Lee Da-hae takes on a male disguise for Chuno
by javabeans
Lee Da-hae dresses in drag in these latest stills for the upcoming fusion action sageuk Chuno (Pursuing Slaves), although I think the men’s clothes hardly obscure her gender at all. (Of all the recent ladies we’ve seen dressing as men — Lee Yo-won, Moon Geun-young, heck, even Park Shin-hye — I think Lee Da-hae is the least convincing. She’s just too pretty in a very feminine way.)
Lee Da-hae plays Hye-won, a woman who is born a slave and is adopted into a noble family and passed off as an aristocratic young lady. She’s disappointed in love with Jang Hyuk’s character, and in deciding to take her fate into her own hands, she runs away from home. In the process, she has to hide her identity and dresses in men’s clothing, speaking as little as possible and trying to keep as low a profile as she can.
Chuno premieres on KBS on January 6.

LOL not very convincing as a man, but I think that's what she is supposed to be... the character just wanted to escape her honeymoon with a fug guy so she wore man's clothing and ran away.

I too think Da Hae looks too pretty to be a man. Maybe a boy? But not a guy definitely.
But I read off somewhere that her voice will be more baritone than usual? Can't see it right now cos I know her voice is more high-pitched than most actresses. However, I trust the crew must have some basis for saying that she sounds impressive as a man...hmmm..
@ GreenFreak,
The last picture is actually not an official take off the drama. It's a candid photo Da Hae took months ago whilst resting in between takes..

I think LDH could pull off cross-dressing better than these current released pics....if the bangs were somehow changed. The hairstyle/clothes are just way too feminine on her (purplish, tight sash right around the waistline, too?). She looks nice in the pics though, so I'm curious if her acting could make the image work for her character!!!

No matter how you look at it, she looks like a female dressed as a male. She still looks really good.
I think that there have been several dramas now with females as males so I think that they should go the other way and have some males dress as females. I can think of a few that would look really cute in a dress.

while i agree that she's pretty, she's not even making an attempt to even try to look like a man here. she should at least fix her front hair; the whole thing just screams "look at me! i'm a girl! in disguise!". anyway, ive always find her to be the vain type who always needs to look like perfection at all times.

the clothes are very feminine. but i'm only going to judge after i watch Chuno because i'm not sure about LDH's character in the drama.
i think its unfair to compare Park Shin Hye with other crossdressers because her role Go Mi Nyu is a very girly, clumsy girl and not a tomboy. it is impossible for her character in YAB to change overnight just because she has to pretend to be her brother. the scriptwriters and the PD agreed that she should act feminine when Mi Nyu disguises as Mi Nam. however, she was good when she acts as the real Go Mi Nam (boy), looks manly too.

i'm a little bit put off by lee dae hae general expression. she always looks 'pretty' i.e cry prettily, looking sad prettily, you know what i mean...which can be pretty boring. is there any scene in any drama where she looks 'ugly' as the situation called for it? i'm curious. or maybe she's just pretty, no matter what she does. how lucky.

Well, it's not like she's "trying" to be a man for the role.
Her role in the story is a feminine woman, so it's not like she'd know how to be a man...
Although I think the bangs are not exactly HER fault. Blame the stylist for giving her "female" bangs (though in ROI, Iljimae had femmy bangs... heh).

pffft! :)) were they aiming for a pretty boy look? :p
dude, that's still a pretty girl to me.
i mean, i'd dress up as a girl and still pass as a boy if i were standing next to her in that clothes :p
it's a given that she's femininely pretty alright, and there is nothing wrong with that.
in fact, i love that she's beautiful. the only problem is that i can't see the effort put in to make her look like a guy :p (for the acting, i can't judge that. but from the stills, hmm.. still no "manly effort" :p)

I guess the whole point of fusion sageuk is to blend traditional and modern sensibilities, but it's kind of a pet peeve of mine when characters in these kinds of dramas have long, smooth, perfectly blow-dried, modern-looking bangs. Sure, LDH looks gorgeous and everything, but it just seems so incongruous to me, and in a kind of gratuitous, superficial way as opposed to a thematically meaningful way. I'd much rather the "fusion" elements come from dramatic/thematic elements than from hair and makeup. But like I said, personal pet peeve, not a huge deal.

I haven't seen Moon Geun-young dressed as a boy but the other actresses you mentioned were absolutely unconvincing. The way they spoke and the way they moved, everything about them screamed "GIRL!" . Nobody would ever think they were boys. So I don't think we can expect any different from LDH. The industry has set a standard for its female leads: you must be pretty, feminine, thin and cute. If you're not you don't get good roles. You have to be like that even if you are pretending to be a boy because you have to maintain the desirable image. The only one I've seen that was believable enough was YEH in The Coffee Prince but even she was pretty and extremely cute all the time. That's why you can never get a convincing cross dressing character in a drama.

Oh my. You should give The painter of the wind a try. She's awesome in that. I liked YEH in Coffee Prince very much (she had all the male-mannierisms down pat), but as far as "disguising" the voice? Moon Geun-young made an OUTSTANDING job with that. I'm still in awe with her performance.

Lee Da Hae...... I'm looking forward to the day she realizes there's more to being an actress than looking pretty....
could be the production team at fault here, too, but I would be surprised if any actress willing lost the girlifying props (eye makeup, loads of foundation/bbcream, modern (flattering) hairstyles) to convincingly cross-dress.
there's that conflict of realism versus the need to attract/retain fans. too bad. i'm sure the drama will please its core audience regardless. hopefully, this drama will make better use of LDH than last year's weepy eyesore EOE.

@nell123:
"The way they spoke and the way they moved, everything about them screamed “GIRL!” "
I suppose it's because they ARE girls.
They can be a tomboy, but no girl will ever be a "boy". You can't expect a girl who, just because one acts like a boy, to have a boy's deep voice or special attributes that belong to men. If that was the case, they might as well should have gotten boys for the roles, pretending to be girls that are pretending to be boys. There. A PERFECT girl pretending to be a boy.
At the same time, one is forgetting the character's situation.
Moon Geum Young was pretty much a girl in a dress for a while, but had to be a "boy" for certain purposes. It's not like she can say, "Oh! I'm going to be a boy now! I'm a female, but suddenly I'm going to have a male's voice so no one will know! *swaps voice instantly with a male's deep voice*"
Park Shin Hye is VERY feminine *nun?* and she lived like that for a LONG time til her teens. She didn't want to be a boy, but only did it for the sake of her brother. She's probably never even seen a teenage boy (or conversed with one, besides her brother) to even know how to become one.
For Yoon Eun Hye, in the beginning she wasn't really a girl pretending to be a boy. Half yes (for work sake) but she was a true TOMBOY. A person naturally behaving like a boy is different than a person deliberately trying to pretend to be a literal boy. In fact, she even admitted to half-naked ajummas that she was a girl. The only reason she kept up her boy image was for work, but before than, she was just a mere tomboy that took advantage of her boyishness to get work.
Rant over. To put short, they all had different circumstances. Can't mush them together. It's not their fault for looking their gender and it's hard to think of them as girls who are EXACTLY a PERFECT reflection of a living boy. *phew*

It's true that girls can't be expected to become completely authentic boys for a movie/drama role but there is a thing called "credibility". It's really frustrating when you have a story of a girl that pretends to be a boy but never actually looks or acts like one.Yet at the same time almost everybody around her acts as if she is a boy when it's obvious that in real life anyone could see the difference immediately. To me something like that is extremely annoying. It distracts me from the story and from the character. I know I'm supposed to suspend my belief for things like this but I guess I'm not very good at it.
