Spotlight on MBC’s Spotlight
by javabeans
Taking up the time slot previously occupied by Who Are You?, MBC’s next big series is gearing up for its broadcast: Spotlight, starring Sohn Yejin in her return to television (she was last seen on TV in 2006’s Alone in Love, after which she acted in three movies: Open City, Nak-rang Club, and My Wife Got Married). The cast was at the press conference on May 8 to talk about the upcoming drama.
Directed by Kim Do Hoon and written by Lee Ki Won, the new Wednesday-Thursday drama centers around the world of television news, with each of the four leads playing news reporters at one broadcast station. Sohn Yejin is a newb reporter who’s just joined the station after beating out fierce competition, while male lead Ji Jin Hee plays a local news reporter already at the station (he’s sure got the standard news-anchor helmet hair!). Rounding out the cast are Jin Gu as a junior reporter who’d gone to university with Sohn’s character, and her rival Jo Yoon Hee, who’s moved from the politics department; their eyes are fixed on an anchor spot as the ultimate goal.
I think the series may get initial On Air comparisons merely by virtue of revolving around television, but I don’t think it’ll share too many similarities (at least, I hope not). Actually, from the description, it really sounds more like a reworking of All About Eve — but can they improve on a kdrama classic? (And is it weird calling something classic when it’s just eight years old?) The series premieres its first episode on May 14.

Sohn Yejin looks so NOT like a TV reporter... well, at least not like any reporter I've see on MBC or KBS news. Too pretty..... ;-)

you're right javabeans...it really seems that it's a rework of my all-time favorite classic "All About Eve". We'll just have to wait and see if it can surpass or equal the chemistry of Xiang Zhe (JDG) and Sun Mi (CR) and even that of Young Mi, the villain.
Agree with you Gaijin....Sohn Yejin is way too pretty to be a TV reporter...but maybe then, she'll attack the role in different way and prove that she's credible .

The plot summary does sound very similar to 'All About Eve' which I thought was a great drama. Don't know how different this would be; just hope that it wouldn't be a rehash or else that would be so ho-hum. But we'll see once the drama starts airing.

Wow. Google already logged this entry on.
There's high expectations for this drama as this is writer Lee Ki Yon's follow up project to The White Tower. (Also, PD Kim Do Hoon was one of the assistant producers for Rebirth/Next.) At least the promotion suggests that they're going to do "ripped from the headlines" storylines, keying off various ethical and commercial issues related to broadcast journalism. I would be surprised (and disappointed) if it turns into All About Eve 2. Well, unless, JDG makes a cameo appearance . . .

oh..oh...speaking of "All About Eve"... I wonder if they will recreate my favorite scene from that classic KDrama.... you know, where the psyco TV reporter wears "sunglasses" at night while in London. lol.... That scene cracks me up every time.... :-)
Chae Rim wasn't overly pretty in her "All About Eve" role, but she was a lot younger then. This drama, while about TV reporters, seems to focus on the mature "hot shot" talent they bring in to shake up an existing station. Oh the tension, you can cut it with a knife....lol..... ;-)

Were Sohn Yejin and Ji Jin Hee in a series together previously? Miss Kim makes a million, or something along those lines? or am I thinking of totally different people?

I'm not super interested in this type of story (behind the entertainment scene and so on) it's a little too overly dramatic for me.....but I'll give anything a try especially since Who Are You is now over :(

This is the writer of White Tower. It will be nothing like On Air or All About Eve. I doubt it will have the same edge as White Tower, but the chances of turning into a sappy trendy drama with a few bits of silly jargon thrown in are close to nil.

Yeah, I have to agree with X on this. The promotion for Spotlight has been emphasizing its realism, even loosely basing some of the main characters on real journalists. One of the article, in contrasting White Tower's intensity, mentioned that Spotlight may be more of a "black comedy." (Would be rather awesome if uhhh Son Yeh Jin did a parody of Han Ji Min's parody of Mary Hart. Oh wait, HJM isn't doing a parody . . . )
But, yeah, JJH + SYJ would be very easy on the eyes! :D

If memory serves me right, Son Ye-jin's character in Spotlight is based on a real life MBC News Reporter, which I forgot the name of...anyway I'm anticipating this drama, even if I remember the drama All About Eve, that also came into my mind when news of this drama first came out

I would mind. ㅋㅋ Trendy dramas are trendy dramas, and AAE happens to be one of the very few tolerable ones. For the "pathetically conventional trendy drama masked as pseudo meta-drama with insight about the industry!" department, On Air was more than enough.

Not a fan of All About Eve but loved the bad girl Young Mi. She made that series and I have to say I was kind of rooting for her. Sun Mi's conventional good girl character was downright nauseating. There were two parts I loved and made me laugh the hardest . T he scene where Young Mi wears sunglasses at night and smokes a cigarette and the one where she tells her camera guy boyfriend to do her a favor and just die. It was over the top but you could tell the actress enjoyed it and so did I.
If its written by the White Tower writer I'm watching this. That was one of the best kdrama I ever saw. My top 5 of all time.

NOw i can finally post a comment. I dont want to say anything before i see Spotlight. After seeing the first 6 episodes, i can say that this kdrama has very little or no similarities to All About Eve. It is more about the reporters, investigative journalism. There's only a touch of rivalry but i'm liking that. I love Son Yejin's character as well as Ji Jinhee. i think they have chemistry.
Love it love it. I thank the subbers for subbing them quite fast. Bless them =)
