KBS orders extension for Sol Pharmacy
by javabeans
KBS’s Sons of Sol Pharmacy House is currently the top weekend drama (its last episode on the 16th pulled in a 36.3%), and the station has announced a four-episode extension. That means that the comic family drama, which was originally planned for 50 episodes, will end with number 54 instead in October.
I’m totally fine with this development, because the drama still has plenty of time before it hits episode 50 or 54, so it shouldn’t affect the flow. Plus, this just may be the first time I’ve seen nearly thirty episodes of a longish drama and still looked forward to more. (Sol Pharmacy has the pace of a long-running family show in that the developments aren’t necessarily high on melodrama, but the pace is kept peppy with a lot of humor and endearing relationships.)

This drama is so near and dear to my heart. My family and I watch it every Saturday and Sunday, and it's just looooove. This extension is much warranted and welcome. Thanks for making this the start to a great weekend. Happy weekend to all. :)

yay!!! i love this piece of news! this is my first 50+ ep drama, and surprisingly I'm up-to-date. i love the family dynamics. In my opinion, it strikes the right balance of light drama and laugh-out-loud fun. i can't even choose which one is my favorite couple, since they're all well-drawn characters. yay!

I LOVE this drama!!!
I just finished episode 30 (I know, I'm behind! I'm impatiently waiting for the subs on aja aja before I can download.). I absolutely love Lee Pil Mo as Song Dae Poong. His character is so heartbreaking and I've been crying an ocean for him in the last few episodes.

to "news" and anyone else who's interested:
you can watch up to the current episode (38) on mysoju.com
I've just started helping with some subbing on viikii.net
You should check it out it you haven't seen it yet...great site and good way to contribute to subbing. This is my first dive into it, but it's been fun!

A wise choice to extend this show! Unlike the consensus, I actually prefer the extended dramas to the shorter ones. To this day, Pure in Heart (aka Hearts of 19) is still my all time favorite. Lee Pilmo has been in several extended dramas. (As The River Flows, You Are My Destiny, Here Comes Ajumma) He's always worth watching. I don't like the way his character has behaved thus far in this gig, (the man has major issues...) but he, along with the rest of the cast, doing an outstanding job. Keep them coming KBS...

I love this drama. It has such a good mix of humor and angst. My only complaint with the whole story is that I wish they would tone down Mama Song a bit. That woman is on my last nerve. If I was one of these women, interested in one of the sons(as adorkable as they all are) I would take one look at their mother and run very far and very fast! My own mother in law gave lessons to Satan so I do have some experience in this field. Not to say that I think Mama Song is evil but enough with the screaming and the hitting already!

Hopefully more Mi-pung storylines and less Dae-pung / Jin-pung angst. :D
@trixicopper, I agree. Mama Song is grating on me. Especially concerning Jin-pung at the moment. Sorry about your mother in law, haha :D
We could do some more with Eun-ji and Sun-pung too (They feel a little pushed aside at the moment, okay maybe I just like them too much haha)

Thanks for the suggestions...I usually watch dramas on those websites but my current situation doesn't allow me the luxury of watching it as it's uploaded. I'm glad to hear you're subbing and liking it!
@ robbo4
Yeah, I can understand how Song Dae Poong's behavior can be annoying and test someone's patience, however, the last few episodes have revealed a deeper side to his character. His role as the 2nd son (rivalry, neglect, etc.) convincingly explains, in a realistic way, why he behaves the way he does. Lee Pil Mo does an excellent job of showing a range of emotions, everything from arrogance and charm to vulnerable and neglected. Ahhh, I really feel for him...and I'm the youngest of daughters in my family. But, character development has been great on this show...for him and everyone!

So, it's 4 more eps rather than 2? Even better.
This is such an enjoyable show. Last weekend's eps were so sad for Jinpung and Daepung. :(
Out of the many people that are sooo fed up with the boys' mother...I curious to know how many are Korean. I don't necessarily agree with her, but I'm not annoyed, either. And although my own mother isn't really like her, I can still understand Ok Hee's way of thinking. She's the quintessential Korean mom. JB, what say you?

I've kept quiet because it seems everyone is in major agreement about the mom... but I love her! She's not like my own mom, but I have a lot of eemos and komos just like her so I have a lot of affection for that kind of ajumma. Plus, they have shown lots of little flashes of her affection for her boys. (And as the sole female -- before the young ladies enter the picture -- in a house of six males, I can feel for her.)

Thank you!
I feel for her as well. Many people view her as selfish, but I think that's a result of viewing her through a non-Korean cultural filter. I'd be surprised if anyone of Korean descent didn't empathize with her to some degree, in the very least. And the writer has done a good job of delving into her character beyond the superficial.
It reminds me of when people were annoyed with main character of Angry Mom/Mom's Dead Upset. Every female in my family loved the drama precisely because they could empathize with character.

Having two adult sons at home ... I love Mama Song. She's a pip! She lights up my alter ego - the part that wants to mess with everything and knows what is best for everybody!
I love all the characters right from the start. Each is unique - Each gets their time - not easy to do with so many of them!
Can't do a spoiler ... but just wait... omo omo aigoo...
Thanks,

I totally get that the mother loves her family. I can emapthize with her having been the only female in a household with 5 males when my boys were growing up. I have a fairly large LOUD family so its probably not the yelling. Its the hitting that gets me. Maybe it is culturaL.

It might be cultural. Both my aunt and my MIL who have had all boys seem to hit there sons a lot.
Watching this miniseries has really helped me understand my MIL more and empathize why she seems so verbally crass and her overall gruffness (the woman is tired!). She was the sole female in all male household (3 sons, husband and father-in-law and at one point a younger brother-in-law as well). She had to cook and clean for 5-6 men most of her life. It is life of drudgery without any help or a fellow woman to talk.

LOOOOVE this show. LOOOOVE Dea Poong because Lee Pil Mo plays him so well. Seriously, that guy is awesome. The character is a total wack job but Lee has got me rooting for him. Mama Song has been annoying me lately only because I'm not a huge fan of how she's handled the Jinpung situation. It's probably my least favorite Kdrama plot device but I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'll wait until the recaps are out to discuss (hint, hint!!). Seriously love this show and I'm glad for the extension... I just hope they don't use it to draw out the already depressing Jinpung/Deapoong drama. They would be much better served in spending those four episodesfindig a man or a career for Miran, or a backbone for Songpoong, or some testosterone for Mipung.

loving the news...
too bad KBSW seemed sooooo much behind... reading above comments really make me want to watched it online... but with not much time and bad connection i prefer watching them from KBSW and smallfish recap... well two more episodes this weekend... waiting till the time i got home from work to watch Sol brothers...
i'm not Korean so i don't know their customs, but almost all dramas i watched, an ahjumma-type mother hit their children alot, LOL... a good sample is MNIKSS (even Binnie mother who is working, not housewife type, hit him :P)

sorry javabeans, i have to agree with those who find Mama Song a bit too much sometimes.
**spoilers below! alert!**
I realize that she really loves her sons and is trying to do her best by them, and of course she's had it rough being the only woman in the household for so long...but having been raised by someone not too unlike her (and actually several notches more abusive and unpredictable) It's not that funny actually living through it, and I can say that she is acting selfishly. She seems to be one of the major obstacles in her sons' unwed status without even realizing it. Something she's always berating them for. I was floored when she didn't even approve of BokShil!! (DaePoong has a very steep hill to climb to deserve her!)
JinPoong is pushing 40 and she's still trying to control his life?! She's not considering what he really wants in a partner or his happiness, but is more concerned with finding a daughter-in-law that would suit her own needs the best. It's really a low move when she goes to beg Soojin to leave him alone. Though it may be culturally understandable, given that marriage and family relations are such an important part of Korean culture, but it's still taking it a bit far.
But of course this is a tv show, so her character is a bit over-the-top, though really not that unrealistic. I can empathize with her like I do with my own my mom (although in a very complicated way) and her scenes are usually a real hoot!
But I hope this show is not only about the sons growing and learning through their romantic relationships, but also about the mom learning that love can mean letting go and allowing her kids to be their own person.

I was happy to hear of the extension. I am really enjoying this drama and like some of you I found the number of episodes daunting.
As for Mama Song, I can kind of understand her point of view, in a sense she wants to retire. She wants to be sure that this family she has so diligently raised and nurtured does not fall apart. Exercising so much control over potential daughters-in-law seems to her the only way to ensure the protection of this generation and the future of her family.
What I don't think she realizes is that her sons have been looking for women who have similar qualities to her. Qualities that compliment their deficiencies and make them feel complete. At any rate I get what Mama Song is trying to achieve.

Ah, I agree with origummi. It's not that I hate Mama Song, I can truly feel even when she's beating her sons that she is being a little playful. I also understand it's hard to be the only girl in the house. My aunt has only three sons, and she pretty much berates them all the time but in doing so looking out for them.
**spoilers**
Bokshil and Sujin are still not good enough to Mama Song. Maybe she doesn't want Dae-pung to be babied by Bokshil, and maybe she didn't want JinPung to be burdened with Sujins family, but she could have a better way of dealing with it. I don't feel like Mama Song approves of Eunji either. She could be loving to at least one love interest to make me feel she isn't so picky. I don't like the blame of the sons not being married on her, but rather their different attitudes/quirks.

Overall, I like Mama Song. I do. And I do agree with janna-- there is always a playful quality to Mama Song's meddling and yelling. Her constant nagging and temperament are actually pretty funny and understandable, and I can see why so many people like her or atleast see a facet of themselves or someone else they know in her.
--SPOILER--
But going to SooJin was low. That wasn't funny, and it wasn't a sympathetic move. It crossed the line, one that 'culture' doesn't erase. And while its very clear that she's only doing what she believes is the best for JP, her motivations werent entirely unselfish either. She's so busy thinking about what she wants for her son, what she believes is the "right" way to do things, and the conditions that'll satisfy HER that she's forgetting entirely what her son might actually want and what might make HIM happy, not just her. Her son's marriage is atleast partly about her own desires as it is about JP's.

I always love PAPA SONG *why there's no comment about him??? Compare to his wife, he seem to understand his sons better by always giving space to them, e.g. when he talked and gave love advice to seopung! He was so calm! I love him for treating Eunji, Sujin and Boksil nicely! He's funny too..
I partly understand MAMA SONG, why 1) I am not a mom yet, 2) I am not korean! But still, deep inside me, I know she wants the best for his sons! But enterfering his sons love's life is totally out of question. I pitied Sujin! I really do! And Boksil, she's so beautiful..but I love her more in sweet spy! Tough & Beautiful policewoman, I don't even care she's the villain!

I have to revise my opinion of Mama Song, she has gone way too far with Sujin. She should be thrilled that her son has found love instead of trying to get the daughter-in-law that would be most easily controlled. I am so anrgy with her and most of you will be after watching episode 36.

omg, this makes me so happy. I just end up watching Sol Pharmacy when I go home, and I beg my mom to hold onto the tape so I can uh watch it on my own. Although I agree Mama Song is annoying, she is sort of a classic K-dorama archetype. And the poor woman has four sons on her hands, well okay, 3 she needs to marry off. I dunno, she's crazy, but she's such a Korean ajumma, well. She actually is sort of a female version of my dad. So as much as she drives me crazy, I deffo get her.

This is a great drama. I am waiting for the next episode. It has taken JP so long to find someone that he could give his heart to, and unexpectedly, it was Sujim who is related by marriage to his first love. You can see the depth of his character and the love he has just waiting to be ex;pressed. The unexpected twist in this drama was about Bokshil. What a shock!!! I should have seen that one coming. I was feeling extremely frustrated with her lack of courage in dealing with SP abuse, neglect, and taking advantage of her good nature. Like the song says, doesn't it always seem to go that you don't know what you have lost till its gone. He needs this paradigm shift in order to see Bokshil as she really is. If he would have taken the time, she might have opened up to him and confided about her family. DP is totally cute. I love how he has taken Hana into his heart, and now you can see that he is caring for Hana's mother. All in all, I think the actors are perfect for their parts and do a wonderful job of speaking to our hearts about love.

lol this is old for me to be adding to this but i have to speak on the mama song thing...i love her. i know a lot of people have expressed frustration about her meddling with her son's lives but i think she's so in the habit of doing that, that leaving them alone is hard.
her meddling is a sign of love, i think. she wants her sons to have the perfect girls, because she believes her boys are perfect, no matter how much she scolds them. she'll eventually realize that she can't find anyone that fits her specifications for every son but she's still someone i love :D it might just be the indian in me though haha...
