Bonding through music in Sky and Sea
by javabeans
Sky and Sea [하늘과 바다] is the new music-themed film for Jang Nara, wherein she plays a violinist who befriends other young musicians. On the 17th, reporters were invited down to the filming location at a university campus in Ansung, Kyeonggi province.
The cast also features singer Hyun Juni playing a rock-band vocalist, which isn’t too much of a stretch for the actress (of Beethoven Virus) who is also singer of the band Bella Mafia (listen below).

The name of the film “Sky and Sea” takes on double meaning: the literal setting by the sea, and the two main characters’ names — Jang’s character is named “Haneul” (sky); Juni’s character is “Bada” (sea).
Violinist Haneul has lost both parents in a car accident and lives alone, and meets rocker chick Bada; they bond over their mutual love of music. Also featured is Yoo Ah-in, whom I love for being so adorable and yet surprisingly fierce in his acting. (For instance, he uses the baby face to his full advantage in Antique Bakery, but was rather intense in Strongest Chil Woo, where I recall thinking toward the latter half that he was only actor left who was, well, acting.)
With those three at its focus, the movie depicts young twentysomethings who turn to music to heal emotional scars. As both Juni and Jang Nara are singer-actresses, they’ll both be contributing to the OST. The movie is looking at a summer release.

I just can't watch actors pretend to play musical instruments while they have no idea what they're doing. It looks extremely fake. I rather see actors act and real musicans play music.

When I read that Jang Nara had gone over the china to film A few CV's and endorsement work I thought they had finished making this, guess they had a break in production or something to allow her to fly back there. She so in demand in china it really hard to her to find time to do anything in Korea, other than fleeting visits. I guess they just filming around what time she can free up?
I must say that she looks younger than her co star Hyun Juny to me..lol..or it maybe she trying harder to look young playing a 23 year old, but I can not see it any great stretch on her part as she always be known to look younger than she is.

@Snikki,
Normally, I read all the threads on dramabeans and all of the comments, except for the recaps of dramas I've not seen (so I don't get tainted). So when JB first put up this thread, of course I was eager to read it, but I didn't want to post a comment just because I like Jang Nara. I want to post when I have something to say.
These days, I sort of feel that I am swimming upstream against the tide of opinion that can flow against Jang Nara. But that's okay. I don't mind if I am the only one who feels a certain way. In that way, I guess I feel a little bit like Yang Song-ee and that's just fine by me. LOL. :)
I guess I don't know what to say other than I like her a lot, mostly because I think I can see her heart when she plays a character, and I think her heart is good. And beyond her character, I also think that I can feel her heart when she sings. So, yes, she may not look like a typical Korean beauty, and she may not act like the ideal Korean woman, but even when she acts out and people think she is annoying, I still think she is beautiful.
But I don't know anything about this Sea and Sky film project, so, we shall see if this movie will change my opinion of her. Maybe I'll hate it and my Jang Nara fandom will be down-graded. We'll see. Films are different from drama series though, so I have no idea what to expect out of her.

@ Samssoki
You are not alone. I have a soft spot for Jang Nara - for probably the 'heart' thing you talked about. Her Success Story of a Bright Girl and My Love Patzzi are good though not great. Both are cute and enjoyable. I have never heard her sing though. Wish her the best with this new film.

jang nara still looks as cute as 7 years before. and 7 years before was like 7 years younger than her real age. and especially in those pics, she looks like a very cute girl performing infront of her parents.

not to turn this into a I love Nara thread but really for those that have not heard her sing you really missing something special. Her voice just touches your 'heart' so moving and emotive.
Frankly I feel she archived near Icon status in Korea, and though people say her popularity has slipped there, at lest everyone knows who she is, even though she barley spent more than three months there in the last 5 years. Many forget she been active for close on ten year.
But even if her popularity has dropped in Korea, it been steadily growing outside of it, all through Asia and of course specially in china, where if she wished it she could stay and never be out of work, but for 'homesickness' .

Jang Nara… I came to appreciate the actress in Mischievous Princess it was a China/Taiwan comedy series which was aired sometime in 2005 though I’ve seen her first in My Love Patzzi and The Wedding still I prefer MP because it’s a good show and a good break to the heavily/dramatic kdramas (lol) the story is simple not so much intrigue considering that its about palace and dynasty. Watching Jang Nara with her dual role which by the way reminds me of Yoon Eun Hye in Coffee Prince is very funny and a lot of times I fine my self griming because she’s simply so cute in those scene. She even has her share of fighting action….yea I just watched it in 2008 but the feeling is not easily forgotten….just one word “she’s refreshing” and to watch her again this time? Wow she never gets old and being a singer it’s not a question coz she’s able to sing the theme song of MP which is Cantonese or mandarin not sure sorry… and she did it great though its not her native tongue.

@17, Epyc,
If you want a nice Jang Nara song, you might want to do a search on youtube for a MV called "It's Alright." It's a single song released for the OST of the Korean drama, "Queen of Ahyeon." The MV is cute, and the song is really good.

I really like music stuff, so i might be watching this!
I never really stopped to look at Yoo Ah In before. Even when I saw that he and Goo Hye Sun were easily the best actors in "Strongest Chil Woo" But he looks very cute in those pictures above :). How old is he?? 20something? I think that hair style suits him. Now I just got another reason to watch it.

There is a youtube post from arirang tv ie with english subs that says Jang Nara has been in training to play the violin for two months and plays it in all her scenes, though her trainer did say that because Nara could produce sounds the trainer never heard of before , Nara must be a true genius ....it was of course a joke.
