I am European and I don't understand why (in KDramas and real life) when a Korean celebrity dates someone it is considered a scandal ?
The English word scandal implies (I think) something shameful.
They are both singles so what's the probem ? Why would fans be angry ? Why would that affect their careers ?

I have been watching K-Dramas for about 2 years and I have picked-up a few aspects of the Korean Culture. But this one, I don't get it, I really don't understand the logic. So if someone could explain....?

Note : the celebrity / scandal thing in K-Dramas like Oh My Lady, Celebrity Sweet Heart, Last Scandal doesn't make any sense to me

I really don't think that Rain dating anyone including Jeon would cause a scandal. Rumors are just it.... RUMORS, and won't hold up in a court of law without adequate proof.

Rain and Jeon is young and single, if they feel like dating so be it. But a scandal??, I don't like the terms in which it is announced. BTW I remember an interview that Rain did with TIME magazine. He stated that if he was dating someone he would protect their privacy. He also states that his dream is to get married in his 30's. Well he is approaching that real soon, and with the military enlistment in the coming near future, he has to take time to establish a stable, loving relationship. When Rain comes out to announce his relationship/s, I will be happy for him.

I have a hard time wrapping my head around the whole "OMG! Scandal!" when two celebs are supposedly dating. Maybe it's because of the cultural differences between where I live (USA) and Korea? It just doesn't seem like a big deal to me. If they like each other and are single, then whatever. Be happy and go for it.

Javabeans can more clearly clarify this for everyone, but I'll try to briefly explain it here since so many people seem confused about it in the above comments. Don't assume that Koreans use the English words exactly how they are defined in the dictionary!

Korean use of the word "scandal" is in more line with how Americans use the words "rumor" or "gossip."

Here are several reasons why celebrity dating rumors are a big deal (btw, I can't say it's not so in the U.S. either, can you?)

1. Simple- People love gossiping about others. How much easier if they are about people on t.v. all the time anyway?

2. Marketability of the stars who are single vs. those who are taken (under this category is fans' reactions, such as jealousy, losing interest or stop fantasizing about married stars)

3. Result of a more conservative Korean attitude. Logic: When stars date, there's the assumption that they're sleeping together, especially the longer they remain a couple. But if they don't marry each other and end up breaking up, the female in the relationship may be viewed as "unpure" or "tainted" by some portion of the population.

Well, let's hope she's not preggers and a shot-gun wedding is not in the works...Why else tell the world now?

I understand that in every country people like to know who dates who among celebrities (and even who sleeps with who). Where I live (France) usually people like to know but in fact don't really care that much, I think. That's why the Korean reaction to a "scandal" seams way overboard to me.

Sallynally, I got your points on marketability and "female in a relationship". The first one did cross my mind, but the second one I didn't get it at all. I guess I still have to learn a lot on the conservative Korean attitude.

The dating rumor between Rain and Song Hye Kyo is just that... a rumor. It's never been confirmed by the two (in fact, they both denied it), but it's been speculated on by "bikyo" shippers.

^^LOL. Everyone was specualting it even Koreans who do not really care about them.
It was an open secret in Korea. Ask any Korean and they will say that the two dated as there were many sightings of them together in Korea and abroad. Why wasn't it in the headlines? No one knew.
Maybe they were being protected by the media since there weren't really gossips like these before.

BTW, this rumor was denied by Rain already and he plans to sue the paper. Good!

What constitutes a "scandal" and what is just dating. Because you here other stories about kstars dating, and even knocking each other up, and it's not a big deal (ie The Voice... AKA The Love of My Life). But other stars are rumored to be involved in much more innocuous relationships and it's a career-ending national disaster. I'm just really confused as what the dividing line is.

It's all just so intrusive and unnecessarily salacious. It can never be, "so and so are dating... ah, good for them." Management companies, press and netizens alike have to jump on it, control it and spin it. Ick.
