MBC cuts another drama short, angers people
by javabeans
I have not followed the drama Stormy Lovers, but I admit my interest is piqued by the latest news that the MBC drama is being cancelled, cut short by more than half its run due to low ratings.
Stormy Lovers is a daily drama, which means it airs Monday Through Friday (in the 8 pm hour). In my wholly unscientific recollection of past daily dramas, because of the steady dinnertime audience, it’s not unusual for dailies to pull in 30%+ ratings, and sometimes even 40%+. (Examples: You’re My Destiny, Everybody Cha Cha Cha, Smile Donghae.) So it’s disappointing that Stormy Lovers has been resting in the 5% to 8% range. Even if I recall reading quite a bit of criticism about the bad acting of lead actress Choi Eun-seo (of Personal Taste, in her first leading role).
Still, it seems a bit harsh to cut the drama down from 120 planned episodes to 50. The move — call it cancellation, call it curtailment — is also a particularly rare circumstance for a daily show. There have been cases of miniseries being cut short, but even then it’s usually only by a few episodes; Bad Guy went from 20 to 17, Strike Love and Tamra the Island from 20 to 16, and Ja Myung Go from 50 to 39.
Scriptwriter Na Yeon-sook has spoken out harshly against the move, saying that the cut is wrong and unreasonable. She added, “The broadcast station’s tyranny has caused this supremacy of the viewership ratings. I cannot understand cutting a drama as though it were a radish.”
You may recognize Na’s name after she kicked up quite a fuss (to put it mildly) over being cut from her previous drama, East of Eden. She added the (somewhat ironic, given the resumé?) comment that “If a drama has high ratings, the station protects it no matter how makjang it is, but if ratings are low, they just hack it up, which infuriates me.”
One veteran actor in the drama’s cast said, “These days MBC is continually losing to its competitors. I believe they are reacting with too quick a temper after their attempt to reverse the situation with star writers and actors has failed.”
A rep from MBC merely stated that this decision came after internal discussion, and that they will approach the handling of actors’ and producers’ contract stipulations accordingly.
This means that Stormy Lovers, which today aired its 36th episode, will only run till the end of this month. It stars Choi Eun-seo, Lee Jae-yoon, Jung Bo-seok, Sohn Chang-min, Choi Myung-gil, Jung Chan, Shim Hye-jin, Hwanhee, Kim Min-ja, and Cha Soo-yeon.

I wanna smack MBC's CEO...
my message to him:
"Bitch ....
Please"
MBC is losing it, and I sorta agree with NYS, I mean....why so harsh on a daily drama? Stormy Lovers was suppose to be very makjang but it's a bit far from that. Those of you that are watching it will definitely notice that NYS's writing has altered and been more mellow/subtle emotions.

Poor Jung Bo Seok. He's such a great actor and to come off of his awesome performance in the equally awesome Giant with a show that gets cut just sucks! That really stinks for EVERYONE involved. I'm glad I don't really watch any MBC shows if this is the way they are going to treat their workers and audience!!

MTE.
But at the same time, if no one watches MBC for that reason, then we can expect MORE cuts due to less ratings.
MBC should give everyone a break and at least cut the drama into a reasonable amount, if they have to.

I suppose the best thing to do is to stop making these dramas so long. Start slowly in the number of episodes, then gradually give extensions.

that is horrible. it's almost a third into its run and now it's cut by half?! the storylines for the respective characters have just started gathering steam, i can't imagine how they're going to be wrapped up properly. i have been watching some hwanhee cuts and have quite enjoyed them so far, but this setback really hurts the whole cast and those who have been following the drama.

MBC pissed me off with Strike Love being cut leaving that crappy open ending.
Luckily, I've managed to find 22 episodes long version for Fuji TV with proper finale similar to that in manhwa and 80's movie.
Fuji TV now shows fourth or fifth complete series rerun.

Not really, but I've talked with people from one of the subbing groups, and they agreed to make subs as one of their 'secret project' especially for donators. So even if they finally make subtitles, they won't release them for outsiders. Dunno if I really can tell their name, so lets say that they've made subs for original series. :P

i haven"t watch stormy lovers but i watched the first 30 episodes of Smile donghae and it was bearable but i droped it because i had a problem with the leading lady Jung Ah i think(i know her as an ex member of Jewelry). she is good at being the meanie but expect for this, she is emontionless and expressionless.
Moreover the show became boring for me because it was bizare to watch. i just could'nt undersand why we had to wait 20 episodes in order for the drama to ''really'' begin??? but then i just remember about temptation of wife wich took 29 episodes or 30 to begin !!!!!!
i just wanted to say that it is really painful for one to see his/her work being ruined because of people's opinion. when you hire a writter for a drama you know that there are two possibilities 1) people love it and great ratings 2) people don't really like it and ratings are so-so. but at least this is someone's job and they have to let her finish it because it's mean to cut the drama from 20 to 16 but it worst to cut it from 120 to 50!!!!

This move looks to me like someone trying to save themselves from dieing of bloodloss from a wound in the arm by cutting the whole arm off. Yes, its pretty pathetic when a daily drama pulls <10% ratings since they generally have to not epic fail to pull in ratings that any minidrama would love to have, but the move feels like overkill. I would have predicted PD/write swap long before 70 episode cancellation of a drama that had only gone 1/3 through its expected run.
MBC isn't exactly pulling in the best rep lately, so I don't know if they some overall redemption plan, but its getting hard to be invested in any of their dramas without a massive grain of salt in the back of your head going "is this drama going to suffer from executive hack and slash in the future?"
Oh well, there's been worse. Firefly... oh how the wounds still burn...

You are right networks everywhere cut some really good, high quality shows all of the time for example ABC cut "The Whole Truth" this season yet still airs the freaking Bachelor. Firefly was a huge loss, who does not like space cowboys.
Maybe, MBC just needs to suck it up when they have a drama that is not performing it is not as if these shows last for more than 16, 20 or 120 episodes. I really think someone is trying to save their job by cutting under performing shows when they should have been trying to figure out how to fix the show's problems. I just think that would have been more cost effective in the long run, but hey what do I know.

Totally agree with you. A hack is always a bad sign to viewers that the production company has no faith in the show.
Perhaps changing or including new directors or writers could improve the pace of the show but alas, 'Off with its head!'

Honestly, if it sucks, pull it. If it's good, extend it or keep it as is. Common sense if you ask me. Why invest in something that's not giving you much profit when you could be raking in more dough? Sadly, that's just how it works.

then MBC should stop buying dramas!? I mean...why take the risk and ruin other people's production? it's not like SBS can buy the rest and air it....these things don't happen. The fact is that when a broadcaster cuts a drama, they basically KILL it. If I was NYS I would never trust MBC after what happened to her even though she was also at fault. She belongs on SBS LOL.
It might be very realistic to pull the plug but we're staying on the page where MBC is loosing its rep by repeating these actions EVERY SEASON!

I actually started watching it because it was hols and I felt the need to get ~into~ a daily. The storylines dragged, yes, but some characters were very enjoyable to watch. I felt like the storyline would've had a better pace had the announced the cut A LOT SOONER. But, now as the storylines are finally gathering some substance, they're shortening what could have had potential.
Granted, the drama was doomed from the start. A stellar cast like this not getting ratings is a shame in itself. But it had some great performances (Hwanhee, if people are interested, was a pariticularly interesting character. I hope he trys out a mainstream drama soon...)

whittling the drama down to 40% of its planned episodes is pretty insulting. I know MBC has to cut its losses, but at least be considerate and let the drama leave with some pride. Did they really have to cut THAT many episodes? And won't the pacing be really off now since they had already shown like 30+ episodes already to set things up and now they have to prepare to wrap things up.
Maybe MBC should focus on showing short series that are only like 4-12 episodes long?
I think doing something like this may turn away writers and directors who don't want to come into work with the mindset that it is very likely that MBC will jump ship once the going gets tough. SBS and KBS will then get all the talented people.

I'm actually disappointed that MBC has decided to cut it short, which is very rare for a mon.-fri. drama. this is an interesting story because the lead isn't your ordinary damsel in distress. I was immediately hooked in the drama since it started airing here in L.A. a couple of weeks ago. The story is interesting, but it has yet to show any real progress within the character. its bad enough that its only 30 mins. every night, then they have to cut the whole episodes in half. damn it...and its just getting good too!

Am not watching this but saw the list of the supporting cast and that's a lot of talented veteran actors...can't say I'm surprised though. MBC has gotten notorious for cutting shows that don't bring in the ratings lately. Yikes though...from 120 to 50---that's a steep cut.

I think the drama had better potential had it not been a daily drama. It had too many characters/storylines to focus on. And to cram that much in a 35min timeslot doesn't really work, even if it is aired 5 days a week.

I'm really interested in production companies' reactions to MBC in the moment. Would they trust selling their dramas to MBC? Of course, there's not always the option. If no other channels pick up the drama, then one kind of HAS to go with MBC, but I'm wondering whether the station would become a last-option landfill.

MBC ain't got respect for the vet actors on hand, even when Jung Bo suk cracked open the dye ,weave and stache. Sadly in this tier of game, a Hallyu name on hand is the only thing to keep them from folding ASAP.

I don't like MBC because they like to cut or add (oh yeah I'm talking about you, Queen of Rehearsal) some episodes of drama because some of ridiculous reasons like the rating or the drama that follows next need extra time for production.
What about the storyline, heh MBC!! If I were the scriptwriter, I would feel like somebody has playing a joke with my job, and need some shake on the head. This is an insult for good shake.

sound like they trying to 'have their cake and eat it too'! But all they do in taking such steps is pi#s off what viewers they have by taking off programs that they are following. It must have some viewer rating, but by taking it off or cutting the episodes in half, they not going to get any higher viewer rating from doing that all they do is lose what they do have right now!. To use anther saying a 'bird in the hand.......
And if I happen to be a business that sponsored the show I be more than pi#sed I be calling my lawyers.

I think MBC actually had cut short a daily drama before: 맨발의 청춘 (The Youth in Barefoot). Such high expectations with Be Strong, Geum-soon's strong run. Only 63 episodes. But then, it was in competition with KBS' 별난여자 별난남자 (Bizarre Bunch) starring Kim Ah Joong & Go Joo Won.

It's hard for me to believe that a drama with that much veteran talent could be all bad. It is the ratings, however, that have always been the "whore of Babylon" who drives the suits in their never ending game of monpoly. Though I've seen none of this series, this decision has cost one of my favorites (Shim Hye Jin) a job and possibly a blow to her reputation. This I will never forgive...
