Jang Geun-seok sings on Mary OST

It’s no surprise that Jang Geun-seok will be contributing to the OST of his new drama Mary Stayed Out All Night, since he’s sung for multiple roles in the past. Most notably, he sung several tracks for You’re Beautiful as the leader of its pop-idol band A.N.Jell.

What IS a surprise is the perplexing title of his first song, which was just released today (listen below): “‘부탁해, My Bus!” which translates roughly to… “Please, My Bus” or “I Leave My Bus In Your Care.”

The question then becomes: In what the hell kinda context does that make sense anyway?

Girlfriday: I know! He’s late for band rehearsal and needs the bus to come on time.
Javabeans: Or maybe he’s leaving his precious babies instruments on the bus and is begging it to take care of them.
Girlfriday: What kind of so-called genius musician leaves his instruments on the bus?
Javabeans: The kind who is just popping out for a quickie fake-marriage ceremony while his buddies set up the concert?
Girlfriday: What if it’s like Speed and he’s driving the bus with a bomb on it, and he’s sweet-talking the bus to please take care, my life is in your hands. Hey, it could happen.
Javabeans: Is Keanu on that bus? ‘Cause maybe then he’s saying please, Keanu, take care of my bus.
Girlfriday: Maybe he’s being detained, and he’s begging them to let him go, because his bus is here.
Javabeans: You mean like, “Please, don’t you see! It’s my bus!”
Girlfriday: But with an Oliver Twist accent: “Please, suh, I must catch me bus!”
Javabeans: Okay, you’re losing it. Maybe the lyrics will help!

The lyrics:

부탁해, My Bus!

Like crazy Just Run, Run, Run, Running, Go, Go 부탁해, My Bus! To the Stage.
My Heart is Beat, Beat, Beat, Beating. Boom, Boom.
심장까지 들려오는 Hurricane Sound
높이 Jump, Jump, Jump, 파란 하늘 위로
멀리 Quick, Quick, Quick 달려가는거야, Start! You and I

날이 선 머리끝, 흐린 Telepathy, 날 조이는 꿈, Im crazy now
달콤한 Jasmine 향, 또 반복되는 Stress, I want to be free
꿈의 Paradise! OH~ 그 곳으로 갈테야 My friend
Dont think Just run! OH~ 꿈꾸는 나의 바다로
Like crazy Just Run, Run, Run, Running, Go, Go 부탁해, My Bus! To the Stage.

My Heart is Beat, Beat, Beat, Beating. Boom, Boom.
심장까지 들려오는 Hurricane Sound
높이 Jump, Jump, Jump, 파란 하늘 위로
멀리 Quick, Quick, Quick 달려가는거야, Start! You and I
Never to fall down!
지독한 연기, 늘 멍한 Television, 날 깨우는 Noise, Im tired now.

쓰디쓴 혀끝과 또 꿈틀대는 Strain, I want to be free.
꿈의 Blue Sky! OH~ 그곳으로 갈테야 My friend
새처럼 Fly to the sky, 너의 날개를 타고
Like crazy Just Run, Run, Run, Running, Go, Go 부탁해 My Bus! To the Stage.

My Heart is Beat, Beat, Beat, Beating. Boom, Boom.
심장까지 들려오는 Hurricane Sound
높이 Jump, Jump, Jump, 파란 하늘 위로
멀리 Quick, Quick, Quick 달려가는거야, Just Run, Run, Run!
Never to fall down!
부탁해, My Bus!
Never to fall down!
부탁해, My Bus!

Javabeans: Uh… maybe not.
Girlfriday: I like our version better.

I think the songs he sang for You're Beautiful are better.

This is dizzying.

...

Clearly, he needs to get on stage on time for the concert, and so he's urging the bus to go faster, after having run like crazy to catch it.

Errrr...

(Jasmine? Telepathy? I... look, he's an ARTIST. They don't have to make sense!!!)

I loved ur last line: "They are artists, they don't have to make sense" lol

may be there is a hidden context?.. or its just a song..

I like his voice.

Michael Stipe and Stephen Malkmus concur with this remark.

daw Stephen Malkmus. Come on man, at least 'Do not feed the oyster' clearly conveys what he wants the listener to do (or not do).

"Do not feed the oyster
Under a cloud
He'll suck you like a seagull into the so-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound
Under a cloud
Do not feed the oysters
Under the grou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound
Under the grou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound
Underground"

That oyster is clearly evil, and should not be fed. 'Stay away from oysters under clouds or ground', it is a legitimate warning that I adhere to daily. Practical advice delivered in a calming and non-threatening way.

This song, on the other hand, leaves you all open and angsty about the bus - you don't even know who or where the bus is, let alone what you're supposed to do with it. It leaves me very confused and anxious and all the BOOM BOOMing frightens me. =/

"it is a legitimate warning that I adhere to daily. Practical advice delivered in a calming and non-threatening way."

"Do not feed the oyster" is in fact a reference to Blue Oyster Cult, as he implored fellow hipsters to not only not fear the reaper, but not feed classic rock's voracious appetite for cannibalistic regard. It's as obvious as this bid for hipster cred. Now excuse me while I order a PBR. I only drink PBR.

LMAO!!!

You made my day.

I like you say "they don't have to make sense" :D
Actually, I think he's acting an indie artist life, who lives randomly and freely and doesn't care if anything makes senses. I like this idea! I like to live with that free spirit!
A bus is something that not belongs to you but you can use it everyday, something you can rely or not rely on, something take you travel everywhere, but nowhere,....something you always see in nomandic life. Don't think, just run, but the destination is to the stage where he can sings, show emotions, be crazy and free, be with friends and people,...sometimes it is tired and he wants to rest to love and live a normal peaceful life but that's not going to be like that, he was born to be free....There's going to be a fight between love and freedom :D
Am I too obsessed with this crazy addictive song?

I like your interpretation a lot. To take it further, maybe the "bus" is his symbol of freedom, going to "his dream by the sea" but instead of taking it, he rushes to the stage, full of excitement, noise and chaos.
Anyways, I love the rock sound, very different than other songs that he sung in the past. I really like this song too, am looking forward to the drama.
JGS has a great voice and great charisma that adds to any role he does! Love my sukkie! :)

Me too, I like the rock sound. Great voice!
In YAB, the songs are really good and emotional and I also like them. But this song is just AWESOME. Makes you confused, this is his inner conflict of peaceful love and crazy freedom.Since I have so much feelings about this song,I can not even find more words to describe...:D JUST TOTALLY LOVE THE SONG AND JANG GEUN SUK.

Totally agree with you!

Yeah I really liked all the songs he sang, in YAB and DOREMIFASOLSIDO, I have yet to see Beethoven's virus. I think that if he would release a music album it would do well, besides his popularity, but he has the talent to back it up.
I also love the songs he did for his cfs, black engine and just drag, etc. He's very versatile, not to mention so yummy! =P

0

Wow, in Bethoven Virus he was even unpassable singer with "Can you hear me?". Agree with you, he should have his own album even he is not going to be a singer (I like him more being an actor) :D

I have no idea that there are genre restrictions for being indie! Please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought being indie means you're independent and are not in contract with any recording label. Hence, you are free to play whatever you want to play! ;)

Uh.. not exactly.. There are lots of artists and bands who do indie music.

There's indie rock. There's indie pop. There's indie. A lot of fusion.

Joy Williams: Speaking a Dead Language. That's indie.

Indie pop. Under My Bed by Meiko.

I meant that there are lots of artists and bands who are signed to labels and they do indie.

You're right, in the sense that the music composed is free from external constraints.

They may or may not be signed to labels.

I have a feeling one day, indie songs will be popular. They are already popular, it just hasn't peaked yet.

I love how you mentioned Joy Williams! I love her and she's so incredibly talented, and terribly underrated.

This song to me seems like silly fun.
Perhaps the drama will start and JGS's heart will beat, beat, beat, he'll jump, jump, jump, have telepathic thoughts, and smell like sweet Jasmine and all will be well in the world of "Please, my bus."

Okay???? Here's my take, he has the bus version of "The Love Bug aka Herbie" but its female therefore he's singing about the "The Love Bus aka Jasmine". Its possible they could have an inappropriate relationship or they could just be running away together to the stage under very inclement wheather...

I am pleasantly surprise!

I feel he is better at singing this kind of music rather than the pop sounds of "You are Beautiful", the music kinda reminds me of the late "Britt Pop Rock" from the early mid 90's. I really dislike K Pop Idols, but if he recorded a whole album with this kind of vibe I will definitely will buy it, all I can say is that if this and indicator of the Drama OST, is sounds like is going to be very, very Good!!!!!

Yeah, if I'm EXTREMELY generous, it sounds a bit like the Manic Street Preachers during Gold Against the Soul. Minus the bleeding or the mascara. Jang Geun Suk . . . as RICHEY?!!!??

To my ears though, it sounds more like a Hyde b-side. JGS can't help but indulge his inner Luraku. Kind of a shame they didn't let him do full on V-Ki. YOUKNOWHEWANTSTO ;)

Might I also take a moment to point out some of the odder lyrics (in Korean) that continue to make no sense?:

"Fly like a bird, fly to the sky, so I can ride your wings"

"Jump high, jump, jump, toward the blue sky"

"The blue sky of my dreams! OH~ I'll go to that place, my friend"

Are we to anticipate the follow-up smash single, "And Also, Please, My Plane"?

@JB

I sense a theme here with nonsensical lyrics - it appears to primarily involve movement and/or modes of transportation - jumping, riding, flying, buses, wings.....

Which leads me to insist that a K-remake of Yellow Submarine in the Mary OST is mandatory. But your plane song would tickle me with glee as well, and I request that Kim Jae Wook sing it in his her purrr-worthy Japanese. JGS is a poor singer, so he can't afford a plane. But Chaebol KJW would totally have a private jet, and when he's off fighting for and pretending to be married to MGY, he will need someone to stroke his plane.

Mary will end up being a love triangle between a woman, a bus, and a plane.

And both guys are so beautiful they'd end up ditching the homeless urchin and jetting off to Majorca on the plane carrying a bus.

0

Boy love FTW. SUJU has made Korea ready ;)

0

I just snorted ramen out my nose and it's all your fault for that mental image.

0

@ockoala

What are the odds of the two of us ending up shipping the boys as OTP?

0

@ Sere

The odds are 30 billion to one - that we two will ship smirky and pouty with each other.

It's slighter higher odds than MGY losing herself in her hair.

0

@ockoala

And you may be right about that. LOL So, important question of the night: are smirky and pouty the new moony and yummy? I hope so.

and OMG LOLing forever at that thing you said about her hair.

Hey it's a marriage of convenience right? ;)

0

oof! If this goes on the drama will have to be aired at midnight! 18++

From the looks of it MGY will be a secondary character.
Hey, that's why it's Mary STAYS OUT all night.

O' poor Mary! She didn't see it coming, did she?

0

you guys, I have no words now. *dies laughing*

0

"Hey, that’s why it’s Mary STAYS OUT all night."

Mary probably facebooks all night, while her two guys play with their guitars. Hee hee

She probably shoots both men at the end of the drama. That'll reinvent MGY's image!

"I think JGS is clearly IN LOVE with his bus"

JGS missed the bus. JGS missed the bus. And that's something he'll neva eva eva do again!

I just found this translated quote of JGS regarding his songs (he sings three) in the Mary OST:

"Two of the three OST songs includes Request and My Bus! These two songs will portray Jang Geun Suk’s drama character as a rocker who dreams of creating band music and illustrates his inner psychological conflicts.
"

So the bus song is about his inner conflict? I thought he was just late for a show and running to his bus? Oh, I give up trying to deconstruct this drama anymore. :-P

this just proves the theory about his love for the bus.
he has an inner conflict whether to choose the girl or the bus.

the girl would be the save choice BUT "my heart is beat beat beating for you bus..."

poor MGY the bus stole the main role

Here's what the American Idol judges would say:
Paula:

*claps hands like a small child* I loved it! You, first of all, are adorable, and the song is really, you know, rock. In a different way. And, you know, you look stunning! And you can sing! *sips mysterious "Coke" cup* (who else thinks it's booze?)

Randy:

You know, I liked it. You weren't pitchy in spots, and it was rock without being contemporary rock. You played it a little safe, would have liked to see you go out of your comfort zone a little. But it was good, dog, it was good.

Simon:

Well, I mean, for starters, your outfit was ridiculous. Are you a guy or a girl? And is that...*squints in disbelief* is that eye-liner? Your hair. It's just too long. And curly. Really, you have to do something about that. Americans, Americans are not gender confused, okay?
As for the song, one half made no sense and the other half is in Korean. What else am I supposed to say?"

Randy breaks in: "No, dog. I got the meaning. It's like this guy is used to being an Indie singer with no home. He's used to traveling these roads with his nomadic kinda life-style: represented by this bus. But now his dreams are taking a different turn because of this girl or something and he can no longer live this life. The lyrics represent a kind of confusion as everything changes around him. I like that, I respect that, dog."

Simon: "That's bull."

That, in a nutshell, is what the AM judges would say. Though Randy would never go on that speal. English class has taught me to find meaning where there might not be one, so that is now what I do best...I think it could viably make sense. Though this hilariousness about the bus, plane, and MG love triangle is amazingly funny :)

Unfortunately, I don't know Korean, so I have no idea what the lyrics are actually saying. If someone could translate them (PLEASE!!!) I might be able to pull some English class BS out of it ;)

Haha. I don't know Ellen that well, but I can try Kara:

"You *pause* were great. I love the *waves hands dramatically* feel in your voice, that emotion. *pauses as though what she's saying is really important* That's really hard to do." *looks around at other judges.* Randy and Paula are nodding. Satisfied that she has the exact same opinion as everyone else, she sits back, finished.

Is anyone starting to fear the outcome of this drama? I'm trying to remain optimistic with the stella cast and all - but the fear started to set in when i saw that "GOD AWFUL" erm video ad or whatever and now this plain weird song.....please don't disappoint me.

Actually dispite not knowing what the hell he's going on about, this song has an addictive quality about it - although, can't imagine me actually buying it or anything....MARY FIGHTING!!!....please

I am. I am slowly getting more and more concerned about the quality of the drama's writing. I'm not worried about the actors, though. I'm just scared that the acting will be carrying through the whole thing. But actors like that wouldn't pick a crappy script, right????

if you don't care the lyrics like me (as a non-Korean), the melody is OK!
also, I'm really looking forward to 2 dramas in these days. one is Secret Garden and the other one is that!
I'm excited^^

Haha! You guys probably saved me a good hour listening to the song on repeat trying to figure out what the hell he was saying in English. I like the song though. A lot of people seem to be mistaken about the connotations of the word "indie". If the idea is that JGS's band is recording stuff independently, then they're indie. They can have any sound they want.
Oh, and his accent when singing is so adorable!

For reals?

Oh, wait, yes, I see the inner conflict here - JGS and his deep attachment to his bus, in conflict with ....? I don't know what the heck I'm saying, and neither does the bus.

LMAO....it looks like the lyricist just strung together some nonsense so that it fit the tune and sounded pleasant..that's the best i can say...if this didnt have these awsome stars i'd say this drama was going to the dogs what with the combo of the bad styling, bad posters and senseless lyrics

I laughed so hard over your convo that nearly fell off my chair. It's totally random. You guys should do another podcast talking about random stuff and banter like that. Hehe, totally crack me up.
