New posters and a teaser for You’re My Pet
by girlfriday
Me-ow. Well they were certainly going for sex kitten with the poster concept, only they seem to have split the difference, sexy for Kim Haneul and… just kitty for Jang Geun-seok. How come he gets bad hair, a furry sweater AND a box, while she gets a shirt and a cheeky lolli? A few more posters and a teaser (finally!) are out for the upcoming November release of highly anticipated rom-com remake You’re My Pet, and so far, they’ve done a good job of keeping my interest in the strange pairing between a noona and her pet.
Kim Haneul looks even better here than in the first poster, all come-hither tease with the tagline: “Come on, baby,” while Jang Geun-seok’s poster goes for the cutesy pet-on-your-doorstep vibe, with the tagline: “Would you like to try raising me?”
The trailer looks fun, and shows the pair in a pretty literal interpretation of the pet-master relationship, where Kim Haneul is the uptight careerwoman and Jang Geun-seok is the new puppy that she has to housebreak. I didn’t know he was actually going to ACT like a pet, which just makes it all the more ridiculous and awesome. The premise of raising a man-pet is batty anyway, so why not just run with it?
At the end of the teaser he crawls into her bed like a puppy and when she balks, he assures her, “I only touched your breasts, nothing else!” Pffffft. Down boy. I sort of can’t believe that no one’s thought to cast Jang Geun-seok as a man-puppy until now. Doesn’t this just seem tailor-made for him alone?
You’re My Pet premieres in November. Between this and Penny-Pinching Romance, it looks like we’ve got a battle of the noona killers going on. Aw, and it’s not even my birthday.

Kimi Wa Petto was a great dorama. Boys Over Flowers put me off unoriginal k dramas though [yes, I believe the Japanese version was the best] and Ikemen Desu Ne [based on "You're Beautiful"] put me off doramas based on k dramas. Despite this stigma I'll try out "You're my Pet" but I am not putting my hopes up...

Oh yes. Hana Yori Dango was the best Hana Yori Dango manga adaptation. The Japanese F4 may not look like the manga F4, but they embody the manga F4 characters. And the sets? Lovely. Lovely colours. Images. Yep, Hana Dan was THE Hana Yori Dango.

Put Amen! I've come to realize that I don't like it often when a j-dorama gets made into a kdrama (Can't Lose being one of the better exceptions), and perhaps even vice versa. J-doramas just have elements that separate it from kdramas, and the same can be said the other way around.
I loved the Japanese version of Hanadan, so I'm worried about the kdrama reboot for my beloved Japanese version of Hana Kimi. All I ask of you SM Entertainment, is that if you're going to pick an idol to do the part, make sure it's someone that fits the role of Mizuki the way Maki did: small and lively. But maybe even put a tomboy in there like Ella Chen if you can, I mean you do have Amber afterall.

When you mentioned idol for the korean adaptation of Hana Kimi, what comes to my mind is only SANDARA PARK. I mean, when I saw her with her vegeta hair in 2NE1's performances of I am the Best, she really looks like she can pull off the tomboyish character in Hana Kimi.
"small and lively" with a tomboyish look... hmmm.... Dara Park.
Although, I think it's impossible because she's from YG Entertainment.

Well, I think she can act.... from what I read, she was supposed to debut as an actress not in 2NE1. She was training in acting before dancing and singing. She had acting experiences as well.
Oh well, I don't think she'll act in Hana Kimi, SM will not promote someone from YG anyway.

Not like you have more time to spare, but you should try Kimi wa Petto with MatsuJun and Koyuki. Or, just skip that and rock the manga. It's a pretty twisted concept, but oh-so-wonderful to indulge in.
And I agree 1000000% that this role was made for JGS, the eternal man-puppy.
Only one complaint: JGS is hotter than MatsuJun and MatsuJun went shirtless for his baths in the Japanese version. Why are you depriving me K-movie? WHY?! (Yes, I'm into younger men...wait...am I caught by noona killer man-puppy? uh-oh...)
Happy 5,000th btw. You rock my entire drawer of socks. (Not least of all because MGIAG also completes me.)

I'd have to rate them fairly equal in looks (maybe for the most part JGS scoring just a point or 2 above Matsujun), because depending on the angle, sometimes they both look cute, sometimes adorkable, sometimes hot, and sometimes meh. That, and it all depends on what looks you prefer on a man.

I vote for Matsujun (-: (though JGS isn't bad at all).
I guess Matsujun looks a bit more kid-like (certainly in Kimi Wa Pet, which after all was filmed in 2003 when he was just 20, but even now although he's older than JGS).
Kim Jae Wook, Masaki Okada (a sort of younger version of KJW) and Yamashita Tomohisa are all gorgeous too. Could extend that list, but shall stop being shallow now!

*whispers* I think my vote will almost always fall on Arashi just because... Even when I should know better. Heh.
And since you insist on j-dorama name dropping, can I include Hiro Mizushima, Osamu Mukai, Matsuda Shota, and Oguri Shun and Yamada Takayuki (because the Crows Zero pairing are too badass not to mention)??? Will stop being shallow now too. ^_~

****WARNING: Shallow words to follow****
Ani, meatier men are definitely up my ally (Cha Seung-won, Park Shi-hoo). I don't want to weight more than my man and that's not hard when their 110lb. And I do like Mizushima Hiro but he's a tad skinny, too no? Doesn't it sadden you that he withdrew from the screen to be a writer? Oguri Shun is cute too but those TEETH!
JGS looks adorable in this, but can he be more adorable than MatsuJun on screen? DUN DUN DUN.
Ani
October 4, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Oh I agree about Hiro being waaay too thin. They always seem that way. And yes, he needs to come back ASAP! I Like Osamu Mukai's build though. And tall too. Oguri Shun's smile has grown on me. My friend once spazzed about how she'd like him to use those teeth on her. *shivers* Gross, but that was her way of saying she loved his teeth. HAHAHA. I love guys with the "not so picture perfect or symmetrical" smiles though, so I can't blame her.
And given JGS's image, I think he can pull off the cute, I just want to see him be more macho is his next role.
alua
October 4, 2011 at 1:56 PM
You can. (-:
I don't mind the skinny though (but I'm 5 feet and less than 110lb so that might explain it).
I think it's kind of cool Hiro withdrew to be a writer (and would like to read his book)... but I think chances are he'll be back on the screen at some point. Or perhaps behind the screen, directing? Or writing screenplays?

Alua: It is wonderful that Hiro is a writer! I hope his hiatus is short lived, but you never know with those creative types. Did you see Tokyo dogs? He was hysterical in that! (And did you know he speaks some sexy English, too?) As an aside, I really enjoy your writing style in your blog. It reminds me of Madeleine L'engle's voice in The Small Rain.
Ani: Normally I'm not hugely picky, but his teeth really do bother me. HOwever, if he approached me I wouldn't say no...:P As for JGS, I want to see him with the acting chops he had in YOu're Beautiful but with the masculinity of Beethoven Virus.

Just added Tokyo Dogs to my things-to-watch list (which is getting too long!).
Thanks for complimenting my blog (-: I only just started... we'll see where it goes! I have tickets for a number of Korean and Japanese films at two film festivals this month and am hoping to review them all. All are having either their UK or European premieres, but no director/cast Q&A's unfortunately.
I'm also impatiently waiting for the programme of the London Korean Film Festival (in November) to come out!

Alua,
You are so lucky to be near all those festivals! I've never been to one before. I've only just recently started my interest in film. So far the festivals around Miami, FL are geared towards Latin American films.
I'll be in England next year for a wedding. (I think they're planning Cambridge, but that's near enough London to check out any film happenings, no?)
Anywho, I just started my blog as well. Here's to building them up! *raises glass*

Weddings in Cambridge totally rock. Went for one in May, and we went punting (with champagne and strawberries to nourish us) afterwards. It was the bride's idea (being a foreigner - it wasn't a typical Brit-wedding-thing to do), but it was the best idea ever.
Cambridge is just an hour by train from London (from King's Cross), so not far at all.
Truth be told, there are too many film festivals here. Major ones like the British Film Institute Film Festival but also a good dozen (or more?) of smaller, indie ones. Occasionally I try to volunteer at them, because at least that way I can usually score some free tickets. (-:

I'm super stoked just to go back to England. I really loved Cambridge when I was there! I can't imagine punting as a wedding activity, but the strawberries and champagne would win me over. :) And hey, I like punting. I went several times when I was there *blushes*.
I like to volunteer to usher musicals when I can 'cause then you can watch them... heehee

In the original, didnt Momo run away and Sumire jokingly said he could be her pet to stay, only to be taken seriously?

Nah, in the original (both the manga and the J-drama) Sumire tells Momo (JGS' character) that he can only stay with her if it's as a pet (i.e. no human rights, he must behave like a pet, etc) in an attempt to make him leave, only her plan backfires when he agrees to it, thus starting their unconventional living arrangements.

ack, ignore that, You meant it as in Momo had run away from elsewhere, and not from Sumire, before the deal was made, right? XD;;
But yeah, even in the book Sumire was perfectly flawed/insecure/human once she was home and out of the office, so aside from the heights not being perfect, I think they're doing a fair job keeping it true to the original, while still fresh.

Kim Haneul was not on my radar until 1N2D, but she was so great to watch on that show that i'm intrigued. i love girls that put off a girly-girl image, but aren't afraid (or annoyed) to get dirty. she was lots of fun to watch. Jang Geun-Seok, in contrast, annoys the hell out of me. I want to like him, but the fact that he is more of a girl than my sister (who has 2 kids), and exudes inverse manliness, makes me annoyed when i see him. i have to wonder about all the ladies who follow this site who find him attractive. he is, for all intents and purposes, a girl. i'm no homophobe, but sometimes you gotta call a spade a spade, and that dude's as spade as the day is long...

His charm, his character, his manly side... we ourselves can't describe by one sentence. The more we understand him, the more vague we are. We are not teengirl loving his beauty. We love him because he's JKS
“The hottest males are now men such as Jang Geun-suk, from the Suntory Seoul Makkori poster, who is said to be a ‘roll-cabbage man.’
“He may look weak and feminine in appearance, but actually he's considered very desirable, and driven to get want he wants, such as women and success at work,”

I'm not sure what you are saying or what you are trying to imply but it's a little fishy...
That he is gay? Who knows.
That we are gay for liking him?
I am actually, but my sister's not and she's mad about the boy.
That straight gals couldn't possible desire him?
Pffft! A straight woman can be attracted to a feminine man just like a straight man can be attracted to a masculine woman.
Same for gay gals and boys.
Androgyny is part of the k-entertainment industry and it's one of the reasons it's so successful.
Whether he is a "spade" or not is none of my concern.
And last but not least: Kim Haneul makes my heart beat faster.

I agree 1000x with what you've said^^
I had a bio teacher tell me once that women are genetically inclined to feel the hots for "manly, rugged hairy men, " and I about just peed laughing... because then I must not be a woman genetically though phenotypically I am. because my tastes truly do run in the more delicate direction. I like beautiful men, they just make my day, it's the reason why my sister is kind of bewildered that I actually have a Siwon poster, since he's the most obviously manly looking man in my crush collection.
And just because they're pretty doesn't mean they aren't manly. I have a huge major very un-secret crush on SJ's Heechul. Heechul, is as pretty looking as a guy can get, but if you watch him talk seriously in interviews when he's not trying to get a laugh out of the audience then he is obviously very male. I like manly attitude > manly looks.

In "A Thousand Kisses" one of the couples is older man/younger woman. I think 35/26? (And, even more interesting, in real life there is a 17 year difference between the actors.)
If not a drama, the Korean film "Hello Schoolgirl" has an older guy/younger woman combo as well - the guy is 30, the girl I think 18. They are wonderful together, but then it's a really quite well made film (I'll review it soon on my blog).

I've noticed that too... I think at first it was the taboo aspect of an older woman with a younger man, it was unusual and not generally accepted by society... but now it's almost become the norm. It's definitely more common that the older man-younger woman pairing now. To be honest noona-dongsaeng relationships do nothing for me - I don't have a problem with them, but I find them boring and I feel like I've watched more than enough to last me quite a while.
If you're up for a long family drama, A Thousand Kisses features an older man with a younger woman as the secondary couple. Ryu Jin and Kim So-eun - they are SO adorable together, I actually like them a teeny bit more than the main couple.

I think it's the fantasy of it. Rom-Com is generally ladies fair, and noona-dongseang relationships seek to fulfill that fantasy? You know, the idea that older women are beautiful and still "marketable" and can attract younger, fresh-faced men...
The reverse works too when it's done right (older men, younger women) but since it's more common, there's no novelty factor?

true. It's like liven up those pervert ajumma's fantasies. which in real life, mostly they can get any of those younger guys.

even if other people hates his hair i think he plays the part of momo perfectly.....it is as if momo was made with jang keun suk in mind, its kinda hard to believe that the manga came out so long ago
