SBS’s Iljimae preview trailer

With On Air winding to a close, SBS is prepping its next Wednesday-Thursday series to take its place: Iljimae starring Lee Junki as the titular honorable thief and Han Hyo Joo as his love interest.

SBS provided viewers with a first glance at Iljimae with a teaser spot after last week’s On Air broadcast, and has just come out with a second trailer (watch below). I admit the trailer looks flashy — is the traditional sageuk dead? Are all historical dramas now taking on budgets and scales of movie proportions? — but I can’t say I’m too excited. But I’ll still be keeping an eye on it, partly because I like Han Hyo Joo and partly to see how it compares to MBC’s version starring Lee Seung Gi, slated to air later this year.

SBS’s Iljimae is produced by Green Snake Media (Jumong, Lobbyist), with PD Lee Yong Seok (Korea Secret Agency aka Invincible Parachute Agent, and sub-PD on War of Money) and writer Choi Ran, whose credits run toward more educational programming with TV Talks Book and HD History Special. It airs its first episode on May 21

At least the OST should be really interesting... But something looks odd to me. It does look like a high budget movie but the images still look really drama like, without much movie treatment on the very first seconds. And the last place he is is strangely familiar. I don't know what to think about it, but it would be nice if you follow it with recaps so we can get your opinion while watching ^^

Huh. Well, this trailer is certainly better than the other one - the other one was pretty bad, in my humble opinion.

I dunno...The veteran cast here is amazing, but the young cast worries me. I like Lee Jun Ki, but...I'm going to try to keep my expectations low so that I won't be disappointed if it ends up...well, bad. I guess it doesn't help that I dislike most fusion sageuk, either...

Lee Junki is so talented. I loved him in "The king and the clown". This trailer looks awesome. What does Iljimae mean? Is it someone's name?

Dead and buried, I'm afraid.

I've been waiting for this drama since they announced that Lee Jun Ki was going to star in it. The cast may be fresh but they have alot of potential. I hope this drama is as good as Hong Gil Dong.

I love this blog too ^-^

From the trailer, I assume that this will be almost completely an action drama? Meaning less like Hong Gil Dong but more like one of those martial arts movies with a focus on fighting?

I'm not too familiar with the legend of Iljimae ;[

It's so DRAMATIC....lol.

But then again, most trailers are like that....

Woah. The trailer seemed disappointing to me, someone used the word 'vague' to describe the it and i happen to agree with them. Lee Junki seem such a mysterious dark thief...barely see him...aww. Well i try not to be to critical since its just a trailer....hopefully it turns out great like everyone wants. woohooo!!

Isn't Iljimae like Hong Gil Dong but more rogue-ish or something?

Two Iljimae's in the same year....isn't that too much? We already have enough historical dramas as it is.....

Well on the good side, at least the main character is played by two beautiful men.

I hope the series will have some substance in addition to all its flashyness. It looks nice that its a high budget drama but sometimes those can't be really disappointing especially with the excess hype and high expectations it creates.

However, I look forward to seeing Lee Junki and Han Hyo Joo in it. Hopefully it will turn out well!

Well, we'll see how it turns out. I really enjoy watching Lee Junki, so I'll definitely be checking out the first couple episodes.

This is interesting: "writer Choi Ran, whose credits run toward more educational programming..."

On the plus side, for people who appreciate accuracy, logic, and some semblance of realism in their dramas, this could be a good thing. But exciting, addictive? I don't want to jump to any conclusions based on writers' past experience, so I guess...we'll see how it turns out :)

Lee Jun Ki and Park Shi Hoo? How can you not watch it?

Well, maybe Lee Jun Ki's version will be more action packed given that he's a martial art expert. On the other hand, Seong Gi's might be more on drama since he is more a singer and drama actor. But if given the choice between the 2, i would vote for a more action one and less drama for LJK. He tends to overact as seen in his last Kdrama, Time between dog and wolf.

Lee Jung Ki's getting there as an actor, but he and his 2 partners were (badly) miscast for Time Between Dog and Wolf. He demonstrated that same kind of preening, shallow anger in his performance for May 18th, but at least there it was right for his character.

LJK is kinda like the Kiera Knightley of K-drama/K-film. Too much too early and often way of his depths, but he's putting on a good fight, and someday he'll actually fill out into the roles his success has afforded him. And I think he's right to play Iljimae.

Wow...this looks like it has much potential. I appreciate that this trailer didn't reveal too much. Thanks. For such a movie, I think it depends on your mood and your preference in genre...right now I'll agree with beng Says: and take really awesome choreagraphed action and cinematography over possibly excellent yet overdone acting.

I can't help but like the flashy movie-style sageuk. I mean...I'm not a sageuk fans. They make me go to sleep, as it's very very long-winded most of the time, though I do find a few that really make me say "wow"...it's rare though. Maybe I don't have the patience for them to get to the point. I also like drama and comedy stuff...

But I'll be looking forward to this. I liked the background music. I hope it'll keep my interest long enough for me to really enjoy it....Wonder which of the two productions will be the best.

I hope you recap at least the first few episodes so I know if I should take the plunge.
