Character stills from Flames of Ambition
by javabeans
Yoo Seung-ho has certainly grown up — or at least his image has — for his latest role. He plays husband to Seo Woo in the upcoming MBC weekend drama Flames of Ambition, which used to be called A Woman Only Loves Once In Her Life. In a nutshell, the drama explores the themes of greed, power, and ambition in one family, though we could have figured from the title.
You can’t talk about the pairing of the young couple without taking note of the ages (and age gap) of the stars; Yoo Seung-ho just turned 17, still a minor, while Seo Woo, despite her young face, is 25. Seo Woo plays an actress who has simultaneously the most anti-fans and the most die-hard fans, who’s on the fast track to success. Yoo plays the son to Jo Min-ki and is described as a warm, good-hearted guy.
But the main star of the show is Shin Eun-kyung (love her!), last seen in White Lie, who plays an ambitious woman who’s capable of doing “whatever it takes” to get what she wants. Described as a chameleon, the character can run both hot and cold depending on what she wants at the moment, making her a force to be reckoned with. I don’t doubt she can pull it off; already she looks like a different person in the stills below — I didn’t even recognize her at first glance as the same actress from Mom’s Dead Upset, Bad Couple, and My Wife Is a Gangster.
Other cast members include Lee Soon-jae, Kim Byung-ki, and Lee Hyo-choon. Flames of Ambition will premiere on October 2.

I read from Dahee that it's English title has been changed to Flames of Desire, which she is grumbly that it sounds like a porno. I think it now sounds like a Catherine Coulter romance novel title. Bring back the ambition, MBC!
Anyways, a teaser trailer for anyone who is curious to see YSH make sexy-eyes at Seo Woo.

I *cannot* wait. Salivating over the acting to come from JMK and SEK.

i am conflicted. from the teaser, even though boy looks undeniably hot, I still see it. A wee sapling.
On the other hand, he is chosen for a reason. As long as we have faith in the scriptwriter. Although I haven't had a chance to check out his work, as a frequent lurker of thundie's prattle... how a bunch of very eloquent and thoughful people there are so devoted to Shin Don. It's amazing to see hehehehe.

Actually, the retitling might be a right
ideadecision(?), since I remember that "ambition" is 야망 (yamang) in Korean, and above title has 욕망 (yokmang)...clearly showing the difference...and doesn't 불꽃 (bul-kkot) translate to something as "fireworks"???

야망, 욕망, 욕심, 야심. All more or less the same sentiment, although you could say 망 is a hope, you craving for something, 심 indicates more of a feeling, something you're already experiencing. Just semantics, as they're all virtually interchangeable, based on context. 불꽃 is fireworks in theory, but flames are flowers of fire, too, you know. Fireworks of Ambition sounds really bad. Flames of Greed, too. I'll take Flames of Desire, although Flames of Ambition sounds a little classier.

Thanks for the info, really need it, since Korean can be so confusing too...
Just to add something, tho...망 is basically "ambition", if read in Sino-Korean context (Chin. character: 望)...
I say it so since there was a sageuk drama entitled "Daemang" (Korean 대망, Hanja 大望), translated in English as "Great Ambition" (w/c starred Lee Yo-won, and others...)

Well, I love Seo Woo and I like Yoo Seung-ho, so in spite of the age gap, and the fact that this story sounds extremely melodramatic, (which I usually hate) I'll check it out.
I've never seen Shin Eun-kyung in anything (or even heard of her, two years of watching kdramas and I'm still a noob) but her character sounds like she'll run the whole show, so I'm looking forward to it.

I still can't believe he's my brother's age.. I have serious trouble wrapping my head around the concept (he looks younger than my brother), which means I'd probably have even more trouble seeing him as a husband to Seo Woo (even if it is a contract marriage).
I'm also not sure what we're supposed to be getting with that first picture. Is he protective? Bored? Upset that his wife is so much older than him? And Seo Woo.. Is she a wilting flower? Or is that a "hands off, bitches, I saw him first" glare? Or even "I can look age-appropriate with him, I swear!"
I do love Shin Eun-kyung, though.. I've only ever seen her in Bad Couple, but she was one of the only reasons I stuck with that show for so long; I really liked her there, so I'm sure she'll do a great job here. But I have to say that I sort of hate her dress.. It's really not flattering at all.
Ah well. This doesn't really sound like my kind of drama, but there's a lot of talent in it, so I hope it turns out well. :)

Omo, I am watching this purely for the return to writing of the one and legendary Jung Ha Yeon, too!
Who knows if and when he'll do another drama after this.
YSH, SW, JMK, and SEK are all playing second fiddle to the script, as far as I am concerned.
Makjang screeching? Yeah, but it's gonna hurt so good because it comes from the pen of Jung Ha Yeon.

WOAH WOAH WOAH ! Yoo Seung Ho...boyswise (I don't know if this word exists) 2010 was a very very good year- No Min Woo, Yoo Ah In, Suh Ji Suk, Joo Won, Song Jong Ki and not very legal Yoo Seung ho. The boy voice is really deep thus he can pass for an older boy and his eyes... and his smile omg. I liked what I saw in the trailer but wait and see- namely for Seo Woo and Yoo Seung Ho.

I can't believe his character is actually supposed to be 21. No offense, he's certainly a good-looking kid, but he looks about 14-15 to me. It's definitely a good thing that Seo Woo, despite her real age, looks like she could still be in her teens.

WOAH WHAT!?!?!!!
At least that was my reaction on seeing the picture and headline. Then I realized it was one of THOSE dramas, and that Seo Woo and Yoo Seung Ho aren't even the stars. WHY can't it be a more interesting story? I adore Seo Woo to no end, and I like the risque-ness of pairing her with a minor Yoo - who I just like, not love, but I can't deny that he's one of the more exciting actors out there. Hence my excitement at their pairing for some awesome unusual drama. Hence my disappointment that it just looks like more of what we've been seeing.
I'll still try it out though. For me Seo Woo is one of those performers that can make anything watchable. And who knows, maybe the story WILL be more interesting than it looks.

Nyeh.
Though, they both look so devastatingly, divinely, beauteous.
The cast is pretty interesting...
- Yoo Seung-ho is a given but his role? A tad iffy about that, to put it politely.
- Seo Woo, I love, there's a very raw, unpolished and indie charm about her. I'll never forget that ice cream ad, never, it's golden.
- Jo Min-ki ''is described as a warm, good-hearted guy''. Meh. I'd have been interested had he been his 'baad, maad, mutha' self.
- Shin Eun-kyung, defo love this actress. Though I've always thought her acting style reminded me of Go Hyun-jung's.
If I do tune in it'll be for the two ladies. But overall, not sold on the premise at all.
Can't wait for Daemul. Wheee...

The writer has an impressive resume no doubt. Like seriously, Count of Myeong-dong makes my top 10 faves list. Now SHIN MUTHA FRIGGING DON, I've wanted to see for yonks, but need to be in a sageuky kind of mood for it.
But then, explain Sandglass and then... Legend. *shrugs*
Even if this is something awesome, given the writer and the cast, I don't know... married couples, 'chaebols who can't keep it in their pants' (credit: girlfriday) and MIL scare tactics? Unless of course there are some campy and black comedy elements thrown in, then we have our arthouse makjang. Too bad Lee Sung-min's in the OTHER MBC weekend show.

The Great Ambition aka. Daemang, with Jang Hyuk, Lee Yo-won and Sohn Ye-jin? Not seen it yet. It's sucky? Aw man!
But that's exactly the point... if sageuk is Song Ji-na's kryptonite, then maybe Jung Ha-yeon's is makjang?

I Love Seo Woo, adored her in Tamra the Island, Yoo Seung-ho is cute, he's too young to be playing a husband :) he was adorable in God of Study playing an age appropriate character.

I'd venture to say that there are probably very few males amongst that large group of jealous "antis" for the lovely and talented Seo Woo. She's an amazing actress and then some. I'm not too familiar with lead actress Shin Eun-kyung (other than seeing her in two movies: 'Ring Virus' and 'Quiz King') but she's absolutely smokin'! Seo Woo was the reason I stopped watching Cinderella sisters at the 3rd episode. I felt uncomfortable every time she smiled. And that happened A LOT in the first few episodes.
