Song Hye-gyo, an action star?
by javabeans
Song Hye-gyo is currently in China working on her next role in The Grand Master, the martial arts movie directed by renowned Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-wai, and will apparently be displaying some “real action” skills in the film.
The Grand Master stars Tony Leung as Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man, and also features Chang Chen and Zhang Ziyi. Each of the actors has been outfitted with specialized protective gear that has been made especially for this film, to prevent injury while upping the realism of the fight scenes. The guards are made of silicone and fitted to each actor’s body to move with them and, as they are lightweight, remain undetected underneath clothing. As Song Hye-gyo is reportedly using these guards in filming, we can look forward to seeing her in action. (It’ll be an interesting sight, that’s for sure; Song has always been known for her femininity and beauty, so a martial arts action film will be a complete turnaround from her existing image.)
Song has been traveling back and forth between Korea and China since December, and has been diligently practicing her Chinese language and martial arts skills. The Grand Master recently began filming, and is planning for a release in the second half of next year.

Isn't she kind of petite to be in action scenes?

It's not the size that worries me, it's her lack of training.
Even with arm and wrist guards, I doubt SHG will emerge unscathed from the training or filming of a Wing Chun movie, if she is indeed going to portray someone who fights.
Wing Chun is all about straight flurry of punches, with defense involving getting inside the guard of the opponent and hammering away. It requires speed and agility, and I don't ever recall seeing either aspect in SHG's movements in anything she has done, be it Hwang Jin-Yi, Full House, All In... Hotelier...

Yep, will be interesting to see how this pans out. I love WKW and actually haven't been disappointed with SHK's acting 'yet'.
Have definitely only seen her play dependent, vulnerable, childish kind of characters, so seeing her play some lethal ass-kicker is well.. intriguing.
Plus, Mandarin, I don't find it's an easy language to learn and has a distinct accent, will she do it justice?
Still, WKW sought her out himself, so will give this casting decision the benefit of the doubt.
If she does well, she'll be right up there with other WKW femme greats - Faye Wong and Maggie Cheung.

She is very beautiful but a bore to watch onscreen. I hope WKW makes her seem fascinating. He wasn't able to do that with Norah Jones ......Anyway looking forward to this film. Who can resist Tony Leung!!!

@supah,
her voice will probably be dubbed if her mandarin can't cut it.
not a fan of song hye gyo, her acting still leaves much to be desired and i find she doesn't have screen presence. and wong kar wai is hardly known for action films. i am a bit skeptical about this. i hope it doesn't turn out the equivalent of john woo's red cliff - that's a bloody disaster.

Look guys, its a WKW film. That already says its going to be art-house wuxia. Ergo, less realism and more surrealism. Which works in SHK's favor. I am looking forward to it, because I like that SHK is taking challenging projects. I do think her lack of exposure to making a Chinese wuxia drama/movie in the past makes it probably harder for her to feel comfortable with the physical moves. Still, good luck to SHK!
I want to see JH make a movie in China.

There has been news floating around some Chinese major sites these couple of days, saying that SHG officially quit this movie already due to some nationality issue.

Whether she's capable or not, the simple thought of SHK fighting made me laugh. She seems like an elegant, soft person. But fighting? HER!?
I still look forward to it... but..... meheheheheheh....

just the fact that SHK is flexing her muscles (literally and figuratively) is noteworthy enough. kudos to her for at least trying, unlike some actors who are so afraid to venture beyond their comfort zones.

I never take SHK as a serious actress but a cf queen maybe.
The thought of her taking this role is a joke.
There are more capable and prettier actress in china that can surely take this role better.

I heard that Tony Leung and Zhang Zi Yi got injured in this WKW's movie ... and these causes further delays in 'Grand Master'

I'm not worried about her kung fu moves since China/Hong Kong has such well-known martial arts master choreographers. I'm more hoping to see her acting improve. It'll be tough to balance her acting while focusing on her Chinese at the same time. I just hope she can outshine Zhang Ziyi, take the torch away from her and become the new must-have female star in a martial arts film. I'm so tired of seeing ZZ in practically every martial arts film.

I'm not really bothered by her casting, but more so of Tony Leung's take on the Grand Master Ip Man? Even Donnie Yen took 9 months to master the skills of Wing Chun, and he's like a martial arts fanatic? I wonder if Tony Leung's done what's required..hmmm.....
Love him still tho. ^^

I cannot picture girls like SHK and Kim Tae-hee doing action scenes, they can pull off trendy dramas and maybe melodramas, if they stretch it. But action?
Hope she proves me wrong.

lol. to the one who doubted bout tony leung's action skills. i kinda think he can do it, he has done action before, just whether he will be graceful enough, though donnie yen has always been more assertive and hard on his movements and to suddenly tone down X100 is quite difficult...
i agree that wkw films are a bit more artsy. what we know, we might get a grandmaster a la hero, where heroes dip their toes on water and fly while fighting in the air, and all the women will have long flowy hair in the wind. wait. that was zhang yimou.
and furthermore, it's a story about wing chun and set in a japanese / british colonial era.

She's always come across as clumsy to me, what with her somewhat stubby body, but it'll be interesting to see if she can pull off martial arts!
Btw Tony Leung's done lots of action movies, not like, super duper kung fu or anything, but the dude can fight well enough.
Actually I've never seen a non-fighting movie with him in it lol. Not interested.

to be killed by the hands of song hye gyo... if there were ever a way to die an on-screen death, that would be my choice.

Hopefully it's not as cheesy as Shin Min-a in My Mighty Princess. All the wire works are so annoying to watch. It's as if they film the entire movie on wires.
I heard this version of IP Man is more of a drama than an action movie. There probably won't be as many action scenes as in Donnie Yen's version.

Honestly, you can't put any expectations on her role in a WKW movie. It may never be released. (WKW was going to do Lady of Shanghai with Nicole Kidman years ago . . . heh.)
Personally don't like when Song Hye Kyo does the straight fringe. It makes her nose too strong and her face shape lose its oval softness.

it's WKW peeps.
Do u recall Leslie Cheung and gang did ANY solid wuxia of the Great Masters in Ashes of Time?! I can picture SHK doing a Charlie Yeung kinda role there... holding a basket of whatevers, hair on face, crying and standing not even pretty in some scorching sun for months of the shoot.

I can't imagine her action role, look from her body, it's very feminine, there's no muscle at all. Besides, for action movie, eyes gesture is important, but she looks sweet and elegant, she has no fighter or aggressive eyes.
I saw the ads for the movie poster, there's no her name on it. Why? At least, it should respectively show.
