Lee Seon Kyun’s dream role
by javabeans
Thirty-two-year-old actor Lee Seon Kyun, whose career has taken a recent dramatic upswing following back-to-back hits in the series White Tower and Coffee Prince Store #1, was recently on SBS’s Midnight TV Entertainment (aired on the 14th). On the show, he discussed his “dream” to play a reckless profligate character.
(The word he used, “han-ryang,” initially referred to old military nobility who had yet to successfully pass the military service exam, but gradually came to carry the negative image of a person who idles away his time and avoids any kind of work, favoring his own amusements. Lee Seon Kyun used the word with a slightly different bent, explaining he doesn’t mean merely someone who worthlessly wastes time, but rather a person who has the freedom to enjoy his life at his leisure, living to the fullest.)
He also spoke of his recent spike in fame, telling the story: “During the holidays when I meet up with relatives, I’m usually asked to sign some autographs for people they know. But this year, they told me to prepare 200 autographs in advance.” Haha. Cute.
I think it’s a good thing when actors build their careers gradually, and hit the height of their fame well into their careers rather than all at once in the beginning. I read an interview with Gong Yoo much to the same effect shortly after Coffee Prince, where he said he was glad he hadn’t received this much popularity at the start of his career, because he would’ve been insufferably arrogant. But now that he’s been acting for a while, he’s more appreciative of his fame. Conversely, I wonder how all those young pretty boys du jour will turn out; god, can you imagine the egos on those kids?
Anyway, fans won’t have to wait too much longer to once again hear his deep, rich-toned voice in action; Lee Seon Kyun’s next project is the crime thriller Our Neighborhood, co-starring Oh Man Seok (currently in King and I) and Ryu Deok Hwan, and will be released on the 29th.
