Kim Jae-won heads for surgery, hopes to continue drama
by javabeans
It appears that his recent motorcycle accident — sustained while filming the upcoming drama Me Too, Flower! — was bad enough that Kim Jae-won will be needing shoulder surgery, which is the reason that he was reportedly dropping out of the drama.
However, Kim Jae-won has come out with an official statement, delivered via his agency, stating his desire to keep filming. It doesn’t mean that he will — just that he’s going to try to stick with the production.
His agency described the accident: “On the drama’s first shooting day on October 4, Kim Jae-won was riding a motorcycle that went from a standstill into sudden acceleration, and to avoid injuring people around him, he applied the front brakes. As he did that, the bike lifted into the air at nearly a 90-degree angle, and that led to his shoulder dislocation. He was then taken to the emergency room.”
The statement continued, “Through three detailed examinations, it was determined that Kim ruptured his ligaments and cartilage, and a fracture was detected in the bone. He was told he would need three to four weeks of rest. If he were to dislocate his shoulder again, he was told he may disable it and that surgery would be necessary.”
Despite his condition, his management is not ready to make a definite answer whether he will continue or withdraw: “Kim Jae-won and the producers have worked hard in preparation for this drama, so he is hopeful that while he takes three to four weeks to rest and recover, he will be able to return to filming and stay till the end. More than anything, he and the producers have great attachment to this drama, and he is regretful that things have turned out this way. He promises to do his utmost to come to the best decision with the producers. He wishes to convey his apologies to his fellow actors, the viewers, and fans.”
Okay, now that we’ve got the facts down: WHAT THE WHAT, DRAMA? Two weeks before your scheduled premiere and you still don’t know whether or not you have a leading man? I repeat: TWO WEEKS.
Kim’s commitment is great, of course, and I’m sure he’s feeling all sorts of guilty and responsible for putting the production in the lurch. However, I worry that sticking to the show is not in his best interests, and certainly not the safest condition for his health. If you almost flip a motorcycle on top of yourself and half-tear out your arm from your socket, you might want to take care of that before getting guilted into about three months of grueling, all-night shoots. This drama was not operating on a leisurely timetable to begin with, and this uncertainty just messes with it even more.
And what about the producers? What if Kim Jae-won ends up too injured to continue, only now you’ve stopped looking for a replacement and wind up truly and utterly screwed? How are you going to put out a drama about several women (Lee Jia, Seo Hyo-rim, Han Go-eun) entangled with a multiple-identity-possessing hero when you have no hero?
Eeeep. I hope Me Too, Flower can pull itself together and make it work, if only just because it’ll be too sad if it doesn’t.

Poor Kim Jae-Won, wishing for rest and actually getting it are two different things. He's known to be a really committed guy too, so it must be hard for him to step away from the project.
They probably should just halt the drama for awhile and air something... you know, already made? hah

I'm with you on this! It's really a prime answer for the drama and SBS if they just snag What's Up as a place holder while Kim Jae-won heals and give them some time to find another lead if they need to.

I really wanna see What's Up too, but isn't Daesung from Big Bang in it? I don't think they'd put it up seeing on that there's a lot of drama going on with them right now.

ehh, are you talking about the GDragon Pot scandal or the Daesung car-accident issue?
I dont know how big Daesung's part is in the drama, but it'd be sad if he was blacklisted all his life for this. The controversy reminds me of what happened with Ryu Shiwon...

They really need some sense knocked into them. He shouldn't push himself to return and the PDs shouldn't accept that desire either. Either wait and air something else or find a new lead.

I am so frustrated with K-dramas. It is starting to make me feel guilty that I want to abandon these slavery-made dramas. Seriously...this type of situation should not exist in the first place. It is so sad / frustrating / crazy to think that they even considered this at all... What kind of monetary pressure do they have to think that this will work?
WHAT! I am just fed-up with these type of news.

To me, it does not matter how much they are paid. It is all relative what they are paid and what it is worth to each of us.
Slavery is a condition where these actors are considered as a "property" continually by the production companies / tv-making industry in Korea. They are "forced to work" in these situations because that is how the system to survive in this particular industry works. It is cultural and it is survival of the fittest. Whoever can be fit to film almost 24 hours for 3 months.

Normally we go through dramas and see the actors looking fresh-faced and bright at the beginning, while towards the end we see their decline - sallower skin, major eye bags, general exhaustion. But I'm a little worried that we won't even get that fresh-faced start in this drama, if everyone is going out of the starting gate exhausted and already overworked. That can't bode well for the rest of the series. :/

MBC needs to stop twiddling their thumbs and start looking for a new leading man. They can't afford to waste time waiting for Kim Jae Won. The drama is set to air in 2 weeks. They should have all the cast members locked in already. They should be filming. I feel bad for the other cast members- it sounds like they'll have to suffer with the live filming conditions right off the bat.

I feel so bad for him. Earlier this year he was in a car accident where he injured his back, he continued the drama CYHMH - (which to me is the best family drama this year). I really hope he rests and fully recover before he does this drama. Making K-dramas are very grueling job. The actors are made to act in the freezing cold, and stay up all night exhausting themselves, bags appearing under their eyes, and working to the point till they need to be admitted to the hospital for IV fluids.
I appreciate the dramas, but I don't think anyone need to torture themselves like that.
A Message to KTW:
Please KTW, don't feel guilt for being in the condition that you are in. It is the hazards of the job and its to be expected. Just please get well. I understand commitment and dedication to your job, but I also understand looking out for ones self. Please do not go back to work until you are healthy are cleared by the doctor.

There's a really easy answer to this. Change this to a lesbian romance. Two scenerios:
Take Han Go-eun's character takes over the double life, but add another layer with her character being in the closet. However, while being a parking attendent she's falling for Lee Jia's character, which causes her to think about coming out of the closet. This has all sorts of problems as Lee Jia's character wants them to be out. Meanwhile Han Go-eun's character's beard and Seo Hyo-rim have the hots for each other, but Beard doesn't want to out Go-eun's character and Seo Hyo-rim's character angsts about "stealing away another woman's man". Hilarity can also ensue from the many, many misunderstandings.
Scenerio two, some changes, but still some same big plot points like number one:
Have Seo Hyo-rim's character ditch the younger sister part to have her placed in the double life. Lee Jia as her interest and Han Go-eun's CEO as the competing second lead. To run interference Han Go-eun's character hires a man to play as Seo Hyo-rim's beard. Angst ensues because Seo Hyo-rim's character doesn't want to be exposed, but at the same time wants Lee Jia's character without all the lying and hurting an innocent in this game. Meanwhile hapless Beard has no idea and tries to have this happen with little luck.

KJW should really rest! I wonder if the reason he is hoping to rush into the drama with his arm barely healed is because he really wants to in order to assuage his misplaced guilt or if the production has put some pressure or extra guilt on him to return.

Ok, this is stupid. If KJW is that seriously injured he just needs to back out of the drama. You could say that's dedication or whatever, but it seems unlikely that he'll be in fit condition to do 24-hour shoots for the next three months so he's pretty much screwing the drama over if his condition is too bad to continue shooting. The producers should've told him to step down anyway instead of keeping him on and looked for another lead. Yeah, it's short notice, but it's better (and I mean a little, bitty better) to do rushed shooting with a new lead instead of having your lead drop out after the drama's started airing.

I understand this dilemma. I've been in it on a much smaller scale. But bowing out quietly is preferable to stalling an entire production that involves a large number of people, organizations and funding. I hope he decides soon because he's keeping everyone on pins and needles!

All of this is effed up. Why should Kim Jae Won feel guilty? It's called an accident. If anything, the production should feel bad toward Kim Jae Won for putting him in a position where he suddenly became a stuntman. The dude has a dislocated shoulder for which he needs surgery or risk DISABILITY! I had a minor version of a similar injury albeit on my knee, and even my minor injury proves troublesome at times.
I had very little interest in this drama to begin with, but I swear, from now on, I'll just avoid any drama that has drama with its production schedule. They'll probably get their just deserts anyway, since tight schedules leave them vulnerable (as in this case) to mishaps and ergo likely to produce mediocrity at best, BUT this really is messed up.

I hurt my right arm and shoulder at the beginning of this year, without surgery. But countless session of physic, type with left hand most of the time. Still not 100% recover yet. I think it will never be 100%, just have to manage it for the rest of my life. Only realize how weak it is when I tried to do weight at gym yesterday :(
Without surgery, the doctor said it takes 6 weeks at least. But, my case, it take more than 3 months, only now it can bend well with manageable pain!!

Wait, what?! Two weeks left till premiere date?! They must be out of their minds. Even with months of pre-recorded material things can go bad quickly. And apparently keeping Kim Jae-won's character for the first 4 episodes won't do because he's the sole lead male. I'm worried for this drama, even though I'm not planning to watch it. At this point, I just hope they could finish this drama alive.

Whoa, whoaaa......Some comments says that KJW, others, (etc..) are really stupid....but it's rude to say about them, oh....for goodness' sake. O_O
I really reaaaally felt ache (inside my heart) for Kim Jae Won didn't want to give up by himself for this drama - but he want to try his best and work so hard (very carefully), of course. Aigoo......PD directors and others (whatever...) seem like they are so stubborn and want to keep him because they didn't want to change any different men for leading role, oh well......

How concerned. >_< Well, I pray that Kim Jae Won really need to rest and just take a break from too much working, of course. I DON'T understand why people who works (during this drama) with KJW didn't understand how KJW feels (he might feel so burden and bit of suffers...you never know).....I think it's better for them to try to find any different men to get a lead role and give KJW a 'looong-ish' break!!!

they're probably having difficulty finding a new lead to take over? considering how if someone enters he'll be in an extremely rushed situation plus the lee jia was in a scandal earlier this year... I can see why not many people would want to take up this role... if not I can't see why the production team would consider keeping kim jaewon on considering how his injury would definitely postpone and slow down filming and all...

I would prefer he drop out and take care of his shoulder so that he can continue to be in a million more dramas then to force himself to continue this one and be his last. I'm sad that he has to make this kind of decision.
It's so crazy that the industry has two crazy sides to it. One is the actors who suffer to keep their drama schedules like Kim Jae-won and Song Ji Hyo risking their health and the other Han Ye Seul who refuses to risk her health and walks off the job.
It's crazy that Han Ye Seul got so much hate for standing up for her health and it's crazy for other actors to risk their health to maintain their schedule. Can't we find a happy medium?

It's extremely risky for MBC and the producer to put all their eggs in one basket, KJW basket. I highly doubt that Can't Lose actors would agree for another extension. They are exhausted as it is. So two options:
1) MBC to air Can't Lose special (BTS, NG's, interviews, etc). I know this drama is not popular but at least the materials for putting together a special episode are already half made. just need to do a few editing work. It would make a small number of fans happy. But hey, do you really have much option at this point???
2) Have Uhm Ki Joon be the main lead in this Flower drama. Agree ?? it would be a galore of UKJ, starting from Scent of Woman, Can't Lose, and Flower drama back to back. Woo-Hoo!!

A dislocation is easy to handle although after that the chances of having a second one are high... now when it comes to raptures and the fracture that basicaly means that he will have to have a rather relaxed yet stiff posture (weird I know). In my opinion he can continue filming but it will be a challenge to complete certain scenes without this bothering him.
The surgery is unavoidable in the future if he strain his injury but I believe that if the director takes the right precuations, the result will be amazing and his health won't suffer further.
