Kim Myung-min races in Pace Maker

The Method man strikes again: Kim Myung-min takes on the role of an elite-level runner for his new movie Pace Maker, and it looks like he’s dropped yet more weight to do it. Eep!

I’d thought he’d lost all the weight he could afford to lose (and then some) for his movie My Love By My Side, and was relieved when that was over, for the sake of his health. But here he is, looking gaunt again to act the role of a pace maker, who participates in the first part of a marathon to keep the pace for its frontrunner, and then drops out. But he dreams of being a contender himself; ergo, movie.

Apparently Kim injured his right leg while filming another one. Coincidentally, his Man-ho character in Pace Maker also has a right-leg injury. I’ve read enough about Kim’s insane Method acting to feel relieved that his injury came first, lest he pursue yet more masochistic activity in the name of realism.

Kim called the movie “a very hopeful and touching human story.” You know what would give me hope? If he started EATING again! Sigh. Filming began on Pace Maker on April 11, and plans to release in the latter half of the year.

Below, he trains for the role:

Yikes so skinny, I didn't recognize him.

Somehow remind me of Christian Bale about on and off of losing weight.

For Midas, so he can really look like he's wasting away. :(

I guess we should be happy that he's taking acting seriously, instead of trying to get by with just his looks because the hallmark of a good actor is --- OH WHO ARE WE KIDDING.

We watch Noh Min Woo for the prettttttttttty.

(I kid. I kid. Look at Jae Hee: I love him despite his not-evident-hotness because he's a brilliant actor)

Waah, he looks horrible. Hard to remember what a handsome guy he was (can be)... he definitely needs to take on the role of someone who eats properly!! Maybe a nutritionist or something!!

I don't care what he plays as long as he gets back to TV drama. These movies, as good as they may be, are here today, gone today. K-drama is the gift that keeps on giving.

What's 'Method Acting'?
I know there's two ways to approach acting. And I know that one of them is Method Acting but that's all the info that is retain in my clueless royal mind.

it's just for a movie role, i'm sure he eats regularly and will gain back the weight.

i don't like how some people just assume that when someone is skinny it's because they don't eat. we do, i do. i'm quite skinny, but that doesn't mean i don't eat or like to starve myself. some people just don't gain weight no matter how much they eat.

Haven't posted here in a while but I greatly respect Kim Myung Min so I feel I have to. I'm all for method acting and going to certain extremes for a role, but not all the time. One role, if it's a career changing one, yes. But constant weight loss and gain tires one out and makes them age faster.

Look at his face! He's 39 and he looks 50! Not to mention what it does for his health, not just looks. I'm all for convincing acting, but ANY viewer knows they're just watching a movie. Even if you bring yourself to such a state, it won't change that.. If anything, it distracts the viewer more and reminds them it's a movie because they suddenly see someone they have seen in a certain state become totally different. It stands out and breaks the immersion.

And method acting isn't the only reasons. With younger folk and kdrama, it's a matter or promoting trends. Trends by fashion and clothing companies who want to sell clothes for big prices with less materials. The trend of skinniness comes from them. Yes, let No Min Woo lose 6 kilos. Cause the character has cancer and all. Plus, company A really wants to sell them clothes that would look good on him if he's all bones! Same with Secret Garden. Joo Won is a businessman who is too busy to be well-fed? So, all businessmen are skinny? Funny, cause most of em eat better than the average person, busy or not. So they turned Hyun Bin into someone with a sunken face to sell the suits and cause it's fashionable. And now he looks like a stick in the army.

Not to mention what they do to their women who feel compelled to undergo tons of plastic surgery and dieting to look like tiny perfect dolls. One more plastic than the other.

My point is, be it "method acting" or the trends, the hectic schedules or the outrageous demands, S. Korea is really neglecting the basic rights and needs of its actors. It's up to the industry to change that and up to the actors to stop acting like it's their duty to do these things, say enough is enough and stop doing crap and calling it sugar.

Forgive my tone, but I am vocal and passionate about my opinions.

I truly admire Kim Myun Min. I have to agree that he is going too far with weight loss and his roles. As has been mentioned by several others, this really is damaging to his health and I would think his psyche as well. He does not look good. I found him very appealing in 'Beethoven's Virus' and I think that is a good weight for him. I would think he could find a way to make us believe he is thin and a runner without looking like he is one step away from a concentration camp. In spite of it all, I love Kim Myun Min.

It is such a shame that this producers heavily rely on cheap illegal labor by employing part of the cast under the table owing to the fact that they do not have work permits to work in this country. By so doing this producers are denying Government of Korea taxes. I recently took part in a shoot of a local movie of in Yangsan where we were forced to work for up to 16 hours straight and we could complain due to the fact that we are foreign students and without a contract with the producers. Students were offered inhumane accommodation!! Made to sleep three per room original meant for single person and to even make it worse they slept on the floor and were fed half a sausage and rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A small part of students who tried to raise these concerns were fired and forced to leave without to pay and I hear that they had to walk for over five kilometers from the remote filming area to access the nearest train station from which they were helped to find their way back to their Universities having sustained severe sunburn and foot soar.
It’s so bad to note that Korea film and drama industry is thriving on what borders on slavery. It’s so painful to have been in those students position!! After posing as marathoners the previous day which means that they must have ran over 20 kilometers in the sun, the rogue agents employed by the producers showed them no mercy by denying them pay and making them walk over 5 kilometers after threatening to have them arrested for being in a restricted filming site.
This movie is set to be released in either September or October 2011 and I am made to understand that had a budget of USD 3.5 Million
