Kim Hyun-joong cast in remake of Kimi wa petto
by javabeans
I say this without snarkiness (a quality I think is growing far too overrated these days anyway): One would have thought that idol singer Kim Hyun-joong‘s stiff, uncomfortable acting debut in Boys Before Flowers earlier this year would have convinced people to STOP casting him in high-profile projects, but alas ’tis not the case. He has just been cast as the lead in the film adaptation of popular Japanese manhwa-turned-drama Kimi wa petto, or You’re My Pet. The j-dorama aired in 2003 on TBS.
Like Boys Before Flowers, the Japanese original starred the popular idol-actor Matsumoto Jun (opposite Koyuki). The romantic drama unfolds as a woman fashion-magazine editor who is perfect in looks and talents comes to live with a good-looking young man. She and the man, who is first taken in and affectionately called her “pet,” gradually fall in love. The female lead is still currently casting.
The contract has yet to be finalized, according to Kim’s management, but should be made official soon. The film will begin shooting as soon as the casting is complete, and aims for a release date next year.
(I really thought Kim Hyun-joong would go the way of Se7en, as in, he’d realize that he was sorely limited in the acting arena and focus on his music. Coupled with his seemingly indifferent attitude toward acting in the first place — he had to be persuaded to take the BBF role by management who were eager to heighten his name recognition — I figured he’d fade from acting, not be cast as the lead in another high-profile remake. Again, I mean this without sarcasm, but I sincerely hope he hies himself to some intensive acting training if he wants a career in the field.)

no way 'kimi wa petto' SERIOUSLY?!?!
Matsu Jun was really cutesy and over-the-top adorable in this drama.... it was pretty enjoyable but not memorable IMO.
and I totally agree with you Javabeans... I don't really see how KHJ's going to pull off crazy cute for this drama but then again I've only seen him in BOF and not variety shows .... oy.

KHJ is waaaaaay too stiff for this role. he needs to act a cute, open, fun personality. that takes skill, which, sorry to say, he just doesn't have. (in acting.)

Who thought this was a good idea? I mean, really? I literally howled "NO!" when I read this. I might watch at least one episode of this for the train wreck potential that this has, but seriously? This guy?
I really enjoyed the j-drama. MatsuJun may not be the best actor but I liked him in the role.

If they were going for the BOF actor, then they should have chosen Kim Joon. But even then...bleh. There's plenty of other Korean actors who can be bubbly cute on command, so why the need of an idol "actor" ?

I could see Jang Geun Suk in this role and I'm not just saying that because I'm on a You're Beautiful high. He has the acting range to do the job and he has the affinity for weird/off-beat roles.

I don't think he can do it, sorry with a lot of 55501 activities, it's hard for him to study acting
psh!!!!
because I'm all in You're beautiful, Jang Geun Seuk maybe the right choice

Well, here is more proof that the beautiful do rule the world.
On the other hand, even though Kim Hyun-Joong is acting-challenged, he is infinitely beautiful, and I was perfectly happy just looking at him during his many (undeserved) minutes onscreen during BBF.
Hopefully some intense coaching will bring out that charismatic, impish, mischievous, and very intelligent young man that comes out when he is on variety shows and interviews. One hopes...
I am, though, still amazed that he will be leading a drama!

OMG. DNW.
there is NO WAY he would do a good job acting as momo. seriously, i REALLY loved kimi wa petto to bits and i think matsumoto jun did a really good job at it, but lo and behold! they cast kim hyun joong to bastardize the drama. casting directors, if you're going to cast someone as momo, cast someone who can act all bubbly and bratty and whatevs. this is just wrong.

Hoooolayyyy-moley. Okay, "warm", "quirkly", "bubbly", "cutesy", "over-the-top adorable" - these are the adjectives the first 7 commenters used to describe the role.
Does any of these adjectives conjure up in my mind KHJ? Uhm, hell no. I think "perfect", "handsome", "chiseled from Greek marble", "OMG, he's so good-looking", etc.
This is going to be hilarious, guys. I totally would give KHJ a chance were he cast in the remake of ISWAK (as Joe's character), not that he is the best choice, but the cold, aloof role he can probably do okay. Cute and bubbly? Hee, I'm totally on board to watch and maybe snark, and coo over his handsomeness as well, of course.

I agree with #7... as much as I love Hyun-Joong, I am sorely disappointed in his acting, and the casting. I too would appreciate and look forward to Kimi Wa Petto if Jang Geun Seuk were cast. Anyhow, hopefully with the experience of BBF behind him Hyun-Joong will improve greatly.

I agree with most of the comments here...but then again, maybe KHJ could pull it off because of his '4Dness' in real life...maybe he was just miscasted in BOF...
I would prefer LeeHongKi for this role! he can totally pull an cutesy role..hehe
Just being optimistic that's all :D

Kimi wa Petto is my favorite jdrama.
MatsuJun seems a tough act to follow with him jumping all over her when she comes in the door squealing "Sumire-chan"! He did seem like a wonderful pet.
I think Lee Min-ki would have been wonderful.

I can kinda see KHJ acting quirky and off-beat due to We Got Married. Now, if only they'd pair him with hwang-bo.. I'd be in heaven!!! =)
Jun-chan was adorable in the series.. and I actually enjoyed it(except for the ending)... Actually, the whole role is to be as "cute" and "pretty-boy"as possible.. and I think KHJ can pull it off as it doesn't require THAT much acting.. I mean come on if Hong Ki whose acting is questionable can pull it off in YB why not this idol-star who has questionable talent as well!!! ^_^

Oh my god! I can't believe this.
"Kimi wa petto" is my forever top favourite manga. How could they do this?
I love the manga so much that I would surely hate HJ for taking the lead role. (He is not my favourite actor but I've never hated him.)
And he is too tall for the role. Momo gave up his dream of ballet and went for modern dance because of his height. There's no way that HJ would fix in this descripsion.
...why can't they cast Heechul for this role... Please ignore this, it's just a fangirl thing.

seriously kim hyun joong?!?! are you kidding me?! WTF....
i thought his acting was absolutely the WORST in BBF....now they are going to cast him as lead in another drama? what were they thinking?! the only expression khj can do is the "confused blank stare." I don't think he has enough range in order to pull off matsujun's momo role honestly >.< i don't want to sound like a hater but ANYONE acts better than hyun joong...even yunho! (and I thought his acting was pretty bad in heading to the ground). definitely will be skipping this one....

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I wasn't impress w/KHJ in BOF, but I did find him cute and funny on We Got Married. I enjoyed Kimi wa Petto a lot because of how well Matsujun did Momo. But I can't picture KHJ as Momo, but I guess who knows right? And a side note, it feels like after BOF there has been a wave of Japanese manga to Kdrama adaptations.

If anyone has read the manga for Kimi wa Petto, they will probably cringe at the thought of him playing that role. *sigh* I LOVE kdramas to no end, but I CRINGE at the thought of the industry wrecking another manga series after the industry killed BOF.
To Kim Hyung Joong, I loved you in We Got Married, but you need to learn how to ACTUALLY act!
To whoever cast him and the person who is putting this drama together, please don't kill another Japanese manga series! I'm sure I'm not the only who has thought this.

Hmm, I agree w/ everyone here that KHJ has long ways to go in acting. However, I have to disagree w/ you that he is not suited for the “warm”, “quirky”, “bubbly”, “cutesy”, “over-the-top adorable” character. In fact, I would guess that such character is more suited for him than the quiet, aloof character of Yoon Ji-hoo he played in BOF because of his real-life, 4D personality.
Acting in a film gives actors more time to practice their lines and analyze the character. I am willing to give him and this new movie a chance, and then judge after I see the final product.

I wonder who the producer is for the korean version of Kimi wa petto. Not only is his acting not good, i think he already has enough on his plate with SS501. That guy needs to relax! he even got swine flu a few months ago!
well i hope the criticism of his acting from BOF combined with the new opportunity from this drama will improve his acting.

this is going to be a movie right? why is everyone saying it's a drama??? i love HJ but like most everyone here, not really impressed with his acting in BOF. I hope he'll at least be paired up with a good actress so that it won't be a complete disaster if ever. But then again, this is a movie which means a shorter version. So I guess 2 1/2 hours will be bearable just to watch his pretty face lol!

OH SNAP! They're going to ruin another Japanese drama!! Don't mean to bash KHJ, but I'd be damned if the Korean remake of Kimi wa Petto can outshine the original, especially if KHJ remains the lead male character (cringe). I know he's an amateur in the acting field, but DON'T give him the lead male part. I've forgotten how many times I've smirked and laughed at the BOF scenes when KHJ tried to be emotional or romantic. I hope the productions reconsider the casting...PLEASE!!

Is there such a thing a lesson learned? KHJ got a lot of slack
playing Ji Hoo and now they want him to play someone
quirky? He needs to put a LOT of work into playing that
role...I wonder who the older woman going to be?
Hopefully someone who packs a lot of heat and

I missed the word 'film adaptation' when first reading the article, since my head and heart was screaming "NOOooooooo" in fully anguished screams - though I've since recovered. Kinda. I never cared for Matsujun, as an actor, in Hana Yori Dango (the whole drama was kinda blergh to me, lol) but he really captured my heart as Momo in Kimi wa Petto.
Kimi wa Petto is one of the strangest quirkiest dramas I've ever seen, and I can't see it being squeezed down successfully into a film - never mind who's acting in it. The whole gimmick captures the viewers/readers, but what really makes the drama/manhwa *work* is character-development, the slow-moving 'romance', and all the interactions between Momo and his 'owner'. The whole concept that they 'need' each other took time to develop in the drama (which was around 10-11 episodes, if I remember correctly...?), which overall lead to a successful 'relationship'. LOL, so many 'quotes' that I'm using. Their relationship was rather hard to characterize with generic terms ^_^
Anyhow, I cannot see how KHJ can successfully pull this off. KHJ acting cute? adorable? pet-ish? *sighs* They better get an equally-awful lead actress, so I can just bow my head, sigh, and move on ~

i loved khj on we got married but i skipped all his parts on BOF after wincing through the beginning. enough is enough! i mean it's not his fault the writers put him so many scenes but it along with other things ruined BOF for me. just the fact that ji hoo had so much screen time bothered me as it almost felt like he and jandi were the main couple. and this version of rui spent a lot more time on screen then for the taiwanese version and (probably) the j version which i didn't watch. he should be aware that his acting wasn't very good in BOF and he gets credit for it since it was such a hyped up drama :/
