Story of a Man to follow the Boys on KBS
by javabeans
News has been sparse on KBS’s new drama Story of a Man [남자이야기], which will be the next vehicle for On Air‘s Park Yong-ha and La Dolce Vita‘s Park Shi-yeon.
The plot sounds rather more like a thriller film than a drama, centering around a rich prodigal son who finds himself taken in by a scam that bankrupts his father’s company. He vows revenge and transforms into a cold and hardened mergers & acquisitions specialist. Park Shi-yeon plays the girlfriend who takes a job at a hostess bar to help him repay his debts.
In this case, though, the production team is stirring more interest than the leads, particularly in its scriptwriter Song Ji-nah, who is penning her follow-up to MBC’s blockbuster series Legend but who is probably best known for the seminal ’90s drama Sandglass. Directing is Yoon Sung-shik of Dae Jo Young.
The drama is set for a March start, following the just-premiered Boys Before Flowers on Mondays and Tuesdays.

I have mixed feelings toward Park Yong Ha.
On one hand, appearance and voice (singing) alike, he's not the best but he's not bad either. His (post On Air period) photo stills are attractive. Some of his songs are quite stylish, tho he probably wants someone to help out with his english pronounciation (and to be fair, not just him only; some other oriental singers need help too).
On the other hand, sometimes I hope he can "express" his emotions clearer in acting and I derive this from Winter Sonata and On Air. I find that he mostly gives a big (blank) stare when his character is experiencing complicated emotions, and if I were the director, I probably won't accept this expression. As an audience, I can't figure out what that stare's supposed to mean. I hope he fine-tunes his acting skills in due time. Just my opinion.
Not that I dislike you, Park Yong Ha; just think there's room for improvement coz I see you've got potentials. Hope you don't spread yourself out too thin. Fighting!!

Park Shi Yeon is finally the leading lady? i noticed in most dramas she is usually the girl that wants the lead guy but he always ends up with the other girl. in La Dolce Vita i was kinda confused by her acting, i wasn't sure if she was crying or laughing or both.

Either Gossip Girl has fried my brain, or that rich prodigal son is dressed a la Chuck Bass

For the story we can be confident, the writer of this drama is the mastermind of amazing drama like Sandglass and Eye of Dawn. I think we can tell this will be a "serious drama".
Park Si-yeon has generally great chemistry with "effeminate" actors (just a little ^^) like Lee Dong-wook, hope it will be the same with Park Yong-ha.
And yes, it seems she is the lead as an actress for the first time in a drama, 2008 was a productive and very rewarding year for her, like Park Yong-ha too.
I hope they will definitely agree to join the drama (we don't know for sure, cast can be changed all the time).
But I will watch it for sure.

Park Shi-yeon has an expressionless face. She has too much plastic in it and I don't find her attractive so I'll probably won't watch this drama

"The plot sounds rather more like a thriller film than a drama, centering around a rich prodigal son who finds himself taken in by a scam that bankrupts his father’s company."
This sounds like a great, great idea for a drama. Song Ji Na will get to explore how debt and money laundering destroys people's lives. These are perfect themes in today's climate. And Song Ji Na prefers to explore themes rather than merely using it as a backdrop for the romance.
"For the story we can be confident, the writer of this drama is the mastermind of amazing drama like Sandglass and Eye of Dawn. I think we can tell this will be a “serious drama”."
Yup, that's the hope. This could be the Resurrection of 2009. Also, because it's on KBS, there should be much less station pressure to make it more conventional.
"On the other hand, sometimes I hope he can “express” his emotions clearer in acting and I derive this from Winter Sonata and On Air."
I actually think Park Yong Ha was born to play edgy, tough guy roles, and at least to me, he's developed movie star charisma over the years. He did a 30-minute short film playing a cop on the edge with his friend Song Seung Heon and Lee Yeon Hee, and he was really, really good.

belleza, i'm glad you saw a movie in which Park Yong Ha acted well. i also had a problem with his acting in On Air. maybe that drama wasn't his cup of tea but he didn't seem invested in his character. hopefully with a more intense storyline, his skills as an actor will shine through, not just in 30 minutes, but for a whole series.

To belleza: I'd love to see this side of PYH too: can you advise on the name of that 30-min film and where I possibly could catch it on the internet please? Many thanks!

When Park Yong Ha gets to channel his inner Serpico, he can be one sexy beast! He doesn't have a strong range of facial expressions, but he has a developed acting/'performance voice. When he gets to play tough as in this short film, he brings that out too. He's not particularly athletic and he doesn't have a hulking presence, but he's able to use his body language to convey a jumpy, impatient volatility, like he's itching to bring out the baseball bat. Truly "strike first ask questions later."

I thought PYH was great in On Air. He was the main reason I enjoyed ON Air so much. It made me want to check out his other dramas ...Loving You which was not great but even then he had a lot of intensity. I just can't bring myself to sit thru Winter Sonata so I haven't seen that one. I don't care much for his singing but there's no question he has screen charisma and I will keep an eye out for this drama. I don't care too much for PSY...she has a very hard face. I wish they had picked KIm Hanuel. She looked so good with PYH in On Air.

this looks interesting, and I admire PSY's choice of roles lately, at least she's improving already as from what I saw in her performance in La Dolce Vita, I think she would like to prove to everyone that she's not just a pretty face, looks like it's getting there ^ ^
