Uhm Tae-woong is Cyrano
by javabeans
Uhm Tae-woong may have had a somewhat flat performance in the historical drama Queen Seon-deok, but he can be positively riveting in contemporary works. Let’s see how he does when he takes on a romantic comedy, as he’s just been cast as the lead in a movie called Cyrano (working title).
The movie is based on the fictional story of Frenchman Cyrano de Bergerac, who has been the subject of several films, plays, and literary works. Depicted with a large nose, Cyrano is sharp-witted but self-conscious of his looks, considering himself too ugly to confess his feelings for the woman he loves. The object of his affections is interested in a handsome young man who lacks the courage (and savvy) to woo her, and Cyrano helps him out by writing poetic love letters which express his own love for her. Moved by the beautiful words, she falls in love with her eloquent suitor, but believes that to be the handsome young man.
This version of Cyrano will be directed by Kim Hyun-seok of Scout and When Romance Meets Destiny. According to Uhm’s management, filming will begin when the rest of casting has been completed, sometime in the first half of the year.
I think Uhm Tae-woong is best in dark roles, but I’m not averse to seeing him take on a comedy. He hasn’t gotten to show too much of his lighter side (although you could say Chaw was humorous, though not a straight comedy), but I remember that there were brief moments of levity in Delightful Girl Chun-hyang when he got to show off his adorably boyish smile.

Was he the bad guy / guy with the expensive necklace in DGCH? He got beefier for QSD... I totally didn't recognize him.

Ooh, interesting! Roxanne is one of my absolute favorite films, so I'm curious to see what Korea does with the tale!

Oooh nice. But hey, Cyrano -the classic- isn't exactly funny. Let's hope this version ends in a very different way. ^^
@Samsooki
Heh. But that's because you have eyes only for Binnie and now for...someone you've been trying to steal from JB? *coughcoughcough*

@sere,
sigh. JB reminds me of a k-drama sageuk Joseon Queen. Everything and everyone is hers, nothing for the working class farmers and toilers like myself. :)
It is no wonder that I've had to resort to becoming dramabeans Hong Gil Dong, to steal from the rich to give to me (the poor).
:D
(Of course, we must be careful what we steal from jb. notice i never once laid eyes on lee jung jae....)

OMG. I loved Cyrano de Bergerac! I saw both a French cinematic film and a Broadway version in my English class last year, and I adored both Cyranos. I'm coming into this with high hopes already...that's always a bad thing. If UTW doesn't perform on the same level as Gerard Depardieu or Kevin Kline, I will be seriously disappointed!

I absolutely adore Cyrano de Bergerac (er, it's more of a tragicomedy than anything else, but I loved the ending anyway). Took me a while to recognise Uhm Tae-woong too (like everyone else said, he's beefed up - while is, of course, a good thing! Always thought he was too skinny in DGCH).
Would be interesting seeing how he pulls off Cyrano (but AW MAN, that means he doesn't get the girl AGAIN...unless they decide to change the ending, which, being Korea, is very possible).

Ooo..Loved Cyrano de Bergerac---definitely one of my favorites! And love UTW! So this is definitely a must watch. It'll be interesting on how they adapt the story into a rom-com (maybe?). And Yay! for a new UTW project!

I thought he was adorable during those brief parody segments in Choon-hyang. I think if he were to do more comedy in his roles he definitely won't disappoint.

Uhm Tae-woong is just lovely. He and JaeHee's father made DGCH watchable for me. I was going to watch some of QSD for him but since I heard he was pretty flat I'm going to pass.

Can't wait for him to be in another romantic comedy! He was amazing in Choon-Hyang! And all the parodies at the end of the episodes had me rolling on the ground from his facial expressions.

i love uhm tae wong as yushin rang...he did is best in queen seondeok...bidam is useles in the stor...hate queen seondeok for choosing bidam in conjugal ties...the story is best on the first part when bidam is not yet around only yushin, deoman, alcheon, mishil and cheonmyeong...

Dont hate Kim Nam Gil's role as Bidam in QSD....as I've read in many articles, Bidam is the secret weapon to secure the success of QSD...and as a proof of this word, MBC's QSD has garnered a 40% and above ratings in Korea. It is also well loved in many countries...this goes also to Bidam-Deokman tandem as well.
I also think that Deokman cant marry Yushin because Yushin already married Sejong's daughter...so it is likely that the writer will pair deokman to bidam..
On the contrary, im also a fan of UTW...and Im glad that he have received more movie projects lately...
