producers, it should be something new and intriguing... lets hope they don't copy from others and stay original! xD, but I'm still excited!

Heartstrings doesn't really count though, cuz they sang like, 3 songs repeatedly. I'm never going to get enough of singing students so I'm all for another one :-)

I haven't been feeling it since I haven't kept up with (most episodes) of these shows....
If you're not watching them, it's more like this is the year for Sageuks :/
And doctors.......
And cabal.
Wait. This is the year where everything comes in big handfuls at a time. *sigh*

if they're aiming to be more Glee-like, then i'm hoping for a really outstanding musician/producer to be onboard with the music production for this drama. i think one of the main reasons why Dream High was pretty darn amazing was thanks to JYP's music production :D (i'm pretty sure he'll be bringing that awesomeness to season 2 as well!)
this'll definitely be interesting to watch. thank god in january i'll be on break! more dramas! hehe

Excited.
I must admit I've had a little too much of campus/music dramas, but considering the fact that I am STILL not completely over sungkyunkwan, I am kind of excited.
I mean can you imagine Geol Oh singing melancholy soft-rock with Yeorim fan-girling all over the place? HEAVEN. Sighss* as if that would ever happen. Except for in my head. where its happening now (daydreams for a while).
So many dramas to watch, so little time. Stupid assignments.
Ah screw university. I can always resit next year right?

Hope it will be more DH-esque, but we already have DH2 for that. I'm not really a fan of Glee what with all the loose ends and character inconsistencies. Heartstrings was so-so though the leads appealed to me, meanwhile The Musical didn't really have enough to get me onboard. Anyway, is Dec 3 the airdate for What's Up? on MBN?
For this new musical drama, as long as the writing, directing, & music's good then count me in.

Yay! Glee! I only watched Dream High, so I hope it'll be similar to it. I didn't really care for the others.

Actually the first thing that came to my mind was 'another one?' I hope they dont end up having plot with a change of actors. I am wondering why can't they revive a genre that haven't been on lately like some revenge/ thriller/ crime dramas. The only one that I know of airing right now is Vampire Prosecutor.

A sageuk fusion musical drama written by the Hong Sisters. This is the greatest idea and also the greatest tragedy because it will never be.... :(

"Joseon-era scholars singing and dancing to kpop" HA! Your brain must be a very interesting place, Girlfriday! I'm so grateful that you let us all visit now and then. The only downside is that now any campus based musical drama is going to pale in comparison!!

I thought there was going to be a Dream High sequel anyway, same PD and stuff but different cast? And compare anything to Glee to me and I am so NOT there. In fact when I think of Glee I think of something that drags on way too long and gets tired. The traditional brevity of kdramas should remedy that. But, just don't compare smthn to Glee if you wanna sell it to me! Sukyungkwan Scandal, sure. That was pretty good.

Even though I thought 'another one', I'm still interested because of the writing staff. XD Also, cable dramas have a different flavour that I'm liking.

GF, that's what I would do, too! Can't you guys go write dramas or something? I would watch that shit.
Anyway, this sounds like tons of fun, and hopefully they will find a different angle for it.

SKKS and Dream High are two of the most addictive K-dramas I've ever seen. Now there's a fusion/mash-up? Oh yeah, I'm up for it! Bring the cheese on! ^_^
