Happy White Day everyone! (Although I think more of us probably don’t observe the holiday than do.)
In case you’re not familiar with the concept, White Day takes place a month after Valentine’s, on March 14; and since V-Day is when girls gift boys with chocolate, White Day is the reverse when boys return the favor.
(Never to miss out on a manufactured marketing opportunity, apparently there’s also an informal “Black Day” — a month after White Day — when singletons eat jajangmyun, aka that ubiquitous black-bean noodle dish seen in every kdrama in the history of kdramadom. Merely a color-oriented correlation, or a holiday for the embittered? Well, I’ll take any holiday that makes eating jajangmyun one of its requirements.)

I opened your blog - read the title and let out a yell! "It's WHITE DAY!" Not only had I forgotten, but my hubby had as well! He tried to rationalize his forgetfulness by reminding me that Canada doesn't have a White Day! But although I'm Canadian, he's Japanese and we live in Japan which DOES have a White Day! So, that didn't work. He's going to have to be creative over the next few days or BIG TROUBLE! (Better get thinking, honey! LOL!)

I will celebrate Black Day this year, if only to eat jajangmyun. I'm not a big fan of Vday as I still have thorns stuck in my hands from working at a flower shop during that time years ago.

White Day sounds like a really romantic holiday, just like V Day... Too bad we don't celebrate it here in Singapore... =(
Anyhow, Happy White Day Javabeans!

Happy White Day! I remember this day back when I lived in Korea. It made as much sense to me as Peppero Day (November 11) did.
Jajangmyun for those who haven't eaten it is pretty tasty :) I haven't had it since I've been back to Canada though.

I love jajangmyun, so when is Black Day?
Btw, I live in Canada and you can get jajangmyun (the instant version) in most korean groceries. Most shanghai restaurants also have it, but I still prefer the Korean version.

Happy V-day dramabeans !!! Hope you get enough chocolate with "java" to use for a year (jk)
I love jajangmyun too, we are lucky to have a Chinese Korean Restaurant only 30 minute drive away which we visit pretty often.

Happy White Day, everyone! Maybe now someone can help me get rid of the stash of leftover candies in the office. Yay, jajangmyun. Hmm, wonder if it’ll go to my hips like the sweet stuffs.
Anywayz, this really perks my interest. Mixed with a lot apprehension of course. I think it will irritate quite a few people: Charlize Theron is planning on starring and producing a remake of “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance”. I’m on the fence about this. The only reason I’m not so negative about this remake is that it involves an actress with a credible caliber. (I mean many may disagree but I thought she was very good in Monster. Plus, she seems to be one that chooses quirky projects based on interest and does not capitalize on her looks. God ain’t fair, I tell you). Plus, the rumor is that director Park Chan-Wook approached Charlize (who supposedly is a fan of his works) to remake it for the American audience. So maybe this is one that might measure up to the original (though I highly doubt it will).
“Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” was the first Korean movie that I’ve watched. That leads to many more down the road and eventually to K-dramaland. I remember watching it for the first time and was in awed. It was just visually stunning. I hope they won’t botch it. At least Jodie Foster is nowhere near the project. Thank God for age-appropriate casting.

No White Day for me in Poland as well, that sucks. Thankfully we have Women's Day on 8th March :) But I've never tried jajangmyun, they made it look soooo good in Fantasy couple that I'm really dying to go to Korea, sit in one of those little restaurants and beg ahjumma to give me some :)

its pi (3.14) day at school. might as well be white day, for all the pies i've had. everyone brings them in for extra credit..
i've had jajangmyun only once, when i went to a Chinese-Korean restaurant with my friend. i didn't like it very much then. its kind of slimy, or maybe i'm thinking of something else.

Call me old fashioned, but I've always believed that V-Day is for girls (ie moi) to receive chocolates. :p White day is silly.
But either way bring on the jajangmyun~~ :D

Vii,
or you can just make some yourself. If there's an Asian Market around ya, all you need is Asian squash, onions, fatty pork, and roasted black beans sauce.....and noodles.

Happy White Day!! Since I didn't get anything for Valentine's Day (hubby and I are too lazy to give each other anything), I guess I should really hound him re: White Day ("I tell you - it really is a holiday in Korea!! Don't believe me? Check Javabeans' blog!" LOL!)
The instant jjajangmyun you get at the Korean market (I think they do have the sauce available in a can now, which is probably a little better) just isn't the same as the kind you get at a restaurant. The problem is that you can only find it at a Korean-ized Chinese restaurant. I've had the non-Koreanized version before, and it is completely different. When I started getting addicted to Kdramas, I was craving jjajangmyun like a madwoman! I finally tracked it down at a place in Oakland, so now I can get my jjajangmyun fix any time I want. :)
tealeaf, is Park Chan Wook going to direct or be involved with the remake?

Hey hjk, how's it going, woman-of-all-trade? :)
Me not sure, news was of yesterday. He was the one who approached her, so i really hope that he's involved in at least some aspects of the production.
BTW, how's the weather in the Bay Area? I have to be in The City this weekend. Last checked, it's going to rain. Tell me that it's not true, girl.

tealeaf - Well, after several weeks of BEAUTIFUL weather (some days even in the 70's, fooling us into thinking it was summer), it finally rained last night. It was nice again this morning, and then the clouds came in and brought a sudden quick storm of showers this afternoon. Right now, it's mostly overcast, but the clouds are moving fast. The forecast is for more showers tonight and tomorrow with the highs in the mid-50s in the City. :( Sorry! Sunday's supposed to be sunny but windy and 58. (The city's usually a little colder than where I am across the bay - the key is to layer, layer, LAYER!) Hope you'll get to stay for the sun on Sunday (but if it says windy, then the City will be WINDY). Then, it's supposed to warm up again starting Monday. You picked a bad weekend. Are you sure the storm's not following you here? J/K. ;)

Lawl. White Day never happened for me before, so I think I have been spiritually celebrating Black Day all my life. I'm not Korean, but maybe I'll have Jajangmyun on 5/15. I've never had the Korean kind--only the Chinese kind. Personally, I don't like it that much the few times I've had it because all the meat ends up at the bottom, but maybe the Korean kind is better.
I hope you're having a nice White Day! :]

Happy W. Day!!
Koreans have a lot of Holidays on 14th of almost every month :)
Feb14th Girls give presents to boys
March14th Boys give presents to girls (White Day)
April 14th (Black Day) which is the day for singles to go out and stuff their faces with one of my favorite Korean dishes jajangmyun :D
In my case I believe I will be celebrating the black day ^^
I love jajanhmyun although most of my friends I have taken to have Korean food do not like it, they say it doesn't have enough salt (and also that it tastes like nothing)
O.o

Also, can anyone help me with a technical question?
So I've always, always liked the screen captures that javabeans puts up on her episode synopses. Can anyone (or javabeans herself :) ) tell me a good program to use or way to do this?
I would love to incorporate some personal screencaps in my work project coming up. Thanks for any help!

Hi. I've been stalking your blog for some time now(okay maybe a week haha) but it felt like a long time. I enjoy reading your intellectual rants about random thing(mostly related to K-dramas and such) and I love it. I hope to write more but my mind is blank right now my apologies. Happy White Day! I completely forgot. Even though we don't even celebrate it in America or so where I live.
It's also PI day 3.14 hehe my math teacher presented us with pie today hehe
Wow Black day, the creative schemes people come up with, but hey if it involves a requirement for eating good food count me in :D

Hi. I've been reading your K-drama recently, although this is the first time i've commented.
white day is really quite humorous to talk about to people who don't know what it is. We were talking about different holidays celebrated in Japan in my math class and I mentioned white day. Everyone looked at me like i was racist until I explained what it was. They didn't believe it existed until we looked it up. That's when we discovered black day as well. So now its becoming a joke in my class where one of my Caucasian friends is celebrating white day because he's white.

I just ate and enjoyed Jajangmyun for the first time, at a Boston Massachusetts USA Korean restaurant....I was a spectator at the 1988 Olympics but somehow don't recall having this...
now I have to find a place to have it again! (I actually live 75 miles north of New York City in USA, 2 hours by train,) so probably that is my best chance, but I will inquire in my local area as well.
Thanks for the Blog!

Toward the end of reading the comments, I realized that it's Jajangmyun Day! yippee....I don't cook but I have always said that I'll learn how to make jajangmyun. I very much do enjoy the dish though the look itself is more distinctive than the taste. I have to drive across the state border to go to Korean restaurants. Where I live, Japanese steakhouses are more popular.
