Go Hyun-jung in Vogue
by javabeans
The actress and former Miss Korea finalist Go Hyun-jung (Sandglass, HIT, and the upcoming Queen Seon-deok) is taking to the pages of a fashion magazine for the first time since her debut nearly twenty years ago.
Her spread in the newest issue of Vogue takes on the theme of “Agnes of God’s conflict between the saint and the heart” (uh, whatever that means?) and was shot over two days. At the shoot, she said of the experience, “As my first fashion spread, I was up for shooting as a medieval nun, a queen, a doll, an engraving in stone, it didn’t matter.”
Go also talked about events in her life she hasn’t discussed before, from her debut to her failed marriage. In regards to her difficulties, she spoke with an ironic laugh, “If I’d had a previous life, I must have been a Celtic warrior who’d prepared in all sorts of ways to go out and battle, but got bitten by a dog and died before even going out to fight.”
Go’s turbulent marriage is well-known; she married a chaebol (business tycoon), but his family didn’t approve of her as a mere actress and forced her to retire. After a nasty divorce, she lost custody of her children to her powerful in-laws. She recounted an incident six years ago after news of her divorce broke and she found herself surrounded by reporters in front of her house, and could only laugh at the ridiculous situation.
Of her ex-husband, Go said, “I’m sorry I couldn’t give him more love and I am truly wishing him the best.”

I haven't seen her in a drama before, although I've been meaning to watch What's Up Fox. Must get on it, I really like the attitude that comes off from these pictures. Hot. <3 God, it must be hard to lose your children because your in-laws are that powerful. I'm really glad she's still acting, and not another celebrity to add to last year's list.

I seriously love this woman here.. Her awesome acting aside, i love how real a woman she is.. She indeed went thru alot in her life but managed to keep a frank and simple mentality.. She always seems to be very true and honest to her feelings and thats wat makes her attractive..

She's a chameleon and a good actress. She was funny in What's Up Fox and a tough but hurt cop in H.I.T.

i don't feel sympathy for her...she's no different...she's undergone so much plastic surgery to be miss Korea and then married a rich chaebol and got a divorce, what's so sad about that? It takes two to fight and divorce. I don't know if she's a good person or not but seems to me she tried really hard to fool reality and that life turned stale

you really come off as a bitch, you know that? I guess it does "take two to fight and divorce" when that involve oppressive, manipulative, elitist in-laws using their power of influence and bribery to make sure a mother can't see her kids. Just stfu next time...

Mindy, any kind of divorce is going to be hard. It's a bit harsh to say that she's tried really hard to fool reality when we don't even know what her life is really like and who she is.

It was especially controversial because it involved the Samsung family. Go Hyung Jr just finished Sandglass when she was linked with her ex-husband. It's not unusual for actresses to have to suspend their career once marrying into powerful families. And she was marrying into THE Chaebol of Korea.
She looks fabulous in those pictures. It also looks like she's slimmed down a bit too. I wonder how many of her mannerisms will come through her performance. The way she pauses and kinda zones out before replying. The way she seems to smile with her front teeth.

It definitely takes 2 to tango for a marriage AND a divorce. And I feel terrible for her because at what price did she have to pay that she lost complete custody of her kids and can not even acknowledge them publicly.
Literally, acting is her life now, nothing much in between. If she was to remarry, if she can considering what she agreed to in the divorce settlement.
Although it wasn't revealed to the public, by all accounts (rumors, etc) she gained a hefty sum for it.

I never thought her marriage life was sad. But i'm glad she divorced her husband. Women should not lose their identity. It's been fought for centuries already. The people that should change are those chaebol or rich people. They should remember that the reason they're rich were because of the Mass people who spends their hard earn money to buy this rich people's business products. Nobody got rich on their own.
Yes, too bad on the kids. But for sure when they get off age, they will still seek for their Mom. A Mom is a Mom and nobody can take it.
I like the way she can still laugh even through her hardship. Who cares if she got plastic surgery, eventually all women will think about it eventhough most might not undergo with it.

it doesn't always take 2 to divorce. to sign the papers, yeah, obviously. but that doesn't mean both sides necesarily want it. and divorce is hard, no matter what the circumstances are, especially if there are kids in the marriage.

Probably worth mentioning, that Korean marraige leverages custody rights more in favor of the father than what we're accustomed to in the States. It's almost a forgone conclusion that the chaebol would win all custody rights. It seems cruel to take visitation rights . . . but divorce is messy stuff.
In any case, that was about 5 years ago. Since then, she's made a successful comeback and she's among the most well paid actors in the industry. The"Go Hyung Jung" character is an archetype, easily conveying both a Pure/Regal Image and a Spunky/Sassy Image, unafraid of telling off and slapping men. Of course, Queen Seon-Deok would be a turn away from that, but the knowledge of that archetypal image still informs the performance.
Plus she's one of the few 30-something actresses who has consistently gotten cast opposite much younger actors. And I mean, opposite actors that are 8-9 years younger than her. It's as if those 10 years behind the conglomerate never happened! Through her mid-30s, she has sustaining well an identity as A-list lead/romantic lead.

The divorce was really, really ugly stuff. Like Charles and Diana ugly. And as ". . . " pointed out, there were persistent rumors flying around Spring Day, even though it very well may have influenced by Samsung. Who knows?
BTW, Go Hyung Jung is a major spokeswoman for LG. BIG middle finger to Samsung! :D
Off topic: There were some rumors that an early draft of Snow Queen was based on a daughter from a powerful member the Samsung Group, who committed suicide. Of course, if it was true, that got all rewritten later.

I really like Go Hyun-Jung, I thought she was really good in What's up Fox? A kind of effortless acting yet it shines thru and her chemistry with everyone in the drama was unbelivably comfortable.
About her rumour on Spring Day set, no one knows for sure...
I dunno if its a trend or something or a force of reality in Korean society, but I realize all the IT girls of yesterday, all seems to deal with nasty divorces. Its really sad... Shin Eun-kyung(of My Wife is a Gangster fame), the late Choi Jin Shil(RIP) and Go Hyun-Jung... Somewhere in my film-making galaxy mind, I ever thought if to cast them all 3 together in a movie about women power will be awesome...
Regardless, I am glad these ladies all stand up for themselves...

it's funny how some of you people are making assumptions and passing judgments about her character and who she "really" is when you can't possibly know what her life has been like or what she went through. And all these rumors that you people are throwing around are merely that, rumors. The majority of rumors that you hear about celebrities are completely false, probably posted by some netizens who want to make trouble and then spread by some gullible soul who believes everything that's posted on the web.
In any case, I can only judge her on her body of work and she seems to be a solid actress; not brilliant in any case, but a good actress...which is a lot more than can be said for a lot of other actresses in dramas.
And I love the photoshoot.

I love GHJ. The first time I watched her was in Queen Seon Deok. Her good acting really amazes me every time I am watching her in the screen. Because of that I used to watch her former dramas like Foxy Lady and now looking for a HIT dvd, hope to find one.
The news about her divorce really saddened me. But then, I believe there's a greater reason why she has to chose to divorce rather than to live an unhappy life. The lost of her custody to her kids is the most painful thing of being a mum. My only prayer is to win her kids back to her arms.
Mishil is really beautiful. She has beauty, brains and CHARISMA. There's no doubt why she got a lot of awards. She did great in every role she is portraying. The will of heaven is now on her side. She has a lot of recognitions not just in Korea but around the globe. I also believe that she is a good person too. As I read and watched her previous interviews, she is very compassionate and transparent with her feelings. She is now more matured. My prayers are always with KHJ! Hope to meet her personally. :-)

As i was back-reading all the posts here in this forum, I cant help but to react to MINDY's reaction...
For you Mindy, not to offend you or what, but i think it was harsh of you to judge her like that. You personally dont know what really happened to their marriage. Be a little considerate, won't you?...Sometimes, rich & powerful families can make or break you...we just dont know what they did to GHJ...we might never know if they were mean to GHJ...just come think of it.
And to you, Ms Ko Hyeong-Jeung, If miraculously you happened to read this post, please dont mind these people, who insanely judged you by merely believing in hearsay. They are not worth listening to. Always look at the brighter side of life. Remember, "When God closes a door, He opens a window."...Remember also that there are people who loves & cares for you no matter what. ( family & friends who were always around you ), and fans around the world who believes in you...Just do the right thing & everything will fall in the right place and in the right time time. Believe me...=) ...God Bless!

@ Mindy
Seriously, even among close friends you cannot go around judging them without knowing full well what's going on in their life. Therefore, judging someone you haven't met before is completely pointless. Also, you are the most foolish person ever if you believe everything the media says about someone. And even if (through some miracle) some rumors are true, the paparazzi and reporters many times do a lot of things to make the celebrities react in a compromising manner just so they have something to write on the front page. Take Lady Diana for instance. She begged the paparazzi and reporters to leave her alone on the day of her father's funeral but instead they posted the pictures of her crying on the front page of the newspaper. Overall, your post only proves that: you have a terribly childish atittude, no tact, no common sense and so on and so forth.
@ the other fans and (probably, hopefully) Go Hyun Jung
GHJ became one of my favorite actresses through her role in Queen Seondeok, Lady Mishil, since this was the first series I've seen her act in. I must say, at first, I did not really believe it would be something this impressive. Her role is astonishing, captivating, fascinating. I cannot help but praise her acting skills. I fell in love with her character because even though she was portrayed as a villain, she had many qualities and a unique personality and mentality. It simply made her stand out the most in my opinion.
The Queen Seondeok series only urged me to watch more of her productions. I truly believe she is amazing.
I am sorry to hear of her real life being this tragic but let's face it. Most celebrities live unfulfilled lives in the marriage area. Even the non-famous people go through harsh times. Yesterday, my favorite singer from my country committed suicide despite her having a beautiful family with her second husband. The doctor only now revealed that she was in a deep depression ever since she divorced her first husband and it seems that now, after finally becoming a mother (which is something she wanted with all her heart) she simply couldn't take it anymore. That's why I admire GHJ. I hope that she can overcome all these hardships and live her life to the fullest. As for the unpleasant rumors, of course, we do not like them but then again, it's none of our business.
Best of regards, Ms. Go Hyun Jung :)

I have an aching question regarding a line I read in the article: ''she married a chaebol (business tycoon), but his family didn’t approve of her as a mere actress and forced her to retire''
How can the family force her to retire?Didn't she have a word to say?
Even if she was not as rich as them, when a woman gets married, she is supposed to be treated as an equal in the family, how can somebody impose on her to retire?
Aren't acresses in Korea respected? What is the position of a woman compared to a man in Korea? What I mean is, is she supposed to do as she is told?

Wow, I'm wondering how familiar you are with Korean society. Chaebols are hugely powerful business dynasties/families, more powerful in Korea than their counterparts are in the West. In many ways, the power they wield is much more comparable to that exercised by aristocracies of yore. Then, while acting as a profession has been considered low class in both Western and Korean societies, it's only in the latter half of the 20th-century that acting as a profession cast aside its low-class status. So, while an actress like GHJ may enjoy great celebrity and a certain degree of financial success, those things are nothing in the eyes of chaebol who need their heirs and heirs' close relations to be first and foremost the chaebol. Unfortunately, being an actress does mean being a ready target of public scrutiny, which the chaebol likely do not welcome. And being married into such a family means that you do what the family wants, unless you have an equally powerful family backing you up (although then you're probably acting in the interests of your family voluntarily or are beholden/subject to those interests). So, an actress marrying into such a family may bring glamour that may even be unwanted.
And, no, women are not considered equal to men in Korea. That attitude has been changing, but overall it's got quite a ways to go.
That said, this phenomenon is not limited to Korea. Even in the US, it very much happens. Women give up careers, convert religions, and do lots of other things when marrying into wealthy families that do not entirely approve of the daughters-in-law who aren't of their ilk. I know of one Korean woman who was told to convert to orthodox Judaism (as in the particularly conservative patriarchal branch of Judaism in which women's lot is not much unlike Joseon women's lot) in order to marry the billionaire son. She did.
