Mary Stayed Out All Night replaces writer
by girlfriday
Looks like drama in K-dramaland. KBS’s Monday-Tuesday drama Mary Stayed Out All Night, starring Jang Geun-seok and Moon Geun-young, has announced the departure of its screenwriter, In Eun-ah (Goong, Love and Marriage, Hon). She’s reportedly left the production of her own accord, and will be replaced by new head writer Go Bong-hwang (18 vs. 29, Nice Girl Baek Il-hong).
The announcement comes on the heels of Mary‘s lowest ratings yet: it dipped down to 5.7% this week, up against heavy hitter Giant‘s finale. While it might be too late to save this sinking ship, perhaps it makes sense that if there was ever a time to make the switch, it’s now. Maybe with Giant gone and some new blood in the writers’ room, the production is hoping against hope for a ratings revival in its last leg.
The changeover was initially suppressed when rumors of on-set discord surfaced, but it’s now been confirmed that writer In Eun-ah has decided to leave. Just how much of that decision was really up to her is of course anybody’s guess. The drama isn’t exactly what you would call well-executed, given the potential it had with its cast. It really kind of pains me to think of how awesome it could have been, if the writing had been sharper. Suffice it to say, I’m not surprised that the writer was blamed, but I AM surprised that they’re risking the change this late in the game. I guess we’ll just have to tune in to see what happens to the story, once the dust settles.
Go Bong-hwang has taken over the script starting with Episode 11, which airs Monday December 13, along with Episode 10.

Lets keep em crossed!! I'm with you!!!! But sucks for the writer I guess. No matter how her decision to leave was made. Once you start on something, it becomes urs. But I hope this new writer don't change the tone and make things complicated. I dread that.

FINALLY!
This should have happened light years ago when the plot was still interesting. It's such a mess, it's like trying to undo a ball of tangled strings. Hopefully the new writer can make the last episodes of this drama memorable.

So Am I second? Muhahah!!
Congrats on being first, but at least make a comment concerning the above post, this "First" is getting older by the day!! : O }
The problem with MSOAN like I mention before, most of the trendy dramas are using the "Open Story Line" format which means the writer only has the skeleton of the story and she/he fills the lines as she goes with no definite commitment to a particular story line, and we see how many dramas have tank just on 2010 because of this format, to many to mention, I can almost guarantee, that this is the death blow for MSOAN, it was cute while it lasted!! Now I do not think the new writer can untied the mess that the old writer left behind!!!!
My best regards to the cast and crew!!!

I am sorry if my dry humor was a bit overboard! : O }
Well is hard to predict since the primary writer has been all over the place with the story line!!
Lets hope that now he/she may have a sense of what the story is really about since this "Kissing" rectangle Mary-go-round is starting to get pretty old, if only the writer give Mary a "backbone" and the second male lead a more solid lines to work with, and the second female lead, make her an "intelligent, independent, career, oriented" girl, not your run of the mill "bitchy, codependent, emo, suicidal girl, the show will be fine otherwise I think is all down hill from here on!!!!!

Why is this open plotline so common in K land? the station won't finance a writer so the writer does not write until commitments are in place? Do GF and JB know? This drives me so crazy! Every other drama ends on a downward curve if it does not downright TANK. When a story meets your satisfaction because it was true to its inner logic its so great and always a better product. Dont the stations care enough about quality to encourage a finished script or do
they want to see how it plays in viewerland first? This show
was a cute idea worth 4 episodes because not much is goin' on except the usual cliches x2! God knows the poor actors are try'in their best but they can only chew the scenery with cuteness so long. Sorry i know I am ranting.

the truth? most shows roll by the ratings. scripts can be deliberately left unfinished / filming starts right away, or scripts get constant revision based on viewer acceptance temperature.
ratings reflect viewer following (now, if they could only include internet following then it would be a trickier computation) so there lies whether the script would be revised or left as it was (if it was written up to the conclusion). otherwise, if viewer following is high, additional episodes are negotiated and then filmed. that's when series are stretched. or get additional seasons.
companies putting their ads on tv look at the ratings per timeslot (and it depends on the strength of the shows in particular slots) - it's like a menu, they choose which ones they'd like their products to be seen. and then each timeslot has a different pricing. usually primetime shows command higher advertising rates.
good ratings = higher advertisement load = yebah! your show gets an extension
lower ratings = lower advertisement load = prepare to dodge the axe of wrath

thanks for your appreciation. :)
I don't know about Korea, but where I am, stations cancel the series altogether after not being able to rate decently - even after just a few episodes. others are moved from one timeslot to another, and sometimes from weekdays to weekends, just to feel and capture the right set of audience if they're not performing in the ratings game. (usu. kids and mothers watch on daytime, teenagers, young adults, and adults during primetime... etc.) replacing writers is one thing. you'd be stark raving mad when they resurrect an already dead, but "selling" character. now imagine them doing that to a character like Mishil. :D

korea the land of the internet..they are left open so they can change plot character and anything else they can think of to fit the feed back and response from internet and other sources. Its why they still make their drama as they write the scripts it also why so many promising K-drama just fade away and the actors seem lost and have no idea what they are suppose to be acting out. Really for a serious actor it must be the most frustrating way of acting anyone could think of.

sigh...Open Story Line?
Why aren't they just using the manhwa source for ideas? There are a few volumes of material. Why create a kdrama citing some an original source and twist it to contain all these kdrama cliches? or is the manhwa just as cliche-filled?
Anyway, I still enjoy Mary and Mu-Gyul. They have some adorable scenes.

Well, maybe this is better for the drama. I honestly lost interest about an episode or 2 ago. I continued to read the recaps (leisurely) and kinda didn't care if I actually watched the episode. With that said I still believe in the actors, just hoping for better script.

I lost interest after episode 2. The recaps are much more fun! :)
Well, I guess it happens to even the best of writers. I loved Goong, but some of it was pretty sub-par, helped along by the strength of its initial premise and its leads' chemistry.
No amount of chemistry has been helping this show. It can only stretch so far. I'll be watching to see if this ship can right itself. I want it to!

i think the only reason Goong worked was because the source material i.e the manga was awsome plus Hwang in Roe was awsome....since Mary isnt sticking to the source its not the same

I had a feeling we were in for some major changes after the last episode. Mostly because there was no episode 10 preview, but even plotwise, it makes sense that they'd try a new writer now. I can only hope that it gets better, not worse, and that the story remains somewhat cohesive.

Now, is it just me or someone else thinks there's a curse for MGY? i actually like her work and her charaters, but somehow the writers mess the stories! i mean, CS created a lot of expectations as MSOAN but went downhill and had an awful ending (btw, i was gonna vote for it, but Bad Guy won for me =S) and now Mary... two flat dramas in a row!!

I sure as heck hope this is a good thing, and not a horrible one. Maybe the production didn't like where the old writer was taking the show (from the ep 10 written preview, it sounded like it was heading right for the Cliffs of Cliche) and they decided to get someone with a little more subtlety.

I sincerely hope that the quality of writing can save this drama because I have fallen in love with the CHARACTERS
mainly and only because of the endearing
Jang Geun Suk and Moon Geun Young

that it is practically CRIMINAL to subject them to such painfully lacklustre writing...

I hated the main actress character in 18 vs. 29 she was the (SECOND) most selfish, stupid female lead I have ever seen in drama. The main actress in "Don't Hesitate" is the reigning champ for that title.
I just hope that they don't continue to make Mary (WEAK) it time she become strong and break away from the father who behavior is not acceptable. She need to become a rocker wife material and stop trying to make the Rocker in to a “Daddy” boy, it would be so great if they focus on her development into a woman worthy of Mu-gul soul and not just his heart and mind.

The actress in Don't Hesitate drove me batty and was the reason I mainly forwarded through the episodes (I can't drop a show once I start it, so I was doomed to watch all 98 episodes).
On the other hand with Mary, it's become one of those shows I watch when I have nothing else to watch, or it runs in the background while I'm "studying" for my finals, which, with such good actors, says something about how interesting it is.

Hi! New reader here. I also love HYD! I think I've rewatched the entire series and movie about three times. There's something about the show that makes you wanna watch it again and again. And the scenes never seem old even when you repeat them.
As for MMM, I'm following the show but it seems pretty dragging. It's not the kind of drama which you would like to watch all over again just because nothing really happens much on each episode. I do love the lead characters, though. And I'm repulsed by the parents. AIGOO! I just hope the new writer could do the job. This show really needs some saving. ;)

it depends on whom the story concept belongs to: the producer or the writer/s. and on the terms of the production contract.
I'm not sure if producers can do such a thing to the likes of the Hong sisters - not that their writing style s*cks or can s*ck.
replacing writer/s is a very risky thing for a drama that's halfway through. it would be very difficult for the replacement writer to pick the pieces up after the last one. I'm wondering if there ever was a proper turnover of tasks between the two, and how it happened.

I had this drama on my anticipated watch list, but the stills and the 1st recap killed it for me....I saw NOTHING of what I envisioned in my mind's eye what the drama could produce....
These actors are not nearly as s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d as they SHOULD be professionally, and that is disappointing.
Unfortunate, because there was HIGH hopes for this one but it sunk it before my eyes little by little before it began and then with the 1st epi.....

I'm totally agree with you.
MSOAN was on my watch-list but this drama is just another huge disappointment for me. I'm still calculating which one was and is a big disappointment; MSOAN or CS (yeah, I'm still bitter about that. can't help it)?
I love MGY, I truly do. But even she can't make me to watch MSOAN. Gah, what a waste.
JGS and MGS. Adorable couple on screen with not-so-adorable script. *sigh*......
Off topic but somehow related.
Now I am afraid what will happen to second drama on my watch-list which will air next week; Athena. And same like MSOAN, I was excited about Athena but better be prepare for the worst. Not so optimistic, am I?
Well I think it is better than if I gulp another BIG BIG BIG disappointment latter on.

I hope this change is for the better! As much as I adore M&M and savour all their moments together, I can't deny that I'm getting tired of the pace and characterisation. The cast deserves a better chance to work their potential.

I don't deny that the drama hasn't been spectacular and while I've been watching both Secret Garden and Mary, I feel like Secret Garden has been really boring of late--- the body swap was fun for an episode but it started to get stale. I'm probably the only person who finds it kind of overrated.
Whereas I felt like with Mary, it really picked up from Episode 7 and I loved 8 and 9. I really wished there was more support for this drama though.

Hi, Natalie!! ;)
I think i am the only other person who agrees with you that for me MSOAN has been more interesting since eps 8 and 9...hehe ;)
but i have not been won over by the Secret Garden camp because i have never liked the body swapping part to begin with...

You are not the only person who finds the body swap thing overrated. I have always hated the body swap story line: I hated it in Buffy, I hated it in Smallville, and now that there is a whole series dedicated to it... I liked the story before the body swap, and I knew it was going there, but once it happened I was just like... meh.
I love Mary, even though I know why it's getting low ratings: it honestly deserves it. I like silliness, which this show has in spades, but the majority of the viewing public needs a more intense plot. Or A plot. In this case, half a plot would probably make them happy. I adore the characters, but that's all anyone can honestly say about this show. I'll be interested to see what the new writer can come up with.... and I kinda wish they would have switched earlier.

I actually was more interested in the story before the body swap, now with the weird ending of the latest episode, it just seems gimmicky! I mean, it was fun while it lasted but with that ending, the whole idea seems a little cheap.
I love Mary a lot too, I love the main 3 a lot, still not sure about Seo Joon/Hyo Jin. I love it for all its silliness and flaws, and the dialogues from the recent eps have been really strong imo, but i wished it'd been more over the top what with two contract marriages and everything, which might have then kept the viewers interests. I think it deserves the low ratings, but the latest ratings were seriously bad! I expected at least a dedicated fanbase, since its really popular on the internet (although we know that doesn't count for anything)

Me too.Other than the few laughs, the body swap was pointless. I wish they dug deeper into it. It annoys me to see Binnie making Ga-rim into a stereotype female. They should have left out the bodyswapping. It was really interesting before the swap.

yes, Natalie! i agree with u that with star power in Jang Geun Suk and Moon Geun Young, the drama should have a stronger fanbase than what it has been getting...
i have never been a 'dedicated' fan of both actors but i have always liked their acting because of their impressive acting talent and that is why i have been watching it and now i am so hoping the writer can make the immensely talented actors worth their while being in this drama... ;)

am i glad to know i have someone else other than natalie who thinks the same way as i do about the body swapping thing... ;)
and i agree with you about MSOAN...
we ALL love SOME silliness in the dramas that we watch BUT it only goes so far before we go bonkers with boredom...
thus, you are so right, brookeve, about the drama needing a SOLID plot, before it really becomes a TITANIC flop...
i was ruminating about the plot so far...
perhaps the writer can expand on
the wayward-can't-commit-rocker-becoming-dependably-honest-man plot line
plus the back story on Jung In not wanting to remember what happened when he was 8 has something to do with Mary's dad???

looking back at the pre-pilot episode photos of MSOAN, Jung In pretty much looked indie band material. (nothing about the short shorts, the hair, the boots and the leggings screamed "businessman") i wonder what that's for. is he supposed to seriously join the band? what of his injured hand?

EXACTLY, izzie!!! my sentiments exactly but i forgot to mention it...
what IS with Jung In's injured fingers connected with the guitar?
what happened to him that he hurt himself so badly?
hmmm....
bjharm
December 10, 2010 at 8:22 PM
his hand was explained as self inflicted due to depression. His father told him to stop playing so he did, but he loved it so much he couldn't handle it. Actually they put some nice points up in the drama. Depression affecting a 'star' due to anti fan attack and the effect it could have and now again depression with family pressure, both pretty ongoing 'issues' in Korea.

December 10, 2010 at 9:18 PM
thanks so much, bjharm, for your kind reply!! ;)
i did see it in the drama that he was self-mutilating out of sheer frustration and helplessness...
but i wonder if there is more to the story about his father not wanting the son to be a musician than simply the explanation given...
and i totally agree with you abt the issues in the drama being relevant and current as reflected in the media abt the lives of the people in the cut-throat and less-than-rosy entertainment industry...

Changing the writer now? Interesting. I still think there is hope to switch things around. It's not like there are only 2 episodes left. Anything can happen in 6 episodes.
I personally don't think the drama has been flat but then again i wasn't really expecting too much so I find it enjoyable. So i think switching writers might be just what it needs.

a change this late? now, im actually looking forward to watch the show after the first few eps.. the pacing and the (lack of) logic really put me off. but i love the cast so much, i just watch the show for them. though i find myself tending to multi-task while the show plays in the background.

i'm also surprised that the writer was the one for goong - and now comparing the two differences, what happened to the inspiration of the writer?!
i agree there wasn't any logic but
how much logic is there in dramas to begin with? lol.
hope that the new writer will "save" the drama and give audience a second chance to change their opinion about this!

what's not to lose if they change the writer now anyway they are already at their lowest. could probably save er improve the show even.
honestly i've switched to watching secret garden when it aired and just keeping tabs on MSOAN thru the recaps here.
the main couple are cute..indeed yes but i don't see them act more like adults and even more because the story says they basically raised themselves on their own.

well, i'm hoping the script gets better cos i'm definitely sticking around as I love MR and MG.
Sorry to say this but a gentle suggestion to those who do not watch this show but ONLY read the recaps;
Perhaps you should actually WATCH the show before repeatedly criticising it. Just becos so-and-so reviewer thinks a particular drama is not good may not mean that YOU will not enjoy it.. After all, a reviewer's opinion is only that.. their PERSONAL opinion; coloured by their own experiences, likes and dislikes, not necessarily a yardstick to measure a drama's worth of your time..
and if you have watched it and dislike it so much.. why are you still wasting your precious time slamming it?

LOL @ your "gentle" but words in caps. And I hope the "H" in your JMHO meant "honest" and not "humble." :)
Anyway, I fall in neither of your categories: slamming but ONLY reading recaps, or watching but disliking it SO MUCH. It wasn't a direct hit on me, but I felt side-swept so I will waste my precious time on this. I watched episodes of the show, got bored and resorted to reading recaps for the last two episodes instead of giving it up altogether - I'm giving the show a chance. And I'm not relying on the recapper's opinion, for although they express their minds on what they write, I don't always agree with them. Anyway, those are recaps mixed with reviews and not solely reviews. I can ignore the opinions if I want to.
But lemme say that when people are displeased with something that they have put their faith into, they can and will express their disappointment. After all, their (our) precious time were wasted getting something they (we) didn't expect - in a negative way.
If you want to defend MSOAN, you have every right to. But I hope you would try to point out its redeeming qualities to prove the slammers wrong rather than question others' motives for expressing their displeasure. Me, I appreciate the way that the actors deliver the characters and that's a positive side of the show that I see. Unfortunately, I can't find anything else to keep watching the airing episodes. But I'm still hoping that the story make a turn at the right corner cuz I'm a JGS fan, and I find MGY a good actress too. It would be a waste of their talents, time and effort if the show stays on it disappointing tracks.
Just my honest opinion.

Finally, someone says it! I love Javabeans and Girlfriday to death, but I know that they're recaps and reviews are their own interpretation of the show, rather than biblical truth.
I admit, I was one of those who blindly followed the recaps and shied away from kdramas that they thought were bad. One example was Take Care of the Young Lady. But when I watched it recently, it was actually quite good! I was so frustrated with myself for passing judgment on a show based on what someone else said.
Seeing that JB and GF are intelligent and insightful writers, I'm sure they themselves would encourage independent and critical thinking in their readers.
PS: I gotta disagree though, MSOAN is really bad. As boring as Goong was, in my book.

I gave up on the episode 4. Now I'm just watching the previews and skimming through the recaps. I really like KJW and MGY, but their character are sooooo annoying. She is constantly whining and pouting and he is just expressionless. Argh.
JGS, surprisingly, doesn't do much for me. Loved him in Hong Gil Dong, but that's about it.

Glad that it'll have a new hope for the new writer. I won't hope for better rating, but a better story. Because this drama already got sold to a lot of countries, at very least can make a new group of viewers to enjoy and not embarrass JKS, MGY, KJW and the rest of the casts. I still hope for good critics and abuzz. hope it'll save actors' skills and faces. I love them much and wanna enjoy the show without sigh and dissapoinment almost at the end of every episodes.

just to add to my previous comment on #41
just to make it clear..
i did watch the show.. still watch it until now..
"when i say love the drama so much without seeing it.."
it actually mean i loved it way before the drama aired..
when it finally aired i watched it but episode after episode,,it keep disappointing me..
and i don't think that it's wrong to express that i don't like it..
it's a common sense for people to express their opinion when they like something or dis-like something..
and if i watched it and don't like it of course i will say so...
i'm not gonna waste my time to express anything only if i didn't watch the drama or i'm feeling so-so..
just sayin'
