Weekend sageuk King Geunchogo extended
by javabeans
King Geunchogo fans will be happy (I think?) to hear that the big-budget historical drama will be getting an additional 10 episodes, which brings its run through June.
The KBS weekend drama starring Kam Woo-sung as a Baekche-era (4th century) warrior king was initially planned for 50 episodes, but has been granted the extension by the broadcast station. KBS was reportedly looking at an extension of 20 to 30 episodes in total, but ultimately decided on 10 instead, and will then make way for its successor drama, King Gwanggaeto, which will begin filming in March. The weekends love ’em their sageuks.
The drama has not been performing particularly strongly in the ratings, holding steady in the 10% to 12% range. Ordinarily those numbers wouldn’t merit extending, but sageuk dramas tend to play by slightly different rules, and I’ve heard generally favorable remarks about the series. Perhaps consideration for its follow-up series also plays a role, although that much is purely speculation on my part. (It wouldn’t be unheard-of, though; Queen of Reversals owed the filming delays of The Duo for its extension much more than it did its middling ratings.)
The drama also stars Kim Ji-soo, Lee Jong-won, Lee Ji-hoon, and Ahn Jae-mo.

Well, it was originally planned for 70. Then whacked to 50. Then, as predicted by certain mavens when that happened, they realized they didn't have King Gwanggaeto ready to go and whooosh! they wanted to extend it again.
Me, I'm happy to get more of King Crack, so am over here rubbing my hands together. The first 10 episodes or so were crack, then it evened out for a bit, it's on episode 33-34 this weekend, so we'll see how they extend and wind up. 8-)

Fun fact: that huge collar thing on those ancient Korean armor is a neck guard. Usually fitted on heavy calvary, one of the reasons why Goguryeo was so unstoppable.
REALLY looking forward to King Gwanggaeto.

Period Kdramas generally turn me off ( exceptions being Chuno and Joseon X Files) because everyone looks unrealistically clean and I'm assuming King Geunchogo is no exception. However, I will admit that an attraction for Kim Suk Hoon as Kim Chi Yang in The Iron Empress, kept me watching even tho' the series was too long.

If you live in California (I'm in Irvine) and have Cox internet service, it comes on KBS (channel 32) every Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 - 10:30pm. It's about 10 or 7 eps behind whats showing in Korea but it has great English subs. Whoever is subbing it has great knowledge of the history/tradition of this era and I very much enjoy it.

I just started to watch this while cleaning the living room on saturday afternoon and I am hooked. I never thought I would be interested in a period drama but the story is really interesting. Also, it comes at a time when all the weekend dramas are just too crazy for my tastes. I hope it get's another 10!
