Jang Nara becomes an associate university professor
by javabeans
I find this a bit odd, but: singer-actress Jang Nara (Sky and Sea, My Love Patzzi) has been appointed an associate professor in China, at its Beijing Huajia University. On June 30, she received her letter of appointment from the school’s president (pictured here).
Jang Nara is probably more popular in China than she is in her home country, and has pursued a singing career there as well as acting projects. She’ll be teaching in the acting department, which is understandable since she’s an actress, but I still find this a little puzzling. I understand that she speaks basic Chinese though she isn’t fluent; Huajia University is said to be introducing a “Korean style of education,” which may be helpful to her.
On the other hand, I’m not sure her credentials are robust enough for a(n associate) professorship; she only received her undergraduate diploma this year, in February, after being enrolled for ten years. (This is common with celebrities, who often spread out their university coursework over a number of years; a common criticism is that they are given diplomas mostly to look good, and hardly attend class.)
In any case, Jang will next act in a Chinese medical drama in the fall. She also has another project lined up, the follow-up to Mischievous Princess, called Mischievous Empress(?).

That's strange...and seems more like a publicity stunt for the school, trying to draw more attention to itself. How can a newly finished undergrad with no teaching experience be given the position of associate professor? I would think that such a position would require a Master's degree or at least some kind of teaching certification. "Guest Lecturer" would definitely be more appropriate.

Haha, I completely feel ya on this and I'm not even done with Grad school yet (to toot my own horn though I got picked for a TA slot - yay!)
This reminds me of various speakers awarded by presidents of colleges PHD degrees. Still, I'm pretty skeptical since it's an actual position. I'll assume she's only part-time in order to keep up with acting. What would amount to a "Korean style education"? I'd almost wonder if that will actually make things harder on her, since many would expect her to know said style right away, instead of being allowed for error.

Does associate professor in China mean the same thing as associate professor in the US? At my college, an associate professor is like 1 step below an official tenured professor.

There are United States Universities that award honorary Ph. D.s to some of our actors. I know Morgan Freeman got one for one reason or another, and in the South we're all proud of him for it.
I have my Master's, but that only qualifies me to be an adjunct prof. My husband has his BS, and he's a TA. I don't know if that's helpful.

Yes I think it is more a publicity stunt.
Anyway there are many university in China and this is certainly not among the top ones that I heard. Probably somebody in the school got to know her and then rope her in. Alot of chinese biz place someone high profile on their board to get publicity.
I will just take the news with a pitch of salt.

That is a bitta strange news... how will she lecture if she has no real command of the Chinese language? Or hardly any academic background? Is she putting her acting/singing career on the back-burner to branch out into academics...?
How much are they paying her?

She has said that her backing in school is not the best..lol I believe she spent much of what time she spent at high school in sleeping. That is of course because she spent all her time in learning to sing dance and act and her family supported her so normal school was just something she went to rather than to really study. So she has said her teaching or if you like lectures will be based on what she dose know about, that is the entertainment business, after all next year is her tenth year and she put a lot in during those ten years to share. Those that have had the same post in the past are the likes of Jackie Chan so there is a strong promotional aspect to this, but it works both ways of course. She well be giving her teaching in Korean as while her Chinese has improved a lot over the last year is still not perfect. I understand the lecturers are in regard to Korean entertainment and schooling styles and the like so crosses over on her duties as Korean cultural ambassador . Ow her pay and she is getting paid to do this is I quote 'not enough to pay my tolls' so would only be a token payment.
Bratty Princess 2 as news was released a month ago its working title is Unruly Queen it can also be translated as Bratty or Mischievous. Other than Jang Nara is far as I know no other cast members have been named, as I guess she the big draw card. Though maybe others from the first BP well appear, when she and her father appeared at the big week long tv festive for the Chinese new year, an honour in itself I understand, they did a comdey skit in Chinese and with them where two of the cast members from BP, so I guess they are still in touch. Its to be filmed Oct with a budget of 20 million Yuan and a film in dec was also mentioned, though no details.
Why is she not popular in Korea..will that is debatable, I think due to Bright Girl and songs like Sweet dream and others from her pop singer days she has a certain Iconic standing after all for 2/3 years she was about the biggest thing in Korea. But now..China simple as that. Simply Korean news never reports on Chinese events unless it linked directly to Korea, so no one there knows what she has been up to for the last five years. Out of sight out of mind. Plus I really think there been a nationalist back lash against her for both going to China and doing so well there.
There is a lot of underlining reasons why she went to China, but I think even without them she would have gone there anyway. As I said she was the biggest 'product' around for two three years in Korea, you could not read a newspaper watch Tv or walk down the street and not see her all over the place. Endorsement by the scores, something like 36 in one year alone Top rated songs top rated Tv dramas, a film where she was paid the highest amount ever at the time..she had done about everything she could do..what was she to do next..simply she got too big for Korea and about the only place she could go was down or get out of the country and try something new and challenging.

#27 Jang Nara has been typecasted into the same role after role. You know, her cute image. Eventually people got sick of that. Her popularity dropped late 2003 with the release of her third album failing commercially. Went to China, released her 4th back in Korea, which also flopped and the rest is history.

31# If anyone got sick of her it was the Korean press, who I guess where tired of singing her prasies and decided that attacking her instead sold more. Actually she was just as popular as ever but it was the run of press reports saying she was fading, as well as continued scandal stories like, she had an abortion, to use the worse case one, that helped her decide to go to china, plus the fact the the Korean entertainment industry is a very unpleasant place to work in. I understand there was also an instance where she was 'forced' to sing at a nightclub for sponsor/backers and her father contacted the police as threats where used. Shortly after that the family decided to make the move the China.
I have never agreed with her always playing the same role, though it seems like the above, to be the 'normal' persons belief of her acting picked up from news reports and critics remarks. But each role had its own character, different from the others, I guess if you going to be critical blame her for always acting in romantic comedies, where lets face it the lead girl always going to be cute and spunky. Indeed in Bratty princess she took playing cute to a new level!
Her last Chinese drama "Masked Singer ' was a very mature and dark role, even down to a love scene with her getting her clothing taken off, though she of course shows no more than her famous back..not a freckle to be seen. Still it was her first role where she left her cute image role she been so criticised for in the past.

love her in successful story of a bright girl and bratty princess. will watch bratty princess 2 if ever there will be one. she is one of korea's best actresses, imo. yeah she tends to take on spunky funny characters but she does it so well that i don't get fed up with it.
as for her teaching acting in a chinese uni, well as far as i know experience is the best teacher. she may not have been a good student during her time, she may not have a masteral or doctoral degree, but the school of hard knocks that she went thru for the duration of her acting career is enough educational background that she needs to be able to teach acting, imo.
Fighting, Jang Nara! Reach for the stars, do what your heart desires, and stay strong!

what are the academic qualifications required to be an associate professor or even a lecturer in China? in my country, one must have a master degree to be a lecturer at a university and to be conferred associate professor, at some university, a doctorate and lots of publication.

#33 Look, I'm sure your a huge Chinese Jang Nara fan, but there's really no need to get defensive. She was old news in 2003. Later albums flopped. Stars dim. Making excuses wont help.
She seems to be doing well in China. Good for her. Although if I were you, I'd more worried about how the shady Chinese entertainment industry works. That and the incredibly anti-Korean "fenqings" produced by China's OWN state medias fabricating various news stories about South Korea. In fact, I'm amazed Hallyu is still alive in China, which would make them hypocrites.

i read about this yesterday & ranted on my fb page..but if no one minds i'll toss in my two cents here as well..
personally, i like jang nara as a singer, but i don't think her acting skills are even average..i thought her performance in my love patzzi was awful..let alone stellar enough to be teaching at the university level..i'm also a little bitter that she can get such a prestigious post without even having gone through grad school..wtf?
mind you i wouldn't feel as strongly about this situation if i hadn't worked my ass off for years, making huge sacrifices & pouring out blood, sweat & tears in grad programs to earn my credential & masters..yet i'm unemployed now in this shit economy..don't mean to be bitchy about jang nara's big honor but i'm way bitter..
i know she's famous and all and with that comes entitlement and priveleges elusive to the rest of the common citizenry..but i'm tired of the unfairness..oh well..it's china..

Mainland China has one of the most welcoming environments for foreign entertainment. Unlike a lot of Asian places, mainland has no restrictions on foreign artists/products (Until the past two years, Korea banned mainland dramas from major channels, would only allow foreign artists on two channels; Taiwan also had heavy restrictions on mainland artists and dramas). So it's no wonder she's successful in China.

Yes I am a fan so I would rather believe Jang Nara version than those given out by the Korean press. if you rather believe a press that writes stories like she had an abortion based off a message written on the girls wash-room wall at her university, that is up to you. I Know who I who prefer to believe..
There is a strong backlash against Hallyu in China and Jang Nara has felt it more than any, losing all her endorsements and other work last year due to what she did or didn't say on Strong Heart in Korea {the show put up fake chinese sub to spice up what she said and when things blew up quickly ducked responsibility and left her hanging.} But its pretty clear that it was really all about anti korean and anti Hallyu than anything she may or may not have said as she long been considered the top Hallyu working in China. China has a lot of 'misguided patriot's' the seem to think it their duty to attack anything non Chinese, of course that just a fancy way of saying they are raciest, but I sure they think of themselves as nationalists and patriots. On the flip side she also attacked by the same kind of feeling from Korea for going to China to work and live.
The title of Professor lasts only as long as her lecturers does, it is temporary. Think of it as a courtesy Title like teacher . or that is what i got from running it through a translation site from the Chinese one.
As for her acting skill, My Love Patzzi was done 8/9 year ago so please do not judge her acting from that, though I think personally, though she was pretty raw she gave it 110% in effort and she was very young at the time. I think she has real skill as an actress, she just, because she multi-talented, does not act enough to approve at a rate she could have.

Jang nara is one of the many versatile korean actress who still shines. the fact that inspite of her popularity she still remain grounded and admire her for being able to finish her undergratuate course. she will inspires many working student out there to continue no matter how difficulty it may seems but the will power she had shown to many is admirable and hopeful to many aspiring working students. education is a continuous learning process and for sure jang nara will become a successful professor. goodluck jang nara & looking forward for the sequel of BP and other projects.

she said to be making a second Chinese film to be released Oct next year. A historical one about real Korean Queen that visited china? Seems not much is known about her, so guess that leaves plenty of room to make up what they like to fill the gaps, budget mentioned is 50 million yaun. So if all comes off that well be one Tv series BP2 and two films lined up for her, so I guess she getting what she wanted, that is more acting so she can improve her skills. If Bp2 is even as half as popular is the first one, it well about finally kill off the last hang over from her 'scandal'.

Do any of you know of any great actors or actresses who teaches the art of acting~? well, no...similarly, with teachers...i know of several professors who teach teachers but have never stepped in a classroom to teach themselves...this is because they know their stuff...they dont have to b great teachers to educate teachers...so, the bottom line is that jang nara's ability to educate others is independent from her acting ability~
there r numerous examples where u must b good at the art of something to teach it...but in some cases, u do not have to be...with teaching, acting and also singing...i dont have, although it is beneficial, to have a great vocal to teach someone to sing...
