King of reversals: Park Shi-hoo interview

He’s one of those actors whose buzz you don’t really get…until you watch him in something, and then you’re like, who IS this guy, and can I have MOAR, please? Park Shi-hoo steadily made his way up the actor food chain with family dramas and daily shows, (or as the second lead in dramas like Iljimae) until his starring role in last year’s cult hit Prosecutor Princess, which wasn’t so hot ratings-wise, but had a rabid fanbase whose fervor knows no bounds. Seriously. It’s sometimes scary.
And then at the turn of the new year, he began as the second lead (again) in the workplace drama Queen of Reversals, with Kim Nam-joo and Jung Jun-ho. The show kept getting extended, and extended…and then ratings kept on rising, and rising…and the more screentime he got, the better the drama was, and the more his character romanced the heroine, the more we HAD to see what happened next. It’s actually a case where an extension allowed time for the second lead to be developed as a character…and paved the way for him to get the girl. (And keep fans from posting angry comments, I daresay.)
This is an interview conducted at a theater where he watched the last episode of Queen of Reversals with fans, a thing he likes to do.
How do you feel after having watched the last episode with fans?
I think watching the last episode with fans really remains in my heart. I like it because it becomes a happy memory for me.
There are a lot of fans here. How does it feel?
I’m thankful for fans from Thailand, Japan, everyone who flew overseas to faithfully cheer me on. I’m so touched by them. And now, even grandpas and grandmas recognize me. Lately, young kids all the way up to older people are sending me love. I’m so thankful, and amazed.
Queen of Reversals kept getting extended. Wasn’t that hard?
It was not unlike doing two dramas. Truthfully the shoot was really hard. It was like being drunk on sleep for one hour, every three days. It was a really tough decision to extend from 20 episodes to 30. But our team’s vibe was so good, and the chemistry between the actors was good, so we were able to finish the series out in good spirits. If there’s one downside, it’s that I’ve shot this drama for so long that I think it’s going to be hard for me to break out of Yong-shik’s character.
In this drama you earned a new nickname. What do you think are your best traits?
I think they’re looking favorably at me working hard on my role. In the case of Queen of Reversals, in the beginning my character was cute, and then in the latter half I had sadder scenes, and lots of scenes where I got to confess my love. I think fans are responding to the sadness in my character. Is it because they felt sorry for me? Haha. Personally, I like the nickname “꼬픈남” best. [kko-peun-nam, as in 꼬시고 싶은 남자 = a man you want to seduce] I’ll always work hard in my future projects, to keep fans’ expectations rising.
How was your chemistry with onscreen partner Kim Nam-joo?
Shooting for a long time with Kim Nam-joo sunbae made me realize that she’s such a warm sunbae [senior colleague]. I learned a lot from watching her look after everyone, from the cast to the staff. I also think that we were able to make a good drama with over 30 episodes because we worked well together. I’m thankful for that.
Your last kiss scene became quite the subject of conversation.
When we filmed the last kiss scene, the director was crying. He said, “When you cried, your sincere emotions came through, and it made me cry.” I was so grateful for his words.
From the beginning of the drama your character’s fashion sense was on display. Do you have a personal interest in style?
I like sunglasses and scarves a lot. I used a lot of my own sunglasses on the drama shoot. When styling, I like to make a point with fashion, like a prop.
What genre do you want to tackle for your next project?
I want to try something that I’ve never been able to show before. A manly role in a noir film would be good. I also get told a lot that I’d be good as a vampire, so I want to try that. Should I try a horror movie this summer? Haha.
The most memorable fan you’ve met today?
Someone with a physical disability came all this way, and even brought me a present. I felt such warmth today. As much precious love that I’m receiving, I want to keep working hard to give back more.
Any goals for the new year?
Queen of Reversals went on for a long time, but my fans cheered me on without rest, so I’m grateful. I think on an actor’s journey, the saying that you “reap what you sow” isn’t really right. I think it’s more like, “You have to work hard to reach that critical point, and only then will results show.” So you could work hard until 99, but if you don’t do that last 1 percent, everything from 0 to 99 could go to waste. I’ll try my hardest to always show you my best.

One of my very favorite actors. He could do one personality before and one after becoming vampire easily if he wants to do that.
After enough time passes, for me I hope someone writes a screenplay about Koreans in Libya, before and during uprising and escape.
Of course as a romance. He would be perfect for that.
He has a talent for making you care about all the characters he interacts with as well as his own character and that is quite a talent.

Absolutely Love Him!!! Every drama he is in is amazing.. from 'How to Meet a Perfect Neigbour' to 'Procesutor Princess'... one of my favorite actor and I sinerecely hope that he can be in more drama as main lead.. he gets good acting range and so hot.. I do want to see him as vampire.. think he will be great as one...

Sorry I don't see what's hot about Park Shi-Hoo. In QoR, he's way too pale and wears too much make-up. His acting is just average in QoR. I liked him in Ijimea a lot more than in Queen of Reversals.

I never think that he's that handsome, but SURE he's charming. He, he I know he loves sunglasses and sunglasses loves him back. Park Shi-hoo with sunglasses who can resist?!

I think he dodge that quite smoothly with that answer! :) One interview I watched, the reporter asked whether he should be apologizing to Kim Nam Joo's husband for that really long last kiss scene and he had to pause to come up with an answer! ha! ha! yes, more of Park Shi Hoo please!!!!! :D

Wise words. He seems like a very grounded and sincere person.
I've started QOR, which I had no interest in, solely on your recommendation, girlfriday! Sadly Park Shi-hoo hasn't shown up yet, so I have no opinion of him so far. I'll see if you were right about him ;)

He was the lead character in Family's honor before Prosecutor Princess. Family's honor did very well in ratings and launched his name. It is perhaps his best work yet. I personally didn't think Prosecutor Princess was a good drama. I felt that the script had a lot to be desired.
I expected so little from Queen of Reversal at First. But it was fascinating to watch how PSH started out as the second lead, then in the mid way, the show became his. It was such a nice surprise.

i agree with you, i fell in love with him because of Family Honor. that drama is amazing and Park is just phenomenal in that drama. For me its his best work so far. i cant wait to see more of him. i also loved his transition in QOR, from second lead to the center character, i did not even want to see the husband character on the screen, it was give me more PSH.

So in the lull of dramas ending and unable to finding a substitute, I might turn to Queen of Reversals....... Personally, I loved him in Prosecutor Princess. Actually, I should get on finishing Family's Honor (I'm only on, what, like episode 3 or 4 but then I got busy and never got back to it... plus it has Lee Hyunjin, who is so freaking cuteee).
His charm is definitely in his charisma. For sure. No doubt. But from him, I'd like to see him in a new role. He's always the.. rich chaebol dude. When is he not that? I want to see him in a different setting/role.

If he were a tub of icecream, he'd be vanilla with choc chips. Vanilla for his complexion, and choc for his remoteness.....he's someone I can't read......unlike, say, Lee Min Ho, who's open and seems such a nice guy. But PSH is closed....adds to his charm.

When girlfriday says that you don't really see it until you watch him act, she is right on. While watching both Prosecutor Princess and Queen of Reversals, both times he grew and grew on me until I thought he was the sexiest thing walking. I wanted him to kiss me like he kisses his leading ladies. ;-) There's just something about him. And that top picture up there? ...lovely.

I'm not totally in love with him yet, but he's growing on me. He's probably the only reason why I stuck with QoR till the end. Currently catching up on Family Honor but he isn't as emotive here.
Another thing, this guy is aging so well. Something tells me this man is going to look 25 when he reaches 50. No fair.

I like him a lot but QoR's leading actress puts me off. She looks like his auntie. I can't watch him act with an older woman. I just can't. Now, for his next drama, it'd be perfect if they cast KTH opposite him. SSH fans will consider this betrayal but I think PSH and KTH would have amazing chemistry. I've watched every one of his dramas....except Queen. I....just....can't.

I agree with you about PSH pairing with KTH for his next drama. It's not a betrayal to SSH as it's only acting! I got hooked to him while watching Family Honor and was crazy over him in PP. I refused to watch QoR because like you, the female lead didn't appeal to me. I am very particular about who my favourite actor acts with. I would rather wait and watch for another of his drama with a better female lead.

Kim Nam Joo is really pretty. It just her horrible hairstyle who make her looks older. If Only she changed her hairstyle when she could looks younger...
Although I admit II couldn't looking at them as a pairing in QoR. :(

He is one of my favorite actors, I love him!! He was great in Prosecutor Princess, but the role I'll always remember him from is Shi Hoo in Iljimae. I'm still hunted by his sad eyes, and the longing looks he sent to Eun Chae, made me DIE!

I was on holiday so I started watching Prosecutor Princess, all 7 eps in one day, and I went to bed but I couldn't!! Lawyer Seo In/ PSH haunted me that I was thrashing on my bed and after an hour I gave up and continued watching till morning.
Regardless what ppl say about PP, I'd watch it again for HIM. Heck, I even watch QOR for him.. <3

Love him in Family's Honor, Iljimae and Prosecutor Princess! I've watched QoR just for Park Si-hoo and I'm happy to see that his acting has improved and matured !!!

Would be interesting to see him in a vampire role…he´s so hilarious in his interviews…but he can do all he wants, he can seduce us with all of his roles
And of course he loves sunglasses…and I love him more with sunglasses.
I watch all of his dramas and he can hipnotize me in all of them, and becomes more and more good actor with the pass of time

totally agree! I remember first seeing him in "What Planet Are You From" and then again in other works, but he wasn't memorable until Prosecutor Princess.
Nice interview...he seems like a really low-key kind of guy. But really, boy, you need to get a tan. He's so pale sometimes that it scares me....then again that does make him the perfect fit for a vampire role hahaha.

OMG Love his nickname. He is not really that handsome, because their are other actors that are alot more handsome. But I think he has alot of charisma, and I think it shows through in his acting. I love his smile: it make you happy. I love to see him as a vampire. Bite me!
